TIIE DAILY EVENING TELEGK APil PHI L A.D E LPfll A. MONDAY, iTEBRUARY 27, 1871. 5 Th CIIT Aniinaialii At thi Chbsnct Massinxer's play of A New Way to Pay Old Dehls, with Mr. Davenport ai "Sir Giles Overreach," will bo performed this evening, to-morrow, and on Wednesday. The "Sir Giles" of Mr. Davenpart created a decided sensation last week, and it has been pronounced by all who have seen It as one of the most pow erful pieces of acting ever seen in modern times in this city. The characfr of "Sir Olles" is portrayed In strong colors by the dramatist, who, if report be true, took this method of revenging himself upon one who had Injured him; and It has, from the opportunities It affords for rigorous acting, ever been a favorite with euch tragedians as Garrlck, Kean, the elder Booth, the yonnger Booth, and Mr. E. L. Daven port. This last nameJ artist certainly has no living-rival In the part, and bis performance is wonderful for the case and naturalness with which ho produces the most powerful effects. As a picture of Intense ma lignity, unscrupulous audition, and a cunning that is at once mean and audacious, the "Sir Giles Ovtrreach" of Mr.( Davenport is unsur passed. Whether the dramatist Intended It or not, Mr. Davenport distinctly represents "Sir Giles" as a monomaniac; there are evidences of madness, but madness with a distinct method la It, from the first scene of the play, and the last scene, where all the dee -laid plans of the usurer come to nothing, is a fearful exhibition of a mental and physical wreck. This is a great piece of tragic acting, which no person who has any appreciation of high dramatic art should Omit seeing. A AV?p Way to Pay Old Dehls Is not In every reaped the let of Massinger's plays, although it Is the only one which has kept permanent possession of the stage, principally on account of the character of "Sir Giles Overreach." Ills City Madam, as a play, is in our opinion, supe rior to A Kern Way to Pay OH Debts, and the character of "Luke" in it is, if not so powerful, a more artistic because finer portraiture than "Sir Giles." This part was occasionally played by Kean and the elder Booth, but so far as we are aware, it has not been attempted by any actor of the present day. Since the public have shown such an appreciation for the standard drama as represented at the Chesnut, and espe cially for the "Sir Giles Overreach" of Mr. Dav enport, would It not be worrt while to revive this other fine comedy of Masai nger's, especially as the part of "Luke" Is one that will give our greatest tragic actor some magnificent oppor tunities? At th Walnut Mr. and Mrs. Barney Williams will commence a tare well engagement this even ing previous to their departure for Europe. The drama of The Fairy Circle; or, Con O'Carolan's Dream, the comedy of The Custom of the Country, and the comedietta of Who Speaks First will be represented. At tdk Arch Lotta will commence an en gagement this evening, when she will represent half a dozen characters in John Brougham's drama ot The J.iitte Detective. At Concert Hall concerts will be given this evening, to-morrow, and on Wednesday, In which the child violinist, Americas, will appear, supported by M'lle Rossetti, M'lle Frlda de Ge bele, Mr. Wilbelnt Lotti, Mr. Albert Laurence, Slgnora Jedsca, Mr. Harry Sanderson, and Mr. William Appy. At the Museum. Ninth and Arch streets, the drama of The Ticke'of-Leaue-Man will be represented this evening. At the American a variety of novelties will be presented this evening. At the A88kmblt Building the two-headed girl, the Kentucky giant, and the Nova Scotia giantess will remain on exhibition during the present week. The German Opera. A season of German opera of seven nights and two matinees will commence on Friday evening next at the Acade my of Music.
