MEMORIAL DAY IN BELLEFONTE.—Ow- ing to its being Saturday and payday for the American Lime and Stone company Memorial day was not as universally observed in Bellefonte this year as usual, especially by the closing of stores. Aside from the postoffice and banks all stores and business places were open except from one to four o’clock in the afternoon, during the memorial exercises. The exercises were under the auspices of Gregg Post No. 95, G. A. R, and as evidence of the ravages of Father Time among the ranks of the old veterans was the fact that only twenty-one old soldiers were present to pay this annual tribute to there dead comrades. The parade which formed in the Diamond was composed of Company L, the Coleville band, Gregg Post and the Undine fire company. At the cemetery the exercises were in charge of commander Samuel B. Miller. Special exercises were held at the graves of ex-Governor Curtinand General James A. Beaver. There were flowers in abundance and not a single soldier's grave went undecorated. From the cemetery the crowd return- to the court house where a very patriotic address was delivered by Rev. Ezra ‘H. Yocum, pastor of the Methodist church. ALTOONA WOMEN GET VERDICT.—In last week’s WATCHMAN a report was given of the trial of the case of Craig Rhoads, and Josephine L. Rhoads, his wife vs. the Pennsylvania Railroad company; Grace R. Kephart vs. the Pennsylvania Rail- road company; and Henry Doerr vs. the Pennsylvania Railroad company, the three cases being the result of an accident at the railroad crossing this side of Milesburg, on July 12th, 1913, when Mr. ‘Doerr drove his automobile against a moving train with the result that the machine was thrown into a cul- vert and the occupants of the car injur- ed. The case was on trial from Tuesday afternoon until Friday afternoon when the case went to the jury. The latter were out until six o’clock Saturday morn- ing when they returned a sealed verdict. Court convened at 8.30 o'clock when the verdict was handed in. The jury gave Mr. and Mrs Rhoads a verdict of $359.— 33, and Miss Kephart $765.10. The court then told the jury that in the case of Henry Doerr inasmuch as he had failed to exercise proper precaution, and the accident was entirely due to his negli- gence, he was not entitled to recover, and they were instructed to return a verdict for the defendant, which they did with- out leaving the box. The railroad com- pain will likely take an appeal in the first two cases. ONE INTERESTING CLASS REUNION.—One of the interesting events in connection with the commencement at State College next week will be a reunion of the class of 1864, in celebration of the fiftieth anni- versity of their graduation. Forty-six members graduated in that class and of this nun_ber twenty-six are known to be dead. The whereabouts of six of the class are unknown and of the other four- teen nine have signified their intention of being present at the reunion, two will be unable to attend on account of ill health and it is just possible the other three who have been invited will also be there. These old students will spend the two days at State as guests of the College and each one has the privilege of taking with him either his wife or a daughter. The only member of the class living in Centre county is William P. Humes, of Bellefonte, the others being scattered from New Jersey to California. The late George L. Potter was one of the deceas- ed members of the class. ——Subscribe for the WATCHMAN PINE GROVE MENTION. Stewart Rockey, of Pittsburgh, was here over Sunday. 0. P. They multiply rapidly, one pussy having a litter of nine kittens and another one seven. It'sa LEMONT. The oats are up and growing fine. The corn is planted and part of it is up. A. W.
