THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPtl PiIILA.DKLPHIA, TUKSI) i , APRIL 4, I81. 5 REIT ENGLAND. The Bolton Mttitnnt f Pine Art. The Boston Journal says: The committee of fifty having the charge of the subscription now being mined are making commendable pro pers. The assurances they receive of the in terest of all classes in this enterprise indicates Its popularity, though public attention has scarcely awakened to a full consideration of the Importance of the project. It will be an insti tution which will become in the course of a rery few years the principal object of interest to strangers, ad our own citizens will appre ciate it as affording to them a resort where they can pass aH hour or more, as time permits, seeking either amusement or instruction. The land which it will occupy is worth to-day some four hundred thousand dollars. Nearly two hundred thousand dollars have been subscribed by residents of Boston and other places, lion. Stephen Salisbury, of Worcester, making the generous subscription of five thousand dollars. The paintings and statuary of the Athenrcum, the Gray collection of engravings of Harvard College, the Appleton contribution of rare engravings, the collection of armor made by the late Colonel T. Bigelow Lawrence, will find place beneath its roof. The Museum, therefore, represents an Incon siderable sum at the present moment, for re duced to a cash valuation the property already exceeds seven hundred thousand dollars. The trustees propose, however, to secure its per petual prosperity by avoiding any incumbrance in the shape of a debt. Tber will oroceed to the erection of a portion of the edifice whenever the subscription will warrant it. As it is the wish of all interested that the Museum should be free to the public, a portion of the money will fee appropriated to a fund, the incomo of which will be devoted to the payment of the running expenses. When one hundred thousand dollars more is pledged, we shall see the work of build ing commenced, and this amount will bo freely given by the people, when .they consider that the Museum of Fine Arts will be not merely a new attraction, but an Institution which we feel certain will be regarded with the greatest pride by all classes. Ottawa, April 4. In the Commons Mr. Cart- wiigbt, a prominent member of the Opposition, moved as address to the Queen respecting the withdrawal ol troops and munitions of war from this country. He considered the policy of the Imperial Government a wise one in general.but, with exceptional circumstances In regard to Canada, he regarded as warranting a different course. He thought Mr. Scott's murder should hare been treated in the same manner by the Impe rial authorities as the cases of the AbyBinlan captures; bat in this matter, as in that of Fenian Raid claims, and lu correspondence generally, he . asserted that the Imperial authorities were cool and indifferent concerning the interests of Canada. After referring to the subject of inde pendence, which he desired to keep In the back ground, be concluded by moving an address to the effect that, while fully recognizing the duty of Canada to maintain military defenses, and expressing jno opinion in opposition to The Imperial Policy, in View of the peculiar and analogous position of the Dominion, conterminous for thousands of miles with powerful States, mans of whose in habitants are notoriously actuated by sentiments of bitter hostility to the British empire, we cannot but feel that the withdrawal of troops is calculated to excite much uneasiness in the minds of many of her Majesty's subjects on this continent. Sir George E. Cartier said, as his Address ex pressed generally the wishes of the Government they would not oppose It, but he reminded the mover that there were garrisons at Quebec and Halifax. The House went into Committee on the Ad dress, reported, and asked leave to sit again. FINANOIAL.
