~~ Bellefonte, Pa., April 22, 1904. Silly Neatness. One hears so much nowadays about hy- genic housekeeping and sanitary matters generally that it seems impossible that any woman who can read ordinary printed mas- ter can fail to have some knowledge on this important question. But for all that it is certain that the woman whose housekeep- ing may be described as ‘‘nasty-nice,’’ and whose methods are of fifty years ago, bas by no means died out in the land. She lin- gers here and there with her old-fashioned prejudices and preferences. She prides herself, it may he, on the fact that every article of clothing of herself or of her children taken off at night is care- fully folded, one piece upon the other, be- fore she gets into hed. This is a piece of folly exacted by elders in past days—a rem- nant of old-fashioned Victorian tidiness. Almost better the methods of the average man who flings one garment here and an- other there. At last they get some chance to ventilate. It is better still when clothes are separated and hung for the night near the open windows. Then there is the woman who prides her self upon the fact that her bed is never seen unmade; that before she goes down to breakfast it is immaculately remade, with ite French bolster and its starched ‘‘*hams’’ and its interior, alas ! still warm. It may be a radiant piece of furniture, but all the same it is a festv, unhealthy sleeping place. Then there is the housekeeper who goes out against dust as if she were a London policeman and dust a street gamin. She has but one idea—it must be “moved on,”’ and so with a flapping cloth or that ridicu- lous household utensil, the feather duster, she stirs it up and whacks it from place to place, but never learns to gather it up into | a soft duster and remove it to some place | where it will be rebreathed. | The care of clothes in a closet is another | matter often mismanaged. Everyone knows ' how quickly wardrobes grow fusty and the “happy day may come when architects will | manage some method of ventilation for cupboards other than by rcccasionaily leav- ing the doors wide open. In the meantime, if all clothes are perfectly cooled and aired before they are hung up. and if they are carried out from time to time and hnng in the open air for a few honrs, this diffienlty will be very largely met. The lives of women who keep house will he simplified and sweetened when they all learn to ‘“‘nse their brains to save their hod- Business Notice. CASTORIA For Infants and Children. James Rine of High street employ- ed in the planing mill, says: I can speak as highly now of Doan’s Kidney Pills as I did years ago and my case is pretty good evidence that the cures made by them are not temporary. I have not had any of the severe pain in my back since I used Doan’s Kidney Pills while before I could not put on my shoes and could hardly drag myself around. Though I have had slight touches of backache it never amounted to much. Japs Slaughtered Detachment of Sharpshooters on Island of Samo- liland, Surprise a Patrol of Fifty Scouts, Pro- ceeding In Three Boats. St. PETERSBURG, April 12.—General Kuropatkin, in a despatch to the Emperor, bearing today’s date, says that General Krasnalinski, on the night of April 8th, ordered a detachment of sharpshooters to cross to the left bank of the Yalu, opposite Wiju. The sharpshooters landed on the is- land of Samoliland and sarprigsed a patrol of fitty Japanese scouts just as the latter were approaching the east side of the island in three boats. The Russians allowed the Japanese to land and then fired on them. Nearly all the Japanese were shot, bay- oneted or drowned and the boats sunk. The Russians sustained no losses. Non-commissioned officers Louchkine and Sonhaschonov distinguished themselves in the fight. On the following day the Japanese low- ered their flag at Wiju and their outposts, which lately have been seen, fell back. On the night of April 9th, four Russians crossed the Yalu to Yenampo(Yongampho) and made towards a Russian village where They remained there twelve hours when they were betrayed by Koreans and found themselves obliged to swim the river, their boat having stiuck on a sand bank. One soldier lost his life. The Japanese pursued the Russians in a boat but were in turn at- tacked by a Russian boat which had come to the rescue of the swimmers. The Jap- anese were all killed and their boat sunk. MAKES A CLEAN SWEEP.--There’s noth- ing like doing a thing thoroughly. Of all the Salves you ever heard of, Bucklen’s Ar- nica Salve is the best.
