THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 1, 1870. 5 muhical, Ann im iniTic. Irlad'll MUmi. The audience at the Academy of Music last evening was not as largo as theme which greeted Mad'llo Nilsson on her first appearance la this city, but It made np In enthusiasm what It lacked In numbers, and it wasevldcnt that other causes than lack of appreciation prevented the house from being crowded. Many persons will pay large prices on the advent of a celebrated Binder merely for the sake of gratifying cu riosity, but it Is Impossible that such a furore as was created by Mad'lle Nilsson'a first con certs could be revived in behalf of the same style of entertainment. Concerts are only partially satisfactory at the best, and the majority of those who have already heard Mad'lle Nilason are more particularly desirous of hearing her ajraln, not in a few disconnected airs, but In a conse cutive work that will enable her to give a fuller exhibition of her powers than she can possibly do In a mere concert programme. The Interest of the present series of performances thus far centres in Handel's oratorio of The Messiah, which will undoubtedly attract an overflowing audience, and If Mad'llo Nlliaon comes up to the expectations that havo been formed with regard to her, a large attendance can always be counted upon whenever she shall 'appear lu oratorio or opera, provided the prices of admis sion are kept within reasonable limits. Last evening Mad'llo Nils9n's blngtng of "Una voce iioca fa" from the Barber Seville, of the 'Vata Div" from Purina, and the "Bluet" waltz by Cohen, were heartily enjoyed bytbesi In attendance, and were liberally ap plauded. For encores Mad'llo Nilason sang a Swedish air and "Old Folks at Home." There has been somo ill-natured criticism with regard to the introduction of thisj nolody, which we do not think is deserved. The air is a very beauti ful one, without a traco of vulgarity; and its very simplicity is one of its greatest charms. Mad'lle Niissan shows excellent taste by giving it, and the- touchingly beautiful manner In which she expresses the pathos of the words as well as of the melody gives more real pleasure to a very largo number of really intelligent people than does her singing of more difHcu.lt and ornate compositions. Mies Cary, Mr. Vieuxtcmps, Slgnor Brignoli, and Signor Verger performed their parts la the programme last evening in a satisfactory manner. Ferhaps the most interesting feature of the performance, not excepting the sluging of Mad'lle Nilason, was the appearance of Mad'lle Marie Krebs, a young pianist who made a most decided impression upon the audience as an artist of rare attainments. Mad'lle Krebs la young and of prepossessing appearanco, and her playing indicated a very high degree of culture. It is not too much to say that she is one of the finest pianists who have appeared in this city. She has complete command over her instrument, and understands its capabilities thoroughly. Iler touch is crisp and firm and her execution brilliant, and at the same time characterized by all the solid qualities that to the best musical culture are of more impor tance than mere brilliancy. Her playing last night made a most favorable impression, al though she, rather unfortuuately, did not appear until almost the close of the entertainment, and she at once took a high rank in the estima tion ef the best judges present as a pianist of extraordinary abilities. Mad'lle Krebs was In some degree indebted forlicr success to the piano upon which she performed. This was a "concert grand," of Btelnway's make, which was brought on from New York expressly for this concert, and it was remarkable for the purity, sweetness, and brilliancy of its tones. With such a noble Instrument Mad'lle Krebs had every opportunity to display the finer qualities of her art to the very rest advantage. The CUT Amunemenia.
