THE DAILY EVENING TELEGR A PR PTIIL .11) E LP ft! AJ FIUDAT, EnitlUTlT 17, 1871. ANOTHER "CURLEY" HARRIS. A Pnaphla CaaiitT HH Rivals Ilia Philn. lltil t'ammde la Kcaerr o Itecklesa The Harrlsburir Nart Journal of yesterday av: The wonderful feat performed by "Curley Harris," in leaping from a train while In motion, has found Its prototype In Dauphin county. John Hoover, from Lykens valley, was arretted at the Instance of a woman residing. In his nelgu hood for an indiscretion punishable by imprison ment In the county jail. While being brought over the Northern Central Railroad to this city, In custody of the constable of Millereburg, he asked and obtained permission to visit the "saloon" at the end of the car, and was tem porarily relieved of bis handcuff. The train was a few miles north of the city, going at the rate of about 150 miles per hour. Watching his opportunity, be suddenly sprang out of the door npon the platform, and from thence leaped to tbe ground. The constable Immediately started in pHrsuit, but was stopped at the door by a brother of the prisoner, who had evidently been in col In? ion with the escape. The door was soon opened, and the constable also leaped from the train, sustaining slight bruises. Ills bird, however, had flown, and no clue was obtained 9t UMICAL AKI imtniTic. Tbe Mecoad Thinn Caocert. The second concert of the present series by Thomas' orchestra was given last evening in the presence of the largest audience that hag yet greeted this popular organization In Philadel phia. The orchestra were in fine condition, and gave the several selections in their best manner. Jirst on tlie programme was the well-known "Hebrides" (Ficcai's cave) overture of Mendels sohn. Ftd'owing it came tbe adagio from Beet hoven's "Prometheus" music, repeated from a former concert. Weber's concertstuek for piano, li. three movements, was played by Miss Anna Menlig in such a manner as to draw forth the moof hearty applause. Beethoven's Heptett, Op. 20. the original for two violins, cello, clarionet, bassoon, and horn, was played entire v the full reed and string orchestral The difficult first violin solo part was rendered in the most deli cate manner by the ten unison violins; and the Hunts and shades, tbe phrasing, and the execu tion were given with as much effect as if one soloist only was performing according to his own individual judgment. Probably the most effective performance of the evening was the "Semiramide" overture of Kossini, which was the more pleasing on ac count of its great familiarity, but which was hardly recognizable in its perfected state, asgiven by thfs orchestra. Of the pianissimo effects the Schumann Trcrumercl was th? representative, and for the inevitable encore the Iiavdn "Sere nade" was played by the strings. Miss Mehlig ave Liszt's "Rhapsodie Ilongrolse," but de clined the honor of a recall, probably on account of the length of the programme. A set of waltzes, a Strauss mazourka and galop, and the No. 3 "Fackcltanz" of Meyerbeer completed tbe list. Tbe Stelnway grand piano used at the concert by Miss Mehlig gave general satisfaction to the audience and performer. ' It was constructed after the model of a new patent improvement made by one of the Stoinway Sons, and was furnished by Mr. Charles Blasius, No. 1000 Cues nut street. These pianos are used exclusively by Miss Mehlig in her concert tour with the Thomas orchestra. The Thomas concert organization will return to Philadelphia in a few weeks, when another season of two concerts will be given en the evenings of March 31 and April 1. On the first named evening the occasion will be the annual benefit of Mr. Alfred Stlmmel, the well-known doorkeeper of the Academy of Music. He did not believe In submitting to gnre in justice, and demanded as a national right, con sidered with regard to fisheries, that the three mile limit, counting from headland to headland, should be insisted upon.
