THE DAILY; EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 1871. FROM t'ATK MAY. Hrrnklne; I'p of lfn f Thlorr The Arrent of the ti.bbrr. bv the Farmers and Villager. fVom Our Own Corretpondent. Dennisviixb, Cape May County, N. J., Feb. 27 Far a few days past Cape May has been the scene of considerable excitement, in consequence of the breaking up by the people of a den of thieves, and the arrest of the whole gang, numbering seven. For years they have Infested the county, plundering and stealing from one end to the other, and some of them had already been inside the walls the State Prison. Being a bold, wicked set of men, they were known only to be feared. Le circumstances which at last aroused the people, and which led to the raid upon them and their subsequent arrest, are as follows: On the night of the 8th instant, Mount Pleasant and Seaville Stations, on the Cape May and Millville Railroad, were broken into and plundered of property to the value of several hundred dollars. It was then generally believed that this same gang were the perpetrators. Since then various persons have bad their out houses, eiables, hen-roosts, etc., plundered, and on Wednesday night, 23d, Dennlsville became the scene of their operations, and a number of families were heavy losers in conse quence. On Thursday various consulta tions were held among the people of the village, and it was decided that on Frldaj morning a large force should make a raid upon the settlement, which less in the woods between Denuisvllle and the Court House, and, If pofdble, recover tha stolen property. Numbers joined Ihem from neighboring villages, and the party, numbering about fifty, proceeded in wagons to the suspected territory. II. re i hey were not long in making discoveries even beyond their expectations. Not only the goods which had so recently been etolen were found, but .some were Identified which has been missing as long as two years, some buried in boxes and barrels, some between the weather-boards and plaster oj the houses, most of them being found in the woods sur rounding their miserable habitations. Upon this evidence warrants were issued for their arrest. The ringleader was overtaken by Constable Chester some miles away, and when brought to bay showed fight, when Chester knocked him down with the butt of his pistol and secured him. Ills name Is Facemyer. Five others were arrested on that day three of them named Garrison, one Col well, and one Corson. On Saturday the search was continued, and another arrest made the elder Garrison. All were lodged in jail, and on Sunday Sheriff Steelman, fearing an attempt to break jail, placed nn extra guard outside, well armed. Proceeding inside, he warned the culprits as to what would be the inevitable result of any at- . A ! 1 ' 4 1. l t J If nipt uu tueir park n gum iueir irecuuui, uu also drew from them confessions as to where other goods were secreted, which had thus far failed to be dieoovered. It Is to be hoped that they will receive what they so justly deserve, a long sentence to the State Prison, and the community thus freed from such depredations for years to come. MUSICAL. AND DK ABIOTIC. The CUT Amusements. At thb Walnut Mr. and Mrs. Barney Williams appeared last evening, to a moderately-filled houfee, in the Irish drama of The Fairy Circle, the farce of Tfie Customs of the Country, and .the comedietta of Mho Speaks First? These pieces are all well known, and they give Mr. and Mrs. Williams excellent opportunities to represent the impossible stage Irishman and the equally impossible stage Yankee girl. Of the two performers the lady, as is proper, is the better artist, and there is a real humor in her personations which is lacking in those of Mr. Williams. The performance last evening ap peared to give pleasure to those in attendance, and It excited considerable applause. The same bill will be repeated this evening. At thb Arch Lotta commenced an en gagement last evening to a well-filled house, and delighted her admirers by personating biz dilTereDt parts in John Brougham's concoction entitled The Little Detective. Lotta is as viva cious as ever, and she has apparently lost none of her popularity. The performance last even ing differed in nothing from others she has given in this city, and therefore does not call tor particular comment. Tne Little Detective will be repeated this even ing. At thb Chesnut a large audience was in attendance last evening to witness Mr. Daven port's great personation of "Sir Giles Over reach" in the play of A Kevo Way to Pay Old Debts. The play was remarkably well repre sented and Mr. Davenport's superb acting ex cited the utmost enthusiasm. A JWw Way to Pay Old Debts will be formed again this evening. per- At Concert Hall the child violinist, Amerl cus, Slguora Roselli. M'lle Frieda de Gebele, Ilerr W. Lotti, Mr. Albert Laurence, and other artists will appear this evening in a grand concert. At the Museum, Ninth and Arch streets, a dramatic performance will be given this evening. A matinee to-morrow. At the American a miscellaneous programme will be presented this evening. At thb Assembly Bcildikq the two-headed girl may be seen this afternoon andevening. The German Opera. The sale of subscrip tion tickets for the season of nine performances of German opera to commence on Friday even ing next at tbe Academy of Music will be held to-day, only, at the music store of F. A. North A Co., No. 1026 Chesnut street. The sale of single seats will commence to-morrow. The troupe includes Madame Llchtmay, Madame Fredericl, .Mad'lle Koemer, Mad'lle Haffner, Messrs. Ilabelmanu, Carl Bernard, Himmer, Vierllne, W. Formes, Franosch, Steinecke, Carl Formes,-and others. The operas an nounced are The Jewess, The Uuguenots, Wil liam Tell. Tannhauser, Fra D acolo, titradella, The Magic Flute, and Trovatore. CITY ITiins. Ccrnett's Flobimel An exquisite perfume. Ma. William W. Cassidt, tne jeweller at No. 8 South Second street, has one or the largest and most attractive stocks of all kinds of Jewelry and Silver ware in the city. He has also on hand a fine assort ment of line American Western Watches. Those who purchase at this store at the present time are certain to get the werth of their money. Whitcoub's Asthma Remedy Sure cure. The approach of warm weather, with the old dif ficulty of keeping provisions in a good condition, re minds us that we will need a good and reliable Ice Chest or Refrigerator. The fault of most of the dif ferent makes of refrigerators is that they sweat. When the atmosphere Is made sufficiently cold to preserve meata.et?., sweet, there is no moisture, and whenever there Is any appearance of moisture or sweat It la a sure Indication that the temperature Is too mild for the purpose. The Star Refrigerator manufactured by Messrs. Bozorth & Supple, we be lieve to be entirely free from this objection,, and the makers give the best evidence of their confidence in it by guaranteeing it to preserve a perfectly dry at mosphere, or the money refunded to ihe purchaser. itiAunii:i.
