§ i k & § ! t | : ; Bellefonte, Pa., February 7,1902. FOR AND ABOUT WOMEN. During the past twenty-five years a con- siderable change has been effected in the treatment and furnishing of floors. This seems a short period in which to reckon when the history of floor coverings dates from far back before the Christian era, even to the ancient days of Egyptian splendor. Prior to this time primitive ages had adopted the fur skins of wild beasts to make a comfortable foothold in their habi- tations, says the ‘‘Delineator.’” The Bab- ylonians were renowned for their weaving of rugs and the ornamentation they intro- duced. From them the art was passed on to the Persians aud the people of India, and so through Asia and Eastern Europe, and after the Renaissance, into France and England. In this country rugs are becom- ing more and more in demand in place of carpets. Irom a hygenic standpoint they are much to be preferred. All sorts of things in old rose, verging on ‘the ox-blood shades, are going to be worn by little girls this year. There are many pretty things made up for them in wash and other materials. It is all very well for women to be de- voted to home, to husband and to chil- dren,” said one of Philadelphia’s nurses yesterday,’ I know more than one woman who would be better physically and men- tally, if they did.not stay in the house so much. ‘“The staying indoors’ habit is a very in- -gidious one; the more you give way to it, the less inclination you have for going out. | “The result is, that the stay-at-home victim becomes nenrasthenic, low-spirited, morbid and irritable. I know women who stay in the house through sheer indolence; they hate to stir out of their rocking chair and $0 go to the trouble of getting dressed up. Very many women are kept indoors on ac- count of the pressure of domestic duties, and still others have a dread, more or less ‘ill-founded, of exposure to the weather. ‘‘It pays every woman to get out of the house daily into the fresh air and sunlight; +o take a brisk, long walk. Street cars have Spoiled women; they think they must get into a car to ride a few blocks. The art of walking among city women, at least is rap- idly becoming a lost art. | “Women, too, are all the better mental- Wy for mingling among people, getting into <rowds, seeing new faces and new scenes. It is a great deal better for a woman to let the dust accumulate on the furniture than on herself, and a cobweb had better be in the corner of the room than on her brain motwithstanding that cleanliness is a cardi- wal doctrine of the nurse’s creed. One of ‘the distressing symptoms of neurasthenia is a chronic state of evil foreboding. The victim of nerves studies herself, for ail- ‘ments, her wants, her loneliness, or she is forever anticipating trouble for herself or for her children. Living so much within ‘herself, it is easy for her to fall into a habit -of brooding over troubles, real or imagi- mary, often the latter. This condition of injury not only works injury to her health, bus reacts upon her disposition, her ideas ‘become narrowed aud insular, and she Hoses interest in and sympathy with others. “The home is no longer a pleasant place for anyore within it and least of all for the sufferer, whose unhappy conditions might {although she would probably not believe i6) be traced to her own mistake in persist- ently ignoring the call of nature for sun- light, pure air and innocent diversion.” The latest edict of fashion calls for a sleeve of much larger proportions in all outdoor garments. This is more especial- ily noticeable in evening wraps, although ‘many of the newer coat and jacket sleeves are greatly enlarged in size particularly from the elbow down. It stands to reason ‘that the elahorate sleeve of the smart gown «or separate waist cannot be crowded into a tight outer sleeve without detriment. ‘Women who have formed the habit of standing in a bent. back-burdened atti- tude exaggerated this bad position of the body when they walk—especially if there is a sense of ‘‘hurry’”’—in the brain, says the Chqutuaquan Magazine. Cannot every wo.nan who reads these lines call up the mental picture of some neighbor hurrying, in a sort of dog-trot gait, about her work with body bent forward nearly one-third from the upright, the head and shoulders ‘being quite iu advance of the 1est of the ‘body, as if the legs could not, or would not go fast enough for the impatient brain and body ? This is the ‘‘haste that makes waste.”’ Such a position means straining and enfeebling the poor back, and it means interference with breathing, circulation and «digestion. It is courting heaviness of move- ment, heavivess of spirit and oldness of body. It annonnces that the woman is not master of her work; rather her work wmas- ters and drives her. Now, we all must ac- knowledge that this is wrong. A woman with much depending upon her should, first of all,be able wisely to direct the body in her work, and second, not to let her work own her, however much it may be in quantity. When one is well-poised, fiee and buoyant in bodily movement one can .walk rapidly; or even run, while doing one’s work and suffer none of the exhaus- hurry. An Arab proverb well pats it that’ “Hurry is the devil.”’ ourselves secare and free from his malign influence ? tive effects that always attend the spirit of | Undoubtedly white shirt-waists will be the smartest of the season. Gaunzy lawns, fodia linens and organdies with smoo shoulders, all-around trimming effects of lace tucks and embroidery, infinite variety of guimpe designs, and numerous variation of insertings—bayadere, lengthwise, diag- onal, lozenge, etc.—mark the latest white shirt-waists. The full length sleeve is shown in a va- riety of forms, easy at the shoulder and quite fall below the elbow. Some have long pointed cuffs, some with tucks and again variations and modifications of the marquise, bishop and cavalier styles. For the plain tailored shirt-waist a sleeve with a very narrow wristband scarcely as wide as those nsed last summer will be made. Bat instead of fastening over on the inside «of the arm as they did then, the style en regle this season is cat straight edged with square corners and opens and is fastened, as of yore,at the back of the arm with link cuff buttons or just buttons. The front or hack opening question is a burning one among those exhibiting sever- al advance showings just now.
