The census of tbe six New England States Is complete. We have already published the re turns for Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. Those of the three other States are given below. The Ppa1atla of Maine. Ince the census of 17(.K), has been as follows: I'M'. lpula'(nn, tncreiutr, Vr Cent. 10 96.M0 .... .... 1S00 1ftl,71 55,179 5T-10 1810 CM, 705 76,S1 M)-7i 1820 29S.B33 C,f.t0 - 1830 899,455 101,10 8VR 501,793 Wi,X19 85-64 V50 5S3.1B9 81,376 16 82 023,979 45,U0 J-74 1S70 630,42 8,149 '84 Of the sixteen counties Into which the State is dirldcd, five onlj show an increase, while in eleven there has been a decrease since 1800. The ship-building counties, excepting Aroos took, show the largest decrease, the agricultural counties coming next, while the largest increase is shown in manufacturing localities. The thriving period of Maine, as far as population Is i i ' i i i . cuucuruou, wus m iuu cany pari, oi me century, when It received a large immigration from the older New England ..Slates. Its percentage of growth has steadily decreased until it now barely exceeds one-third of one per cent, in a decade. The State will lose at least one Con gressman, unless the whole number of members is increased under the new apportionment. There will also be a considerable readjustment of the political power of the different counties in the Legislature. The Population nl New Hampshire has undergone the following changes since 1790: Yrnr. Iplninn. Inrrta'. I'cr crnt. 1790 141,899 .... .... 181)0 I'M, 702 41,Nii3 29-50 1310 vi4,360 :m,r..H 16-05 1S20 244,1111 29,801 13-90 1HT0 8iM,829 25.1S7 10-81 1840 2S4 614 18.248 5-C4 1850 317,970 83,402 11-74 .HfiO...., 820,073 8.097 8 55 1S70 818,800 (Dec.) 7,773 (Dac.) 8-39 Previous to 18(0, no State in the Union had shown a decrease in population at the decennial enumerations, and Now Hampshire is probably the only one which can now claim this retro grade honor. It is possible that an imperfect enumeration has had something to do with it, however. The Population of Vermont has exhibited the following fluctuations since 1?.K): lrir. lt,p. Increase. Per tent. 1790 85,416 1800 154,465 69,049 80-84 1810 217,713 C3.24S 4095 1S20 235,704 19,051 8-29 18i!0 280,652 44,899 19t)4 1840 291,949 11,2'. 402 1850 814,120 22,172 7B9 I860 815,099 879 31 1870 330,235 15,137 4 81 Vermont, it will be seen, had almost come to a Btand still between 1850 and 18G0, exhibiting during that period the smallest percentage of increase of any State in the Union, the States that came next in order being New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Maine, It has now taken a fresh start, and may hope to hold its own hereafter, through the development of Us man ufacturing interests. The Mis New England State. The comparative population of the six New England States in 1800 and 1870 Is shown in the table given below. Later returns from Massa chusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut have slightly modified the totals in these Stales since we gave the details: 1800. 1870. Ine. rcr et.
