TOB i)AlLfi OCTOBEIl' 15,: 1870. musical. Ann imviiATic. M'lle NlMftaa's ! CeneerU The second appearance of M'lle NUsson at the Academy of Music was greeted last evening by an ven larger audience than on Wednesday, and the favorable verdict, then given by her hearers was fully confirmed. The great feature of tne performance last evening was tne "mad scene," from Anibrols'e Thomas' UamM, and although the selection was one, entirely nnsulted to the concert-room, It was ac cepted by tbe audience for what it was Intended as affording an opportunity for the singer to display her abilities in purely dramatic music The In troduction of such & scene as that from Ham. Irt Into a concert programme Is, however, almost painfully unsatisfactory, and It Is sincerely to be hoped that Mile Nilsson before she leaves the country will have opportunities to appear In Ophelia," "Mlgnon," "Desdemona," Margaerlte," and other of her leading rota. Messrs. Verger, Brlgnoll, Vlenxtemps and Miss Carey performed their parts In the entertainment last evening in such a manner as to secure generous applause. The (tier AmuKcmnnta. The water supply In the coal region has at length been Increased by the late rams, and those collieries which were compelled to be idle on account of a short supply of water are now again running on full time. Tlits would tend to Increase the production, were it not that the present rates of ooal will not allow the working of tbe more expensive mines to any extent, and lu the end may compel their entire stoppage. Tnua the supply is kept within the actual demands of the trade. The market is unchanged in quotations, though there Is a tendency to lower rates from lack of de mand. Coastwise freights are somewhat lower on account of the good supply of vessels and barges at the port, more, lu fact, than are needed at present. With regard to the legislation of Congress on coal EB raw material, the Miner's Journal of last week makes a good point. A breaker is now being erected for tbe Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Rail road atone of their collieries near Scranton, which is very large and complete in every particular. The coBt of the structure when completed will be not less than f lioo.ooo, and perhaps more. This breaker, which prepares C'tal for market after it Is mined by manipulation which is equiva lent to manufacture, and by means of machinery which is just as expensive as aay in use in any de partment of industry, will cost when completed more than any furnace, and more than many roil ing, cotton, or woollen mills. Yet the product from furnaces, cotton, woollen, and rolling mills Is by the law-makers regarded as a manufactured article, while the product of a more expensive breaker, requiring luore labor In Its nrepara ion, is regarded as a raw material, and the legislation Is governed accordingly. 1 here are many breakers in the Schuylkill regon iiabvIw o a o.tui ,.ln tt a ttila nun an.1 III. n n ajtl.in ( a A' HI I J Iva akuo4, ska tu.o uuvj BUil tiuo iiuvauuu la asked whether an article that requires such great .repartition by breaking, sorting, aud cleaning from luinurltlt s before it can be sent Into the market, can lastly be regard eu as raw, after it has been through these procetsea and Is fit for sale.
