The Bellefonte High school club has decided to send two delegates to Camp Nepawhin July 10th to 18th, inclusive, to attend the High school council. Three new members have been add- ed to the Commonweal club on the Branch. This club has also started a bird contest Two classes have been formed, the “Sparrows” and the “Robins,” and the object is to see which side can identify the greatest number of birds and nests within a month’s time. A first-aid class has been started by the State College branch and the members are now under the instruc- tion of Dr. Foster. Everybody is urged to make prepa- ration for the field day at State Col- lege which will be held on Monday, July 16th, rain or shine. One of the events will be a pass-ball relay in which a number of players can con- test. An Appeal! At this time when unusual appeals are coming to all loyal citizens for the support of special work necessi- tated by the war, there is danger of forgetting our customary duties and obligations. Merchants and manu- facturers are warning us of the neces- sity of keeping on with regular busi- ness and of avoiding hysterical econ- omy; and the same advice seems time- ly regarding religious, philanthropic and charitable work. While we are listening to the pite- ous cries of the orphans of Europe, let us not forget the children of Cen- tre county. In responding to the call of the Red Cross society or of the Y. M. C. A. in the military camps, we should not withdraw support from our local churches nor forget the first aid work needed in our own commu- nities. One much needed phase of “first aid” work in Centre county which seems in danger of being neglected at this time is the county Y. W. C. A. Although this has been organized but a year and a half, it has a mem- bership of 300, with clubs or branch- es in eleven different places. No oth- er organization has come into the county which has made so broad an appeal to all of the young women and girls, not only in the towns, but in the scattered rural communities. Never- theless, the work cannot continue un- less its financial support is assured. In order to carry it on, the services of the general secretary must be retain- ed, to continue and to enlarge the work to meet calls which are coming from other parts of the county. Is any work more needed in this time of national crisis than that which contributes to the welfare of the young women and children of our community? Is military preparation more important than the prepared- ness of mind, body and soul which shall make the womanhood of our county equal to their tasks and re- sponsibilities during and following this great war? Will not the patri- otic men and women of this county respond to this call and by their con- tributions make possible the continu- ance of this much needed work? Mrs. G. G. DOND, Chairman of Finance.
