THE DAILY EVENING TELEORAPH PHILADELPHIA, THURSDAY, AUGUST. 25, 1870. Frvm Oct Oirn Correspondent. Nw York, Au. 21, 1370. Tha New n.tel. Of course you haTe heard of oar new Jiotol. Yoa know (hat its name is the Grand Central, that its value, including the cost of the ground, the furniture, and the building of it, is two million dollar?, that It is ten stories high, and will ac commodate fifteen hundred people. It was opened to-day, and the scale of terms has been fixed r.t three, three-and-a-half, and four dollais per day. I'pon 6uch occasions as the opening of a big house like this, venerable newspaper custom requires that the local department of the respective metropolitan journals should blossom with congrnt illations. Setting compliments aside, however, I have but little doubt that the new hotel is very well worth the patronage which it will receive, and which it has begun to receive already. Its influence has already been felt by the proprietors of other hotels. The dally charge at the Metro politan Hotel, for instance, was, some weeks ago, put down to four dollars. A corresponding deduction went into effect at the Astor House last Monday week. There Is going to be a superb inaugural dinner to-morrow night. Of course we all know what these Inaugural din ners mean. Every newspaper man who gets an invitation is expected to pay therefor by i1more than paragraphic puffery. So far as I know end believe, however, the Grand Central deserve? most of the good things that will pro 1 ab'.v be paid of it. If size Is a claim to merit, its claim is lew disputable than that of any other hotel in New York. It Is built of four million bricks, has about twenty thousand gal lons of water in tanks, contains fire thousand 'chairp, aod nearly seven hundred rooms. It is carpeted with eeven acres of carpet, and mir rors, lace, and damask are "slung around' with an extravagant audacity that causes the country cousin to breathe hard. The Theatre. The Improvements which Mr. Daly has made and is making at the Fifth Avenue Theatre will render it as perfect in Its way as Booth's Theatre is In its. All the United States knows by this time that Daly's little theatre Is a pocket edition of the dramatic temple. It will hold scarcely a thousand people, but the lessee and manager is determined that these thousand chall be provided with as many means of luxury as the patrons of any other theatre in the city are. Ills compaiy will consist of Agnes Ethel, Fanny Davenport, Fanny Morant, Mrs. Gilbert, Kate Newton, lone Burke, aud Messrs. Ilarkins, Polk, Davidge, Parkes, Ba.-oomb (formerly of the old Walnut Street Thee-tre, Philadelphia), and Holland. Mr. Holland maybe termed Honorary member, for he v 111 probably not make one appearance daring the entire season, and the mere fact of nis engsgemeut speaks very well for Mr. Daly's goodness of heart. The season will open with Man and "Wife, and progress with the reproduction otFron-Frou and Fern a nde, and the Introduction of adaptations of La rrincesse George. L' Amour ! la Branche, Les Cris fJe Cotiri, and Fricoehe and Cacolet. The last one is by Yictorien Sardou. One of Moliere's last comedies in also to be revived. Oakey Hall and Mr. Daly hm likewise been working together on Sheridan's fragment entitled Affectation, and have raided upon it a superstructure In which Newport and the yachting season are made to figure. One very singular addition has been made to the orchestra. It consists of a very handsome water-hydrant, which appears beside the con ductor's seat in full sight of the audience, and In case of fire, is calculated to give the public assurance of safety. Six large Parisian private botes have been built (it the extreme rear of the orchestra another new and very agreeable fea ture, and one that will commend itself, in the Winter, to the theatre parties that are becoming eo fashionable. Driven Is Do It. "Sad C-ise of Suicide" is the favorite head- ing of local paragraphs which describe the crime k-rl taking one's life. Was there ever a case of suicide that was not sad ? I wander. There are degrees of sadness, of course, and one of the most mournful I ever heard of came nnder my notice to fay. It has relation to a I man named George Au, who, with a wife and four children, lived on the third floor of a tene Lmeat bouse in Ludlow street. About eighteen mouths ago Au suddenly became aware of the fact that be was a consumptive. The discovery Lpreyed so upon his mind that be took to drink, and from being sober and indnstrions he be i J came dissipated and idle. This sad change, of ' course, stui iurtner injured nis health. Bo wide !. and deep grew the ruin that in time he be ,'. came incapable of work, and bad to be sap- tJvaAl ltv t-ifa ui1tA lef lAn c A Vt a Trf nrm n had to work very hard, and the fact that she VJ was obliged to do so weighed still more heavily 1 upon Au's tuiud. He began to talk about suicide, j.but his wandering remarks were regarded merely Y the ineauiuzless threats of a morbid and un I strung mind. Late in the afternoon of Tnes 1 day, however, he went up stairs to their com Vnon room, called his wife and children aronnd . Jhlm, aud, shaking each by the hand, deliberately ribade them farewell. How his wife, knowing 1 that he had often threatened suicide, could have j permitted him to proceed so far without calling I for help, I cannot explain. It is one of the in I explicable things that any one would say could 1 A - . 1 . I- I V . . I J , noi uappeu. uui wuicu cuu&;Huuy uo uappen. His farewells spoken, he proceeded, in full view of hi wi ic and children, to a cupboard at one tide of the room, and took from one of the shelves a loaded pistol. At this point, Indeed, his wife run to the door and shrieked for assist ance. The effort was too late. Before her screams rescued those they had been meant to summon, the fatal shot had been fired, and her I husband (ell heavily back into the cupboard, a corpfe. An) thing so full of calm despair on I his part aud criminal irresoluteness on hers, I have not heard of for many a day. Am Baba. Ml Mt I. AND 1H ASIATIC.
