THE CARDIFF til ANT. A Sheriff Seizes Him for Debt. The St. Louis Democrat of the 7th instant has the following: Everybody in the United States and San Do mingo has beard of the Cardiff Giant. The humbug was exposed after the owners had realized large sums of monev, and then the giant ceased to be a wonder in the East. Seve ral months ago the Cardiff Giant was brought to this city and exhibited to admiring curiosity eeekers at a small admittance fee. The gigantic chow, however, did not draw, and the giant was boxed up and stored away in the old State tobacco warehouse. The owner, Dr. Wilford W Wiley, was about to start out with his treasure on a tour, but he became involved pecuniarily. An execurslon was placed In the hands of the Sheriff, and on Wednesday Deputy Valentine was instructed to take the writ and seize upon the Cardiff Giant. He proceeded to Washing ton avenue, where he found a shop in opera tion with the "Great American Giant" as the heaviest attraction, and was about to levy upon that overgrown specimen, when the idea struck him that under the new constitution a live man could not be imprisoned for debt. The show man told him that he was probably in search of the Cardiff Giant, which was at the old tobacco warehouse. Thither the officer proceeded, and after a long search discovered a box eleven feet In length, with "Cardiff Giant" painted thereon. With great difficulty this box was removed to the Sheriff's warehouse, and there it will remain until the 18th Instant, when it will be knocked down to the highest bidder, unless the amount of the execution and costs shall previously be paid. Yesterday Dr. Wiley went to the warehouse to look after 'his stone. giant. Not finding the wonderful image there, he became almost dis tracted. He rushed about tTle streets tearing his beard and gnashing his teeth in a manner terrible to behold. Meeting an ex-police com missioner, he seized him by the collar and cried, in a wild agonizing tone, The Cardiff Giant has been stolen I Some dastardly thief broke into the house and carried him off !" "Nonsense," said the ex-oOiclal, "no man in the world is strong enough to carry the giant off. The sheriff has got him." "Ah! oh! the villain. I tell you the giant Isn't mine. lie belonirs to my wife. She sold her furniture to buy him. I must have that giant or aiei" Kushinsr to the Sheriffs office, the Doctor de manded the release of his giant, as it was the cropcrtv oi ms wire. 'Belongs to your wife, does it said Deputy Bishop. "All right; here is a Judgment against her also, and we'll hold the giant for both of you. "Would yon seize a woman's household trea sure ? It's all she has sold her furniture to buy it. isn t it exempt iron execution t "No: giants are not exempt when made of stone.' "Oh, my giant! my Cardiff! What will my wife do without her giant t Any one wishing to speculate in giants can doubtless obtain a bargain by attending tne sale. Mrs. Toodles wul be there. C I T Y MOTIC K S.
