Williams, it being the first he has been home for seven years. He is at present running two large marble and granite yards, one in Tottenville and one at Perth Amboy. “Spring Mills. Mrs. Margaret Donachy, after a ten days visit to Lewisburg, returned home last week. Apparently there will be no scarcity of dwellings in our village when moving day arrives. Magistrate Hering is not improving very rapidly. He has been on the sick list for the past six weeks. All the scholars of the different Sunday schools here received the usual packages of candies nnd oranges. John Horner and family will make an ex- tended visit to the west this spring. Dunachy, a student at the Williams- port Business College, is bere spending the Holidays with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. M. B. Hering. The water supply in our wells is being gradually replenished by the late snows fol- lowed by mild weather. The scare of a water famine has about disappeared. The Christmas vumber of the WATCHMAN was certainly a very handsome one. But that is to be expected, when people suy that the WATCHMAN never does anything by halves. Of course the boys are making preparations for their usual frolic on New Years day. Last year, after parading around town for an hour or two, they made a visit to Miltheim and astonished the natives there. With the villainous character of their teams and their wild apparel. No doubt the program will be repeated. The Lutheran Suuday school entartain- ment on Thursday evening !ast wus a de lightful one. So was the Reformed on the following Sunday evening. The programs were quite lengthy and interesting. The little folks delivered their addresses like orators and the singing was excellent. Both churches were handsomely decorated and crowded to their utmost capacity. Christmas here was celebrated about as usual. Eversbody appeared to be full of fun and good humor, of conrse the little pea- ple were happy with their candy supplies and the big ones with the exchange of gifts. Quite a number of families had large dinner parties. In the afternoon, notwithstanding the disagreeable walking, the streets were gay and lively with merry promenaders. I. B. Jemison. the active and popular in- suran.s agent of eur town, is presenting to his friends a very handsome calendar. By the way, on Saturday evening last the smoke Ronse of station agent Campbell was destroy - ed by fire—insured. Seismic Disturbances Were Followed By a Tidal Wave, Which inundated a City and Wrecked 500 Boats—The Injured Are Stupefied With Terror and Thought End of the World Had Come—Thousands Are Homeless. Rome, Dec. 29.—The three provinces of Cosenzia, Catania and Reggie di Calabria, comprising the department of Calabria, which forms the south western extremity of Italy, or “the toe of the boot,” were devastated by an earthquake, the far reaching effects of which were felt almost throughout the entire country. The town of Messina, in Sicily, with more than 90,000 inhab- jtants, was partially destroyed, and Catania was inundated. In Messina hundreds of houses have fallen and many persons have been killed. Owing to the fact that telegraphic and tele phonic communications were almost completely destroyed, it is impossible to obtain even an approximate idea of the vast damage done. The fate of entire regions within the gone of the earthquake is unknown, but reports received here indicate that the havoc has been great and the de struction to lite and property more terrible than Italy has experienced in many Vears., All reports show that the present catastrophe embraces a larger area than the earthquake in 1905. The tidal wave which followed the earth shocks on the eastern coast of Sicily sunk ves- gels and inundated the lower part of Catania. It is known that a number of people were killed at that place, but the rushing waters carried everything before them and caused such an inde scribable confusion that it will be im- possible for some time to estimate the damage and the lives lost. Several Thousand Killed. The city of Messina has suffered probably more than any other place, the latest information stating that two-thirds of the town was destroyed and that several thousand persons were killed. The steamers Washington and Montebello, which were in that harbor, later proceeded to Catania, loaded with injured, who were so stu pefied by terror that they seemed umn- able to realize what had happened, simply saying that it looked as though the end of the world had come. The injured numbered thousands, At Catania the panic stricken peo ple, fearing new shocks, absolutely re- fused to re-enter their houses and are | jnserestiog camping on the squares, which are | free from water, and the surrounding country. The tidal wave sunk 500 boats there and did great damage to several large vessels and steamers, including the Austrian steamer Buda. Not only did Catania suffer from the effects of a tidal wave, but a similar body of water inundated the hand- some streets of Messina which flank the harbor, covering them with a thick layer of mud, which rendered more pire. Later on he may make his way eatarrh, m, anemis, Dervous- dificult the succoring of the wounded, | through Siam, Barmah, Hiodustan, Pales- | bi Supa, gees] Sebiiess “nd many of whom could be seen lying un- tine and Turkey. It effects its wonderful cures, not sim der the wreckage. It is reported that the villages of Faro and Ganzirri, ad- joining Messina, have disappeared. The effects of the earthquake were aggra- vated by fire through an explosion of gas, the flames, which swept along| several of the streets, adding terror upon terror. Carried Saints From Churches. In some places, such as Prizzo, Co- trone, Santa Severina and Piscopio, the people had the courage to enter the churches almost while they were falling and carry out the saints. They bore these in procession through the open country, invoking the mercy of God. In the mountainous regions in- land the population has taken refuge in grottos and caves, where peasants and priests, soldiers and persons of gentle birth are living in common. Their bed is the ground, and fires are kept burning to keep off wild animals. In Albi alone 2000 people are home- less. Extraordinary scenes are reported at Catania. Following a violent earth shock the sea rose in a tremendous wave, which wrecked many smacks. It ten suddenly retired from the shore and returned as quickly, causing fur- ther great damage and wreckage. Awakened by the shock, the inhabit- ants fled panic stricken from their homes into the streets and squares. Processions were organized, and soon all the churches were flilled with weep- ing crowds imploring divine mercy. Will Vanquish Hog Cholera. As a result of perfecting a serum that is an antitoxine against hog cholera. the Missouri Agricuitural college issued a statement guaranteeing the state legislature that with an appropriation of $45,000 a year it will save the farm: ' ers of Missouri from $1,000,000 to $5, 000,000 annually. The agricultural college announces unequivocally that it now is prepared to vanquish hog cholera. The serum is drawn from what is known as a bhyper-immunized hog, the fibering being removed so as to pre vent clotting. The serum is treated with small quantities of carbolic acid. Child Killed By Fighting Parents. Alfred Turner, ten weeks of age, was killed in a peculiar manner dur ing a fight between his parents. wil liam Turner, the child's’ father, ac cording to the report made to the Philadelphia police. attacked his wife because she did not have breakfast ready when he came down stairs. Mrs. Turner had the child in her arms, and in the fight she dropped it to the floor. r She was subsequently knocked down |4 ’ or fell upon the infant, crushing it to death. Both parents were arrested, Found $10,000 In Old Can. Patrick Sullivan. the driver of an fce wagon, found a $10,000 bill in the bottom of an old tomato can that he had picked vp in an alley in the residence section of East St. Louis. Conrad Reeb, cashier of the Southern Illinois National bank. examined the bill through a microscope and said it appeared to be a genuine gold cer tificate. The bill was taken to the sub- treasury in St. Louis for further ex- amination. Think Children Have Cattle Diseas=.
