Marshal OODROW WILSON, the Democratic nominee for president, was born in Staunton, Va., on Dec. 28, 1858. He is the son of Dr. Joseph Ruggles Wilson, a Presbyterian minister, whose father, Judge James Wilson, came to America from Ireland in 1808. His mother was, before marriage, Janet Woodrow, the daughter of Thomas Woodrow, a Presbyterian clergyman. He was christened Thomas Woodrow Wilson. He practiced law in Atlanta, Ga., for several years, but abandoned the bar after marrying Ellen Louise Axson of Savannah in 1885. Following his marriage, he held professorships in Bryn Mawr, Wesleyan and Princeton. He has three daugh- ters. Margaret, the eldest, who was born in 188¢, bears a striking resemblance to her distinguished father and joing with him in his favorite game—golf.
