THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PfflLADgLmiA, SATUfrtfAf, MAY G, 187 1. OITT ITB1CS. The Knickerbocker Umianre CimptBj'i The following report has been Issued in reference to the affairs of this Company: Pursuant to the authority tested In me by law, and In accord noe with an intention expressed in Bay annual resort of 18T0 to the Legislature of this State, I have snade and canned to be made certain examination Into the affairs aad condition of scro tal of the insurance companies doing; business in this State. J In the morfth of November, 1970, an examination Of the boekk, aotonnts, assets, and general condi tion of the Knickerbocker Life Insurance Company Of New York was Instituted. That examination has Just been completed, and although in the an nual report referred to it was distinctly announced that "It need tot be considered as an imputation open the standing of any oompany that It is under examination," still, as It Is claimed that an effort kas been made to nse the fact of the protracted In vestigation la this case, to the disadvantage or the company, I deem it due to the company and also to the public to make a rtport of the result of such examination. The examination was not made In consequence of any speclilo charges against the company or its management, but In accordance with the general Intention above referred to. The Knickerbocker was organized in 1853, upon ft capital or $108,00, and for the first ten years Its progress was slow. Since 1803, however, Its busi ness has rapidly increased, until, as appears by the annual statement or the condition of the company, December 81, 1869, It bad outstanding 22,078 poli cies, Insuring the sum of (06,393,439, with aggregate assets of JG.GSS.BCB, and aggregate liabilities of 5,80.T01. There were but three companies organized nndcr the laws of New York which reported a larger amonnt of business done or more assets. The business of the company was done on the "note" plan, and consequently quits a large portion of Its assets consisted or premium notes. It ha l been intimated that note companies were quite careless in regard to the accuracy or the state ment or assets, and that notes were frequently in claded ari'ongthe assets which were, in ract, given lor premiums upon pelicies not in force, and hence Of no value. The Knickerbocker .being a leading note com pany, it was thought best to make, at as early a date as practicable, a thorough investigation of all Its affairs, with a view to settling this and other questions, at least so far as that company was con cerned. The examination made has been most extensive and exhaustive. All the notes, amounting in the aggregate to over 25,000 in number, have been sepa rately examined, a full list made and compared with the entries in the books, and they have, without ex ception, been found to be notes given upon policies In force. All the other assets and accounts or the company have also been subjected to the closest scrutiny, and quite large amounts standing upon the hoiks against agents have been disallowed, from Which the company will no doubt be able ultimately to realize, but which are of so uncertain a value as to prevent their being allowed in my estimate or the condition or the company. Notwithstanding the thorough sifting to which the assets or the company have been subjected, however, I am happy to be able to state that they amounted, on the tlrst day or January, 1S71, tothe earn or 7,02(973 -85, while the liabilities, including reserve fund and capital stock, amounted to ta,S4t, 96'28, leaving a surplus or assets over all liabilities of $175,977'59. This surplus, however, would be in creased to A50,6G2S4 by including the amounts dis allowed, as above stated, which are claimed by the company to be valid and available assets, thus show ing the company to be entirely solvent, and entitled to the confidence of Its policy-holders and the public. It alTords me much pleasure, also, to be able to atate that the Company has adopted the policy of, aa rapidly as possible, abandoning the "note" sys tem and effecting Insurances upon the all-cash basis, and that with this and other improved me thods or business adopted, and the extensive busi ness already established, the Company has every prospect of continued success. Complaints have been made against this as well as other comyanles, of a want or fairness and libe rality towards policy-holders, but so far as the facts appear, from my investigation, I find that the Knickerbocker has honorably and promptly met and discharged all legitimate claims, the gross Bum paid for such claims upon policies since its crganlzatlon amounting to 12,831,819-86, ' besides dividends paid to policy-holders amounting to J95, 424 89. In view of all the facts disclosed, I feel warranted In saying that the Company Is entitled to public con fidence. Georgb W. Miller, Superintendent Insurance Department State of New York. Injtoiocs Effect of Too Much Food. Undoubt- dly many of the Ills that flesh Is heir to, partlcu- .fly In the vernal months, arise from the common practice of imposing upon the stomach more food than that organ can properly digest. Persons or sedentary habits are particularly liable to be injured by giving fuil scope to their appetites. By Indulging at night and at other unseasonable hours in rich viands, cannot fall to produce indigestion, dyspep sia, skin diseases, and sometimes, when the system becomes overcharged with blood, that dangerous disorder, apoplexy. The habit or partaking or noc turnal meals rapidly alters the "tone" or the system and diminishes the solvent powers of the digestive organs. Frequent and active exercise would work off the Injurious effect arising from free living, but persons who thus Indulge their appetites usually have no de sire to exert themselves In the open air beyond the limited amount prompted by their inclination or business. The effects, too, of occupations upon the system are very apparent The hardest manual labor In the open air has the influence of exercising a free circulation of the blood aad produces a keen appetite, with a corresponding activity and prompt ness of digestion. The pale and sallow complexions of operatives in woollen mills, Ivory-turners, and of many artisans, are an unfailing evidence that these pursuits are injurious to health, and when constantly engaged In them the poisoned atmosphere of, the apartments often produces a fatal Inflammation of the lungs. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of care, la an old and; truthful saying, Therelore we advise all readers of The telegraph who are troubled with the complaints now very prevalent dyspepsia, headache, indigestion, disordered liver, want of ap petite, nausea, or feverish skins to take without delay Dr. Schekck's Mandrake Pills. We know of no remedy so harmless and decisive in Its action. It at once strikes at the root of the disease and pro daces a healthy tone to the system.
