By the occupation of Winburg, General Jan Hamilton puts him self nearly parallel with Lord Roberts and only twenty-nine miles eastward, while he has the additional advantage of being con- nected with his chief by means of the rail- road that runs from Smaldeel to Winburg Road station, as it is sometimes called, to Winburg. Lord Roberts reports to the war office, in a dispatch dated Smaldeel, May 6, after- noon, as follows: “We crossed the Vet river this morning Lot... Attention, Comrades of the 148th P. V.I, PITTSBURG, May 1.—An regimental re- union and campfire of the suvivors of the 148 P. V. I. will be held in the post hall of the Grand Army at Gettysburg, Pa., on Wednesday evening, June the 6th at 7:30 o’clock, on the week of the 34th Annual Department Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic. The headquarters of the Regiment will be at the City hotel, situated on Main street, and covenient to all railroad stations. Rates $1.50 per day. It is hoped that every surviving comrade of our Regiment will make an effort to be present at this reunion. We want to arrange at this reunion to have our position on the 3rd day battle line marked with granite markers and a center piece. On the markers will be ‘‘Right of 148 Regiment P. V. 1.7? “Left of 148 P. V.1.,”” on the center piece wil be a trefoil, or corps badge 148 Regiment P. V. I. 1st Brigade, 1st Division, 2d corps, army of the Potomac, with these words. ‘‘This position was held by the 148 Regiment July 3rd, 1863.” For details of the part taken and losses of the Regiment—see monument in the wheat field where the Regiment fought July 2nd, 1863, and drove the rebels into the woods in the rear. These markers will be of granite and will cost about 80 dollars. A small amount has been cellected for this purpose. It is hoped that every comrade will contribute his share to the markers.
