TIIK DAILY KVEKING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, MONDAY, .JANUARY 2, 1S71. 5 fxiobi n&imissuRO. THE BCH AMBLE FOR THE OFFICES THE FOCRTH WARD COME TO GRIEF AHERN OVERBOARD THE OANO LIKELY TO TURN TIOUH THE TRHA Bt'RT CONTEST AND CAMERON PISTRACTINO THE RErtJBUOANS A GENERAL 8MASH PROBA BLE OEART IN RESERVE TO BREAK THE RINGS THE PROPOSED SENATORIAL CONTESTS TJN PROMISINO. From on Occasional Correspondent . Harkisburq, Jan. 1, 1870. Religious devotion has not been the rule here to-day amongst the law-givers of the Common wealth, and, judging from the knots of excited men to be seen on every hand, the confusion of tongues in all public places, and the anxious faces of members and their retainers, it Is uof unreasonable to presume that most of them for got their morning prayers as they rose lrom their uneasy couches. Yesterday was a busy day, but this holy day of rest has been u sort of political Donnybrook Fair, and sore heads are thick as falling leaves in autumn. Hitherto, for some years, the preliminary Struggles at the organization of the Legislature have been wholly on the Republican side, while the Democrats sat coolly by and enjoyed the wrangle with clever philosophy; but this year the political entanglement is knotty beyond precedent. The Democrats have the Senate, and power has brought them a world of trouble. Eleven men would be chief clerk; twenty-seven men would take the lesser clerkships; and for'tj uinc men at least would take the other olllces. Ahem would wield the mace in the Senate, and Bport the title and pocket the pay of Sergeant-at-Arms, whereupon the rural Democrats de mand less Democracy and a little more fl ivor of respectability. Ahem will therefore be bowled out, and loud and deep curses come up from the b'hoys of the gallant Fourth ward kingdom of the redoubtable Alderman. Tony Laws would bo assistant clerk, and might have had a good show had not a rogular John Rodgers family of the "gang" demanded legislative perquisites. Some opposition is developed to Wallace, but he will go through and take the chair of the Senate. Buck alow does not love him, but party neces sity will make the nineteen Democratic Sena tors appear to be harmonious. "Uncle Jake Zeigler"h on hand, looking as bcnignantlyupon both Democrats and Republicans as a young plrl with her first new bonnet. He will be elected, much to the disgust of Charley Carri gan, or any other man who wants the place. Charley made a desperate plunge, but ho was Bhort-winded, and fell early in the action. lie is classed as one of the political heavy-weights of the party, and is likely to get a good office in about forty years, if he is patient and faithful. Ahem Will probably give up raids upon the Legislature, and go home to run for President of the Young Men's Chribtlan Association. If he docs, Mully will back him and see George n. 8tuart and go any amount better that may bo necessary to win. If Tony Laws fails he will take charge of the Bedford Street Mission, with Sam Josephs as chaplain. Mully's bar-room will be turned into a daily union prayer-meeting, and the Fourth ward will be run as a general camp meeting for the next year. It Is estimated that one year of such probation will bring the 'gang" up to the Btandard required for clerking, pasting, and folding and makiag fires in the Senate. In the House the Republicans have their spe cial troubles. There is the Treasury ghost, worse than the ghost of Banquo: it won't down, and it takes the most hideous shapes, and hops in just when it is most not wanted. The Treasury ghost haunts everything and everybody in the House on the Republican side. Webb would be Speaker easily, but the Trea sury nightmare disturbs his dreams and frets it waking hours. The Clerkship and the iiinor offices are all dragged into the seething caldron of the Treasury complication. And, (as if every possible sorrow must bo crowded the Republican fold just now, there is "Cameron plied upon it a dying, festering, poli tical carcass, with just life enough to fling the stench of his rottenness into every Republican face. He wants the Treasury, because it has a million in it of surplus money, and he comes in like a bull in a china shop, and threatens to smash any amount of Republican crockery. It looked for a while last evening and to-day as if Cameron and the Treasury might prove too much of a load for the Republicans, and that their cower would be destroyed even iu the organi Mr. Reinoehl, of Lancaster, has been roposcd as an anti-ring candidate for Speaker, aud there are quite enough of Republicans to join the Democrats to elect him, if it shall be necessary to brain the Cameron ring at the start; but to-night it looks as if harmony may be restored and the Republican organization carried through in the House. If this be done, there will be a surrender of the ring, and the Treasury will go to Borne acceptable man. Irwin is stronger now than last year in the Re publican ranks, and Taggart has also positive strength of considerable proportions, while Mackey could command the caucus, but is not safe for election. It Is a terribly mixed kettle of fish, and the candidates for the offices of the House would be glad if the State had no Trea sury to distract the political currents. All agree that the Constitutional Convention must destroy this bone of contention by making the Treasurer elective by the people, aud placing the public funds beyond the reach of speculators. I could give you more speculations to-night than a page of your paper would accommodate but cui bono f Just as fast as a slate is cleverly made up it is as cleverly smashed, and so we go from hour to hour until there is no rest for the weary, perspiring army of candidates. Mackey is calm, but anxious aud vigilant, Quay Is philosophical and tireless, Irwin is jolly and confident, and Don Cameron nervous and at bay. He is bold in purpose, versatile in inven tion, and desperate in execution. He will lose no tricks within his reach, and don't care if the whole machine is broken into fragments if he can't run it his way. But the Legis lature is aga net him, and great results are expected by those who are opposed to him. He cannot debauch the majority, and must outgcueral them to gain Lis points. If he does bo at the BUrt, the reac tion and retaliation will only be the more ter rible when the strategy develops. Indeed, It eeems probable that, go as it m:iy, Republican distraction in the Legislature must come. If Cameron gets the reins there will be a break; if he don't get the reins, his faction will kick up and upset the eoach. Promising, is it not ? I eaw Governor Geary last evening. He is serene as a summer morning, and self-poised and complacent amidst the jarring elements around him. He commands the reserve against the rlDgs, and will bring his force into action in gallant t) ie should the tide of battle seem to turn in favor of the corruplloni&ts. He wishes that reform, thorough, substantial, and lasting reform, thall win, and he will give it victory. The proposition to contest the scats of Sena tors Decliert, Naglo, nnd Randall meets with no favor among lending Republican Senators. It is regarded as an effort of petty office-hunters to commit the Republican party to a great public wrong for the benefit of a few men who have the Icust possible claims upon the organization. The prominent Republican Senators have discussod the matter freely, ond have taken occasion to avow their dipgust fiQsuch attempts to reach power by defy Ing the vote of the people. Republican Senators feel that the precedents established by tbo party already In contesting seats are quite violent enough to enable a Democratic legisla ture to commit almost any wrong that mere party Interests might demand, and they will set themeelves sternly ogalnst any further violent attempt to put men into office who were not elected.
