THE DAILY EVENING TflLBQRAPH-t-PHlLAPflLPilLA, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 20, 1870 MtTNICAIj AII IltM VTIC. 'IteinM'nnl Juliet" nt lh Clif.nnt. Romeo and Juliet is not merely rii Ira passioned love poem, but it is one of the most perfectly con structed plays in the whole theatre of Shakespeare. The action p'ogresses without a Jar or break to its legitimate climax, and simply as a piece of stage effect the tragedy is a model of Its kind. In the Whole raoRe of erotic literature there Is nothing to eurpas?, in grace, tenderness, and beauty, the bal cony scene in the second act and the chamber Bcene In the third act, and to fee Mrs. Scott-Siddons act In these two scenes Is to see such an approxi mation to the ideal "Juliet" as does not occur upon the ataira often in a single lifetime. The merits or Mrs, Sid Jons' performance last night at the Ches nut met with cordial recognition, and In all the earlier scenes of the play she was so perfectly charming that a te'ererce to tier faults of style would almost seem to be nypercritlolstn. The balcony scene, especially, was acted in such a manner as to do full Justice to the lovely poetry, and we can pay Mrs. Siddons no greater compliment than to say that In this and In nil the purely sentimental passages her "Juliet" is a performance that no actress with whom we are ac quainted, uniess it be Madame Soebach, can ap. proach. Mrs. Siddons, however, cannot adequately express tragic emotions, and consequently in some of the nirst Impressive, if not the most beautiful, scenes we a'most lose sight of "Juliet," and only behold a very pretty actress ranting terribly at times, and straggling energetically with a task too heavy for her. With all Its faults, however, the "Juliet" of Mrs. Siddons Is a performance to be seen and admired, and we sincerely hope she will repeat It for the beneflt of those who were unable to attend last evening on account of the storm. It Is not of:cn that siulents of Shakespeare will be able to witness so near an approach to the Ideal "Juliet." Mr. Charles Ttiorne gives a straightforward, spirited, and intelligent personation of "Romeo." If not up to the very highest mark of excellence It is very much above the average, and as a Shake spearian performance it la superior to Mr. Thome's "Orlando" In As You Like It, Mr. Davenport Is one cf the few actors who can play the part of "Mer cnt!o" as ft ought to be played, and ho fully realizes all the airy grace and high animal spirits of this gen tlemanly fire-eater. Mrs. Sedley Brown, who made her first appearance last evening, represented the Nurse" in excellent style, and most or the other characters were creditably sustained. Dir. Booth as "Sir Kdwnrd Mortimer" and "Benedick." The audience at the Walnut last evening had an opportunity to take the measure of Mr. Booth's talents with considerable exactness, for they saw him at his best and at his worst. Colman's play of The Iron Cheat is a dramatization from Godwin's novel or "Caleb Williams," or rather it Is the leading idea or the novel worked np afresh in a dramatic form. It is an admirable piece or Its kind, and the character er "Sir Edward Mortimer" Is one that affords a capable actor Borne great opportuni ties. Mr. Booth does not play this role ns often as he does some others, but It is one of his very best, and he acted It last night in suc h a manner as to create a most profound impression upon the audience. The con trast between Mr. Booth's "Sir Edward Mortimer" and hla "Benedick" in Much Ado About Xothinrj is almost ludicrous. As a work of art we are umble to see any merit whatever in the latter, and it is much the worst of Mr. Booth's attempts In the line of comedy. In fact, Mr. Booth has no comio talent whatever, and his "Don Cnosar de Bazan" and his Tctrnchio" are only not failures because they arc acted with a certain dash and spirit that may pacs lor humor, but of real humor there is not the faintest trace. We do not understand why Mr. Booth plays "Benedick," unless to show what he cannot do. If this Is his object he certainly succeeds, for his "Benedick" is not Shakesperlan or anything like It. The Vltr Amusements. At the Chesnut As Von Like It will be represented Ihls evening with Mrs. Seott-Siddons as "Rosailnd" and Mr. E. L. Davenport as "Jacques." At the Akch Across the Continent will be performed thlseveninpr. At TnR Wii NfT Mr. Booth will appear this even ing as "Shyloc k," In The Merchant of Venice, and as Don Ca'sar de Bazan."
