TJIK DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, THURSDAY, JANUARY" 12, 1S71. 5 INVESTING MONEY. The promptness with which the eovcn-thlrtv Kold bonds of the Northern Pacific Railroad are being taken up by Investors, is not surprising when we consider the substantial nature and perfect security of the Investment. The char acter and financial standing of the house of Jay Cooke A- Co. constitute one of the surest guar antees that the Investment is one of the safest and best that is now on the market. The lands with which this company has been endowed by the liberal policy of the nation, a policy which Increases vastly the value of the alternate sections reserved by the Government, are of themselves worii much more than the whole coBt of the road and Its equipment. The-e lands are in the finest grain-growing sections of the Northwest, and extend from the western boundary of Wisconsin through Minnesota, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington Terri tory to Fuget Sound. The cllf.iato on no part of the extended rout of this great road is colder than in Minnesota, the finest wheat State in the Union, while for two-thirds of the distance the temperature is as mild as that of Ohio. The most extensive arrangements have been per fected for the settlement of the country by im migration and colonization. Various colonies of several hundred families each are already forming in several of our Eastern and Middle States to move to the superb wheat lands of Minnesota and Dakotah, on the line of the Northern Pacific Koad. Two hundred and forty miles of this road, from Lake Superior at Du luth to the Red River of the North, are ap proaching completion. We htve said the land grant of the Northern Faciflc Road was sufficient to build and equip the whole road, and when we consider that this immense domain is greater by 10,000 square miles than the whole of New England, and that the territory is sufficient to make two States as large as Massachusetts, each of them with a soil and climate the equal of the best portions of ' Minnesota, and with all the resources of coal, timber, minerals, and never-failing water power, our statement seems far within the truth. This whole grant is within the parallels of latitude which in Europe and America embrace the most intelligent, active, and progressive populations. At short Intervals the route is crossed by large navigable streams, upon many of which commerce by steamboats haB long boon established. This road will form r. connecting link, over two thousand miles 2ong, between navigable waters in the United States, and will give a combined length of railway and river navigation of not less than four thousand miles, which will tie commercially and financially subsidiary to this land graut. Coal, lignite, and wood are found in abundance in the coun try througa which the road passes. The mildness of the climate of the North western belt of States, astonishing as it may seem, is nevertheless true, and abundantly testi fied to by man and beast. The domestic cattle of Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Dakotah range out alt winter and are in good condition in March. Much of the line of this road passes through the winter homes of the buffalo and ante lope. Those animals are invariably in good condition, and never "spring poor." In no part of the world can larger crops be raised of wheat, barley, rye, oats, and potatoes than on the lands embraced within and adjacent to the grants of the Northern Pacific Railroad, and there are nowhere finer apples, pears, plums, and cherries than those grown on this route west of tho Rocky Mountains. This great region, when developed, as it will be in the immediate future, Is destined to become the great grain nnd meat producing section of the country. There is no richer field for young and enterprising men than this new Northwest, which, through the agency of th3 Northern Pacific Road, la bo soon to bo- come filled with an industrious and thrifty popu'ation. Ml S ICAIi AHI UUAM4T1C. "Faust" by the Herman Troupe. Counod's Faust, whatever it may be as a sci entific musical composition, has the great merit of being an admirable expression of the dra matic theme. The composer has preserved the peculiarly delicate flavor of the love passages of Goethe's poem, and the music of Faust, while it appeals directly to the popular taste, is sel dom unpoetical or commonplace. The opera has gained in the favor of the public ever since its first production, and there are few composi tions that can bo heard with more pleasure. The performance last evening at tho Academy of Music waJ very meritorious. Mad lie Rosettl, who sustained the role of "Marguerite," has a soprano voice of much purity and sweetness, and a dramatic style that made her rendering of some of the scenes highly effective. She ap peared to be somewhat timid at first, and the song of "The King of Thule" failed to excite much enthusiasm, while it made a favorable impression on the audience. Af terwards she became moro at her ease, and the whole of thje garden scene with "Faust"' was exceedingly well done. Throughout the balance of the opera Mad'lle Rosetti gained upon the regards of her audience both as an actress and a s'jger, and when the curtain fell upon the lst act she had achieved a very decided suc cess, and was deservedly complimented by a call before the curtain. Another new singer, Mr. Adolph Franosch, appeared" as "Mephla topheles," and made a very favorable impres sion. Mr. Habelmann as "Faust" acted and eang better than he has done for a long time. Mr. W. Formes made an excellent "Valentine." The role of "Siebel" has been more ably sus tained than it was by Miss Roe me r, although Bhe sang the music correctly and with expression. This lady's voice lacks both power and sweet ness, and she consequently failed to reach the standard of excellence that has been attained by other representatives of "Marguerite's" boy lover. Th CUT Aiuuseuienia At the Academy of Musio Mozart's opera of Don Giovanni will be performed this even ing, with Madame Llchtmay as "Donna Anna" and Carl Formes as "Lenorollo." At the Chesnut Mr. and Mrs. Florence will appear this eveuing In Domhey and IjpnAui The 1 ankee Housekeeper. At the Walnut the drama of The Great C ity will be represented this evening. At the Akch the play of Jiosedale is an nounced for this evening. At the Amateur Drawing-room, Seven teenth street, above Chesnut, Mr. Rufus Adams will have a complimentary benefit, when he will appears as "Shylock," In The Merchant of Venice, supported by his pupils. The perform ance will conclude with the farce of The Loan of a Lover. At the American Theatre a miscellaneous programme will be presented this evening. At thb Circus, Tenth and Callowhill streets, a fine equestrian and acrobatic performance will be riven this evening. At thb American Museum, Ninth and Arch streets, theextravagauaa of Fuss in Loots will be pel formed this evening. At tub Arch Sihebt Opera.
