John D. Long, former Secretary of the Navy, does not approve the suggestion to build five new battleships every year for the American fighting fleet. ‘‘It is a rate of | increase that is rather more than necessary in my estimation,’’ he said when question- ed about his views of the department of which he once had charge. ‘‘There are many things to be considered before such a wholesale increase in the navy is made. With the present cost of naval construction Congress would hardly be warranted in appropriating for five battleships every year at an aggregate cost of from twenty to twenty-five millions, | using special trains. Four teaspoonfuls of creolin to a quart of water or four table- spoonfuls to a gallon make a 3 per cent mixture. Shake well. It will not only kill the fleas, but heal up the bitten places and small ekin irritations, cleanse and soft- en the hair and remove all unpleasant odors the animals may contract froin running in unclean localities. So says the New Hamp- shire experiment station.— Bulletin. ‘Leaves $114,000 to His Housekeeper. By the terms of the will of Charles F. Sharpless, a retired merchant, who died in May, which admits to probate in Phila- delphia last Tuesday, his estate, which is valued at $114,300, is bequeathed to his housekeeper, Grace O'Connell, with the stipulation that at her death the property is to revert to the Old Men’s Home, in ‘West Philadelphia. Letters testamentary were granted to the Girard Trust company and to Grace O'Connell. ——It is really surprising how bashful some young fellows are when confronted by a bright faced young lady. Here is one on a young man who went into a store recently for a pair of supporters, and when a young lady clerk came to wait on bim he had scarcely voice enough to tell her what he wanted. After stammering ous his desire a bright idea struck him and he added in tones of seeming great relief: ‘They aren’t for me. They are for a friend.”’ Buf this got him into deeper | water for the saleslady sweetly inquired : ! “Oh, yes, for a friend. 1 might have : known it. Now what kind does she wear. ¢ ——A little boy in his night dress was | on his knees saying his prayers and his lit- | tle sister could not resist the temptation to : tickle the soles of his feet. He stood it as long as he could and then said : ‘‘Please, God, excuse me while I knock the stuffin’ | out of Nellie.’ A WONDERFUL INVENTION.—I¢ is in- teresting to note that fortunes are frequent- ly made by the invention of articles of minor importance. Many of the most pop- ular devices are those designed to. benefit the people and meet popular conditions, and one of the most interesting of thes2 that has ever been invented 1s the Dr. White Electric Comb, patented Jan. 1, ’99. These wonderful combs positively cure dandruff, hair falling out, sick and ner-: vous headaches, and when used in connec- tion with Dr. White’s Electric Hair Brush, are positively guaranteed to make straight hair carly in 25 days’ time. The trusis are not breaking up into the smaller con- ' cerns that were merged into them. The trusts are the greatest labor-saving inven- tion yet made, and they will stay till they can be replaced by something better. ‘ There is only one trouble with the trusts, They enable men to produce ‘more wealth with less waste of energy than was ever possible before but they take most of the wealth away from those who do the work and give itto those who do the owning of stocks and bonds. Suppose that we who work for a living should decide to do the owning ourselves, and to run the trusts for the benefit of all. cote cE onc ef ccc fn. nel lls tiscali, THAT WOULD BE SOCIALISM.
