> Bellefonte, Pa., May 10, 1918. A WORD FROM HOME. There's a fellow needs a letter, Will you write him just a line? It will make him feel much better To receive this friendly sign That we march in love beside him Wheresoever he may roam, Share his life, whate’er betides him, As we think of him at home. He has borne his country’s burden, Sailed away to face the fight; Will you cheer him with this guerdon— You are with him day and night? Just sit down and write a letter, Full of vim, and news, and cheer, It will make him feel much better For your thinking of him here. There are days when he feels badly In his dugout far away, Send him, comrades! freely, gladly, Tidings from the U. S. A. Stand beside him thigh and shoulder, Send your spirit with a might, It will make him fight the bolder Just to read the lines you write. Just sit down and write a letter Full of happiness and mirth, It will make some boy feel better, As he burrows in the earth; Make his dugout one fine mansion, Make his night-watch bright as day Sit right down and send good tidings To the boys who sailed away! —Selected. BUILD A SILO. A Silo is a Good Foundation for Low Cost Milk and Beef. How about that silo you have an- ticipated putting up for the last two or three years? Never has a silo been such a paying proposition as it is at present and never has so few bushels of corn built a silo. With commercial feeds at their present prices it is imperative to try and les- sen the cost of feeding and it is only through a silo and feeding the most concentrated feeds that this can be done. a : Six reasons for building a silo: _ Saves immature corn from frost. . Furnishes succulence. _ Insures maximum feeding value. . Tides over short pastures. . Stores crop in small space. . Saves labor. : Succulence is just as essential to the cow in winter as in summer. The abundant milk flow obtained from June pasture is due to the succulence of the grass; silage provides succu- lent feed during the winter when pas- ture is not available. With silage in the ration dairy cattle can be kept in the condition of health common to an- imals on pasture. Silage is palatable and no other feed will combine so well with dry hay and a little grain to pro- duce economical results. We have on file in the farm bureau office information and catalogues on ten to twelve standard makes of silos and we are in a position to help sup- ply any information needed. We also have comparative prices on several makes of silos and we will be glad to talk it over with anyone at any time. If enough interest is manifested a silo excursion will be run about the middle of June. We will make it a point to visit several makes and types of silos, go over their construction thoroughly, and give each one a chance to make a comparative study of the different types of silos. If you are interested in such a trip or excur- sion kindly let us know. R. H. OLMSTEAD, County Agent. French Prisoners are Inoculated by the Germans. New York, N. Y.—Deliberate inoc- ulation, by the Germans, of French prisoners as one means of furthering the German plan to extinguish the French as a race, is one of the horrors of the Prussian method of waging war which has been charged in the public press. Corroberation of this horror as a fact is now made possible through the information given to this bureau by an American who lived for many years in Germany, and whose infor- mation in turn was obtained from a German civil engineer and electrician, who at the time was doing all kinds of odd jobs for the German govern- ment. “During October and November, 1914,” said this bureau’s informant, “certain business transactions brought me into constant touch with this Ger- man and his Austrian wife. At first they were very reticent about the war, though they had many questions to ask about the United States. It was several times noted that the wife was in tears, and when asked as to the SS UT CODD special cause of her weeping, she would always answer: “¢Oh, those beautiful horses! My heart is broken at the thought of their being killed and left wounded on the field, and no help for them.’ “When reminded of the men who must be killed and wounded, she would reply: : “Yes, it is terrible, but my feeling is for the horses.’ : “When the Belgians and their suf- ferings were mentioned, this lady would only answer with expressions of contempt and disdain, with accu- sations of crime and many monstrous propositions. . “At that period Belgium had not yet become a German province, though her postage bore the words ‘Deutsch- es Reich,’ France was losing her towns, cities and villages daily. Hour- ly telegrams were arriving announc- ing victories. On all sides school children were celebrating and enjoy- ing holidays. Thousands of French soldiers were being sent in. “As tales began to spread about these prisoners, their awful condition, their being only young boys, say from 14 to 16, and old men tottering from age and disease, unfit for any pur- pose, my suspicions became aroused as to what could then be only surmis- ed, and I deliberately set out to ob- tain information of conditions as they really were. “The German I have already refer- red to was subsequently asked if one miglit see these poor creatures and take them some delicacies. The ans- wer brought forth the appalling truth in all its naked horror: | i i i i i {by our surgeons, but they need little end of the French nation.’ land?’ “ ‘You would not be allowed to visit them. They are being taken care of care. They are a miserable lot and we must get them out of the way.’ “ ‘Why,’ I asked in surprise; ‘how ’ “ ‘Inoculation does much, and then there are other ways of getting rid of them. They are now dying by thous- ands and their nation is dying out. We do not want the men, as we shall take France and keep it. The people will be tubercular, and that will be the “For days,” concluded this bureau’s informant, “the cry was ‘Calais to- morrow, tomorrow Calais—then Eng- But the French nation was not wiped out by inoculation and other mysterious means. Calais was not reached. England, the mighty bul- wark of the nations, is still keeping the gates closed against the hordes. “There is nothing these Germans won’t do. They poison not only gas, but wells and children’s sweetmeats. They spike toddling babies on their bayonets and carry them in triumph through a conquered village. They repeatedly assault a wife in the pres- ence of her pinioned husband. They use young girls for the convenience of a regiment. Such girls, insane The Potter-Hoy H’d’w Co.
