OE ————————————————————————————————————— Bellefonte, Pa., July 19, 1907. ADMITS UNCLE WAS INSANE Harry Orchard Recalled to Stand In Haywood Trial. Belse, 1daho, July 16.—Another war rant charging perjury against a wit- ness who has testified ir the defense of Haywood, for the murder of Frank Steunenberg, was issued. C. W. Aller, formerly a telegraph operator and ticket agent for the Fiorence & Cripple Creek railroad at Cripple Creek, is charged with the offense by the prose cuting attorney of Ada county. Eleven witnesses in rebuttal were examined. Harry Orchard reappeared on the stand and was niked a few questions as to his acquzintance with some of the witnesses for the defense who have testified as to his movements, On being cross-examined, Orchard ad- mitted that his uncle, Peter McKinney, committed suicide by hanging 14 or 18 vears ago. Counsel for the defense asked Orchard if this uncle was not insane before he killed himself, and also tried to show by the witness that his maternal grandfather was insane, his monomania being imaginary crimes committed a long time ago in Ireland. Orchard denied all knowledge of the grandfather, but admitted that his un- cle was demented for a year or so, al though not over imaginary crimes. HOW THE ELKS GROW 49,000 New Members Recelved During the Year. Philadelphia, July 16. — The 43d grand lodge session of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks was for mally opened at the Grand Opera House, when the visiting delegates and memberg of the organization were wel- comed to the city on behalf of the Eiks' reunion committee by Daniel J. Shearn. Congressman J. Hampton Moore made the address of welcome on behalf of Philadelphia lodge, No. 2, and Mayor Reyburn greeted the dele gates on behalf of the municipality. Governor Edwin 8. Stuart welcomed the Eiks to the state of Pennsylvania. Grand Secretary Fred. Robinson is- sued his statistical and financial re- port, in which it was shown that 49,000 members were received into the order during the year. There were 38 new lodges instituted, and the total mem- bership is now 254,532. The largest lodge is Brooklyn, No. 22, which has 22,440 members; New York is second, and New Orleans, Philadelphia and Chicago follow. The feature of the day's events was the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” around the city hall by hundreds of members of the organization. FRIGHT KILLS PRISONER Hanover Man Falls Dead In His Cell in York, Pa, Jail. York, Pa., July 13.—A queer case of mortality cccurred here. Page Evans, of Hanover, Pa., a young barber, who had heen charged with larceny, arrest. ed and locked up in the county jail, suddenly turned stone blind, reeled and fell over dead in a few hours after his incarceration. Experts who have look: ed into the case are somewhat puzzled as to whether the man died from fright, it being his first offense, or whether he secretly took some poison. ous drug which robbed him of his eye sight and caused his death. Evans’ crime was a petty larceny a few cheap razors. The thought of having been apprehended seemed to have af fected him greatly and when shut in behind the large iron doors there was a noticeable change in his appear ance, A nost-mortem examination will be held to ascertain the exact cause ~{ his death, PENNSYLVANIA RAIL The Current in Arrangements are progressing for the electrification of a vumber of Cavadian cities, making ose of the power genwated ou the Canadian side of the Niagara Falls. The Hydro-Electric Commission, represent- ing the Government, has made a contract with the Ontario Power Company for be- tween 25,000 and 100,000 horse-power to he supplied during the entire day and the Commission is now engaged in making contracts with the different municipalities which aie within practical distance. It has been successful in a great number of cases, avd at the present time there are | contracts aggregating 40,000 horse-power. | The current is to be delivered at the trans- | former station by the power company for { $10 40 per horse-power. The Canadian ! Government will erect and maintain the | transmission lines and deliver the power | to the municipalities at the actual cost. The contract with the power company bolds for 10 years, and will, it is estimated, realize §1 000.000 per year for the company. The municipalities already availing themselves of this proposition are as follows : Toronto, Toronto Junction, Guelph, London, Wood- stock, Ingersoll, Stratford, Galt, St. Mary's, Preston, Berlin, Waterloo, Hespeler, Brant- ford and St. Thomas. The old fable of the grasshopper who sang and danced through the summer and starved in the winter is only a parable of life. If we would have strength in old age we must store it in the summer of life. It is important that men in middle age should vot allow the vital powers to run low. To prevent this requires something more than a stimulant. It requires a medicine which will increase the appetite, give the stomach power to convert the food eaten into nour- Canada.
