CUT COUNCILS. The'ProceedlnMe Yesterday. Both branches of the city government met T(Verlay. &Vect Council convened at 3-30 P. M. Various petitions were presented and re ft ned. On a resolution to confirm the nominations of the committee appointed to select assist ant engineers of the Fire Department, an exceedingly animated debate ensued, result ing in its passage. An invitation to attend the public meeting at the Academy of Music, in opposition to the Building Commission, was accepted. The Committee on Paid Fire Department afcked to be relieved of any consideration of the resolution relative to the employment of a Burgeon to examine applicants for admission to the department, and the whole subject was tabled. An extra appropriation for the completion of Norris Square was considered, and $ 1000 voted. After considerable routine business, the Council at six o'clock adjourned until next Thursday. A communication from the Norris Iron Com pany for the appointment of an investigating committee was received, to investigate a o in fract awarded to Mr. Worthington. A special committee was appointed. Mr. Rowan onered a resolution to lay water-pipe on Thirty-sixth, Tbirty-seventh, Sycamore, and Aspen streets, in the Twenty- lourtn ward. It was agreed to, with an amendment which required it to be at no ex pense to the city. Air. Walker, from the itnanco Committee, reported a resolution to approve ooutracts for new school buildingt rn the Tenth and Four teenth wards. Agreed to. Al so, an ordinance making an appropria tion of $4000 for the further improvement of Norris Square, Nineteenth ward. Amended by making it $.1000. Mr. waplea, from the Committee on High ways, presented a resolution for paving streets. , Mr. Glenn, chairman of the Committee on Police, offered a resolution requesting the Finance Committee to report a loan bill of $300,000 for erecting eight station-nouses and the building of a steam-tug for police purposes. Mr. Carey, from the Uommittee on Mar kets, presented an ordinance authorizing the erection of new market houses in Girard ave liue, from Third to Lawrenoe, Eighth to Tenth, and Elm to Otis street, and creating a loan of $00,000 for this object- Referred to the Committee on Finance, with instructions to increase the amount to $7.1,000, so that two new sections can be erected in Moya- meEBirg avenue. Mr. Buzby, chairman of the joint special committee on town meeting, reported an ordinance, which was passed, making an appropriation of $1'JG4U3 to defray the ex- per etp. Mr. Allison called up the resolution of re quest to the Legislature to pass the bill to establish a House oi Correction. Agreed to. Mr. Bardsley called up the bill authorizing the paving of Baiu bridge Btreet from Eighth to Ninth, and Federal btrjet from Twenty sixth to Gray's Ferry road, and to repave with stone Carbon Btreet, from Cambridge to Fitz- water, the cost of paving to be taken frjai item three of the appropriation for repaving streets. Mr. Calhonn moved to amend by adding Ninth street, from Moore to Winton. After considerable debate Mr. Wagner moved to indefinitely post pone the considera tion of the bill. Agreed to. Mr. Logan offered a resolution instructing the Chief Commissioner of Highways to fur nish Councils with the names of the contrac tors whoee work is not in accordance with their contiact, so that they may be held re sponsible. Agreed to. Select Council ordinance to lay water pipe on Water and other streets, and the resolu tion of request relative to Wingohocking Park, were considered and concurred in.
