It is dificulf to bring home to the average young man or woman of to- day, in a way that can be easily un- derstood, the fact that a college edu- cation is within the easy grasp of any one who has a mind to lift himself or herself to a position where leader- ship among one's fellows may be right- fully acquired and consistently held. young man or woman who felt the ! yearning for something higher and bet- ter, and that he felt that in that short space of time with each, he could scare sway enough false obstacles and sup- ply enough soil for the growth of ambition to fill the colleges of the | country. Dickinson College, which will in 1908 | | celebrate the 125th anniversary of her of the country, furnishes remarkable | | evidence to show that a college edu- | | cation is almost invariably followed | Thousands of earnest young people | yearn for the elevating and ennobling | influence and associations which higher education brings, but in the path of many, the dimly defined dragon of ENORMOUS EXPENSE rears its monstrous bulk, at the first glimpse of which, many a brave heart shudder- ingly slinks backward to the easy- going and unprofitable ways of ignor- | tendents of schools, 51; ance, while a few daring souls ad- | vance to the observation hill of INVES- TIGATION to find the horrible monster to be nothing more than a stuffed bug- a-boo, a sham, a stage-property, any- thing but an impassable obstacle, and | foreign ministers, 1; to the vantage | gress, 50; points which a college education of- | tatives, 121; smilingly proceed fers. The colleges of the land have thou- sands upon thousands of students who make enough money at employment during the vacation months to see themselves comfortably through the scholastic terms, or who, with the as- sistance furnished by a good friend, or in many cases the college (itself, finance their collegiate career suc- cessfully. There are few colleges in the coun- try that give such earnest and enthu- giastic help and advice to prospective students as the ancient college of Dick- | inson, located at Carlisle, Pennsylva- nia. The president of Dickinson Col- | lege, George Edward Reed, is a self made man, of just the type to enthuse the youth without many resources, who feels that he would like to rise above the level of ignorance. President Reed is one of the few modern college presi. dents who attends in person to every inquiry made for information concern- | ing the wonderful institution which be | and many other brilliant men ‘have spent a century and a quarter in up- | building. President Reed says that many of the students at Dickinson find ways out serious interference with their col- lege work. A more appropriate environment could hardly be selected for a college than the old garrison town of Carlisle. Identified with the early history of the country as it has been, a nursery of high minded patriotism, and refined as it has been by the presence of some of the greatest minds of America, its classic shades form an appropriate setting for the venerable Dickinson. Carlisle is pre-eminently a city of churches, a city of parks, the greatest library town of the state, the home of refinement and culture, and according to the public prints, the greatest ath- letlc community in the country. President Reed, of Dickinson, earn- estly feels that he can give help to any young men or women who wish to consider possibilities of college ed- ucation for themselves, and he will gladly take up their inquiries per- sonally.
