Foreign A flair a. The news of the conclusion of peace has caused great excitement in Berlin. It has been stipulated that only thirty thousand German troops shall enter Paris. Several of the Paris journals announce that they will suspend publication while the Germans are in that city. The authorities of Paris are very uneasy as to tfee altitude and demeanor of the people when the Germans enter the city. Signatures to the preliminaries of the treaty of peace were delayed by the interven tion of the English, lluasian and Austrian Governments. In tho British House of Commons last night Viscount Enfield said that the Govern ment was anxious to define its external duties toward other nations. Sunday being the anniversary of the pro clamation of the republio of 1848, the "Reds" of Paris held a mass meeting in the Plaoe de Bastile. The demonstration was very dis orderly, and was marked by violence. John Hess escaped from the Oshkosh, Wis., jail, on Saturday night, and then went to Neenab, the residence of his divorced wife, whom he murdered. Officers getting upon his track, he finished the fearful tragedy by bhooting himself through the head. PANIC IN A THEATRE. A FrluMfol t!ataatrathe Averted An Alarm of lir Bud a Fanic-Mirlcken Audleace. On Saturday night last an Incident occurred in the Stadt 'Iheatre which came near resulting, through a panic iu the audience, in one of the most Irightful catastrophes which can betal a large assemblage. There were not less than twenty-three hundred persons in the theatre, the occasion being a benefit tendered to Madame Seebach, and the popular piece of Die Eine Weint, Die Andere Lacht waa being per formed. In a scene of the second act, when Mad. Seebacb, M. Dombrowski, and Mile. Scboltz were on the' stage, some person up in the upper gallery, unable to hear Mile. Scholz, kept up for some time a continoua volley of yeJls of "louder." Another person In his vicinity taia to ine nowiing one, -jveep quiet or i n punch your head." Tbe vociferous party doubted the speaker's ability or chartered right to go about as a "head puncher," and Invited an experiment. The invitation Was promptly accepted. From a score of semi-Americanized Teutons arose shouts of "fight, fight." The im mense audience down below, unable to see the head-punchiog process, which was going on vigorously, and mistaking the word "tlgbt" for "fire," was at once in the wildest commotion. Everybody at all conversant with the building knew what a vast flimsy shell It is, of the most combustible materials, and most inadequately provided with means of egress in case of fire. In an instant, the alarm of "fire" spread through the entire house, and the long, tortuous passages were blocked up by a screaming, struggling, terror-stricken crowd, fighting its way towards tho street, while the aisles were filled with a multitude pressing towards tho doors.and many were boundiDgover the seats, hastening to effect their escape from what seemed to them at -he moment an immi nent danger of the aost horrible of deaths. To the cool presence of mind of the persons upon the stage It is without doubt due that there were not many trampled to death in the frenzied rush for tbe door. In the excitement several women fainted, and it was reported that one girl had her arm broken. That no more serious injuries or even loss of life resulted mast be regarded as not only fortunate, but wonderful, In view of the circum stances JV. Y. World, yesterday. MAKING SURE OF A TENOR. Profestl.nal Rivalry d Maaacerial Dlplo niacv. , me ciruuu juurjamtv icuo mus amusing story: A French impressario was taking out to New Orleans an opera company, which, by special agreement, was only to Include one tenor. Fo reigners are usually bad sailors, and for the first few days all the members of the company were seasick, one of the effects of which malady is that it weak ens' the voice so much that people are frequently hoarse for several days after their recovery. Accordingly, as soon as the singers could crawl on deck, they commenced to try their voices, and amongst them the tenor, who, always anxious to occupy a distinguished posi tion, went on to the bridge of the steamer for the purpose. What was his surprise on hearing the echo of his own voice another tenor. His amazement became disgust when he heard a third tenor running up the scale, ar fourth, a fifth. He.. looked forward, and saw two men eyeing him and each other with intense hatred; he looked aft, and saw two others similarly oc cupied. The five tenors simultaneously made a rush belew to tbe manager's cabin, and de manded.wbetber he had not expressly stipulated to each of them that he was to be his only tenor. - a &uqvta m.uim, v i -1 ion mq manager; ttUU 1 will keep my word. You see, none of vou have , been 4o -New Orleans before, or you would un derstandr When , we arrive there, the yellow . fever Js.sure to be raging, and as you are fresh from Europe, two of you will probably be cor- ried off before yu land, and two more daring the rehearsal, one win probably survive; he will be lay first and only tenor." A correspondent of the Boston Journal counts np an appalling list of twenty-five earth quakes by which portions of our globe have been agitated during tbe past two years, and fearing that we have not yet reached tbe end of the earthquake term, longs unavailingly for a prophet's glance to read the f Jture aright.
