At the first quarterly mooting of the Wo men's Christian Association, held yesterday afternoon, an address upon the work of the Women's Christian Association of Washing ton, for the encouragement of those engaged in the work in this city, was made by one of the Vice-Presidents of the association. A petition complaining of tho extortions of the Erie llailroad was yesterday presented in the New Jersey Legislature. -'A bill te make the reading of the Bible in public schools unlawful was voted down yesterday in the Ohio Legislature. The Democrats of New Hampshire held a State Convention at Concord yesterday, and placed James II. Western, of Manchester, in nomination for Governor. The State Treasury contest was closed yesterday through the election, by the Legis lature, of It. W. Mackey, Republican, over Daniel O. Barr, Democrat. The former gentleman received 70 votes and tholatterOO. In the United States District Court of New Yorkjj-esterday, Judge Blatchford decided that the libelled steamer Florida should be released, there being no evidence to show that she had been fitted up to cruise against a State with which our Government was at . peace. Tho greater portion of the time of the United States Senate was engrossed yesterday in the consideration of the San Domingo re solution. Spirited remarks were made by . Messrs. Schurz, Stewart, Yates, Wilson, and others. A nuziber of amendments were offered and defeated, and finally the House amendment, providing that the appointment of the commission shall not commit Congress for or against annexation, was concurred in unanimously. A bread riot and collisions between a mob and the military are reported as having occurred in Paris. There are rumors of a new movement, having for its object the restoration of Eu genie to the regency. English travellers bear testimony to the generous treatment accorded the French pri honers in Germany. Semi-official organs of Austria declare that the approaching conference must uphold the validity of the treaties. The Prussians claim to have gained a victory on the 8th inst. over Garibaldi, in the Department of Caledor. A Berlin despatch announces that Gene ral Manteuffel will be transferred to com mand the Army of the Vosges. The British Government is experiment ing now upon a new kind of gunpowder claimed to be of uncommon strength. The Belgian militia are again summoned to the frontier, and a staff of officers has already arrived at a point in the neighbor of Longwy. A despatch from Versailles reports that General Chanzy's army is retreating at all points, and that one thousand prisoners have already been taken by the Prussians. A battle was fought oa Monday near Eougement, Department of Doubs, resulting in a victory for the French. After the en gagement the victorious troops bivouacked on the field. HOUSE OF REFUGE. Yesterday afternoon the annual report of the contributors to the House of lief uge was submitted,, at the rooms of the board, No. 105 North Tenth street. In the absence of John J. Barclay, the President, John M. Ogden, the first Vice-President, assumed the chair, and Frederick Collins was selected as Secretary. The anuual reports were then submitted as follows: The report of the Board of Managers shows that on the 1st of January, 1870, there were in the white department, 410; in the cjlored department, 12;$; making a total of W.). The health of the inmates has, with few exceptions, been excellent. Not a single death occurred in the colored department, and only three in the white department. The report refers to thej aot of Assembly appropriating $50,000 to aid tho managers in the erection of the contemplatod new build ings, now nearly completod. The report gives a description of the pro gress of the work, and speaks in detail of the visit of Governor Geary to the House of lief uge recently. Statistics are given showing the scholastic attainments of those in the institution as well as of those discharged, many of whom could read and write well; some were study ing physiology and astronomy, and others ordinary English branches.
