portation Company's line, struck a sand-bar
and sunk near the mouth of White river on the
night of the 20th. She had 203 tons of Govern
ment and private freight and 65 passengers. Beat
and cargo a total loss. The E. Durfeo the next
day took on board the passengers. No lives
were lost. The Reese was valued at $20,000.

at $ 100,000. Full amount of insurance unknown.
Wear & Allison, of this city, had $20,000 in

Ore at Storm at Chicago.
Chicago, June 24. A terrific thunder storm
passed over this city last evening. The rain
fell in torrents for nearly an hour, accompanied
by witd, and much damage was done to build
ings in course of erection. Wails were blown
down, trees prostrated, and the basements of
stores and saloons were flooded. The losses
will probably exceed $50,000. No marine dis
asters are reported. The tunnel under the river
at Washington street is inundated, the water
pouring in at each end.
Fatal Shooting Case.
Milwaukee, June 24. Robert Willis, colored,
was shot and killed in Rochester, Minn., by a
white man named Stevens. The difficulty grew
out of a guitar trade, Involving $1-50. Stevens
was arrested.
A New Disease
has attacked the hogs in Fulton county, Illinois,
different in symptoms from hog cholera, and
eeems more like congestive chill, as manifested
in human beings.- When the hogs are attacked
they bunch up together. The chill is followed
by fever, when they soon die. The percentage
of deaths is large.
Accounts from various localities in the North
west represent that the locusts are dying in
great numbers. In many places the ground is
thickly covered with dead ones, and few live
ones are seen. They have, however, done much
damage to the young forest trees.

1 have had one of the American Combination Ma
chines for nearly three years, and cheerfully testify
to its many excellent qualities, as well as Its dura,
blllty. I bad previously used tbe "Wheeler A t U
Bob, "Grover & Baker," and "Singer " I thlnfc. that
the "American" makes the most perfect stitch of
all sewing machines, and decidedly prefer It to any
other machine that I am familiar with. It requires
hardly any eilort to run it, and its entire operation
is exceedingly simple and eav,

It Is the best In the market for all or any kind of
work. It Is so simple in its construction that a child
may readily guide it. My family would not be with
out It nnder any circumstances.

Dear Sih : I booght one of the American Button
hole Ovcrseaming aud Complete Sewing Machines,
about four weeks ago, for the purpose of making
buttonholes in lasting and kid shoes. After having
the machine one week, and having bnt onb lesson
on thb SAUK, I was enabled to make 600 holes per
day. I am now (after fonr weeks practice) making
780 boles per day, in a superior manner aud with per
fect ease. Am very much pleased with tbe machine,
and can heartily recommend it to all those wanting
a machine for such purposes.
SALLY FENIMORE.
Mount Lebanon, ANegheny co., Pa,
I have lately become the possessor of one of the
new and wonderful American Family Sewing Ma
chines, and I reel surprised and delighted with its
trnly overwhelming performances. It only requires
to be known to supersede all others now in use. No
one need delay purchasing, for I am convinced that
this Machine baa arrived to a verv great degree of
perfection. J. E. WILSON, M. D.
Messrs. Hall A Bosley, Gents: The American
Machine which I bought of you last spring gives me
the highest satisfaction. I have received hardly an
instruc tion, yet can do ail kinds of sewing on it with
perfect ease. The best thing I can wiuh for any
housekeeper Is that she may have as perfect a Sew
ing Machine as the American.
Yours truly, MRS. T. M. JONES.
