Part of the Gettysburg Battlefield Just Secured Adjoins Bloody Angle. The Dead Lay Thick There. Members of the Battlefield Park Com- mission Tell of the Great Fight that Occurred at the gpot. The condemnation proceedings on trial before the United States Court for a piece of land at Gettysburg which ended ab- ruptly Thursday by the land owners ac- cepting the award of the jury of condem- nation, recalled some vivid scenes of the great battle. The land wanted by the government is to the right and a little back of the Bloody Angle, which is called the high water mark of the rebellion. This is where Pickett’s Division came up in its famous charge, and to most people Pick- ett’s Division is the central figure of the great conflict, yet more men lay dead near the ground that was before the Court than in front of the stone wall at the angle. Two of the Gestysburg Battlefield Com- missioners, Major C. A. Richardson, who was in the battle of Gettysburg as com- mander of the One Hundred and Twenty- sixth New York Volunteers, and Major William S. Robbins, who was also in the fight on the other side with the Fourth Alabama Regiment, and Colonel Emmor B. Cope, the engineer of the corymission, were in the city as witnesses, and told the story of this field. In Pickett’s Division were three brigades of Virginia troops, but they were supported by two other divisions of six brigades of North Carolina and Ala- bawa troops. Major Robbins said : “‘The corespondents of tha Richmond papers told only the story of the Virginians and the deeds of the others were not recorded. Yet the troops on Pickett’s left struck a strong- er line of Union troops and their losses were much heavier.” Colonel Cope said : ‘‘After the struggle an officer called my attention to the dead on the field where the brigade of General Brockenhrough had charged. The Con- federate dead iay thicker there than any place on the field.” In response to a query by Judge Arch- bald, who was in the party, why General Lee should have thought such a frontal at- tack possible to be successful, Major Rob- bins said : The night before, July 2ud, the brigade of General Wright had occupied she ground at the Bloody Angle, driving the Union troops from their guns, but had not enough men to hold the position. Hence it was inferred it was a weak spot.”’ Major Richardson said : ‘“The fact that Wright was able toget in was because the ‘bulk of the Union troops at the spot bad been temporarily sent away to assist in re- pulsing an attack at another place.”” Ma- Jor Richardson corrobated the story of the heavy loss of the troops who came up on the extreme right of Hancock's Corps. The North Carolinians who formed the supporting columns of Pickett’s Division have shown much feeling over the stories of the fight that give all the credit of the great frontal attack to the Virginians. In one story of the flight by Captain Bond, of the North Carolina troops, there is an in- sinuation that the Virginians deserved lit- tie or no credit, but that the greatest gal- lantry was shown and the heaviest losses were sustained by the men who charged up to the left and right of the Virginia Division, RTT RA The Champion Typewriter. ‘Miss Mary E. Pretty, a clerk in the gov- ‘ernment employ at Washington, proved herself the most expert typewritist in the world, in all probability, a few days ago, when she wrote 20,400 words in six hours and read her own copy from closely writ ten manuscript. Her work did not aver- age one error to the page. The young lady who has so suddenly gathered fame, is just twenty-one, and left Philadelphia last March to accept a position in the patent office at Washington. She was appointed mwder the civil service. Her success is as smuch of a surprise to herself as anybody ~else, for she never thought there was any- “thing remarkable ahont her way of operat- “ing a typewriter. She does not claim to use sany special eystem, unless it be one of her ~own, which she would not know how to “teach to any one else. ; Before going to Washington she worked ¥or a commercial house in Philadelphia and was paid $12.50 a week. She is now paid on a basis of $720 a year, but has every reason to expect rapid promotions antil she reaches $1,400, the highest salary paid to a female stenographer. Miss Pretty took a business course in one of the schools of Philadelpeia and im- mediately obtained employment with a mercantile firm. She never tried to gain unusual speed on the typewriter, but al- ways dispatched her own work as quickly — as easily as possible, with no unneces- sary flurry. Her hands are small and have hardly lost their chubbiness, and yet the; glide over the keys of a typewriter wit remarkable ease and agility. Those who have watched her work say that the secret of her success is steady nerves and a power of concentration, which is better than any - system of operating a typewriter that hae ever been invented. oo RIERA Fire Leaves 2,000 Homeless.
