THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH P1I1L ADflLt PHI A, THURSDAY, JULY 7, 1870. 5 W 13 W-Y ORg Z 8 ZVX B. fVotn Our Own Correspondent, New York, Jalv 7, 1870. The Hatha. The two public baths In operation hnve met BO far with complete success the womon's no less than the men's. At first it was feared that respectable rrlrla and women would not patron- 1 ze them, but the event has proved this fear to be without good enough foundation. The baths arc open for fomlnines from six in the morning till nine in the evening, and between these hours, though mostly between six and nine ftt night, all ages of the tender sex may be seen wending their way along Fourteenth street to North river and along Fifth street to East. Nearly every girl and woman carries a small bundle which, it is fair to suppose, contains a towel, a bathing-dress, a cake of soap, and per haps, in some cases, a hand-brush. These pub lic baths have not yet been made the theme of any lecture from a strong-minded woman, but will probably come under the ban or under the blessing before long. I have not yot seen the audacious re porter so bold as to affirm that he has witnessed the sports of any of these nymphs in the water, although the indecorousness of his doln-r so would not he very great, since they all wear bathing-dresses and are Bald to conduct them selves in an extremely quiet and inoffensive manner. This I can venture to say, however tbat the bathing-dresses arc not by any means those elaborate articles of the toilette which fashionable women wear at watering-places. In most instances it consists merely of a common calico gown, and even sometimes of a night dress, not uullKe what Mr. Ilarry Beckett used to wear in the character of "Amina" in the bur lesque of La Sonnambula. Madame Lnnner'a Troupe. The "Viennolse" ballet troupe of Madame Lanncr is to make its first appearance in this city next Monday evening at the Grand Opera House. In order that there need be no misap prehension as to the material of which the figurantes and coryphees consist, I may men tion that only a few of the troupe the principal dancers are Viennoise, and that the others are all English, which accounts for their ruddy com plexions and blonde hair. Madame Lanner her self is of course a foreigner. So is Bertha Lind. The others came from bonny London, according to their own account, and created great havoc among the hearts of Fiak's clerks the other altcrnoon by going into the offices on the first floor of the Erie Opera IIouso to get some gold pieces changed into greenbacks. The entertainment they give retains the best excel lences of the ballot and the pantomime. It will not present as good scenery or as superb dancing as The Black Crook, or as ininy amus ing features as Mr. Fox manages to d into his Olympic pantomimes, but all tue depart ments In it will be blended in one harmonious tone, tbnn which nothing better, it is promised, has ever ret been seen in this city. The French Wrestlers. The French wrestlers at Wood's Museum have created as great an excitement as could probably be created by anything of the kind this warm weather. There Is a very remarkable female among them called Mdllo. Angela which is rather a soft, sweet-sounding title for so mascu line looking an artist. She it is who does the strong business, such as whirling around upon her shoulders a bar at each end of which is sus pended a good-sized man. Wood's Museum has not imported these attractions before it became time. What with the sticks upon the stage and the smell of animals in the menagerie portion of the house, the tout ensemble was anything but attractive. Chinese Help and Irlnh Hindrance!. Upon calling, a day or two ago, at the house of a friend,' the door was opened by a mite of a body, with complexion like a sheet of brown wrappins-paper, hair like an Indian's, and eyes like beads set obliquely in its head. It was a Chinese dwarf, at sight of whom the whole truth flashed before me. Mrs. Jones had taken the revenge she liad long been plotting against her Irish hindrance a specimen of the geiferic Biddy and taken into her service this Chinese help. I had not had to ring a second time. The bell had not ceased tinkling before John stood before me, in his shirt sleeves, it Is true, but with a broad, long, clean apron on, Mongolian intelligence beaming out of his stubbly nose, and Celestial complaisance scintillating from the corners of his almond-shaped eyes. His face was a mass of furrows, like the kernel of a pecan nut. and the sweat of honest labor be dewed a chin and cheeks destitute of beard. In the touching confidence which the lady of the house reposed in me during, the inter view tbat followed, I learned that this creature was a household angel in disguise, as far superior to the conventional Biddy as turtle-doves are to turtle-soup. The gentle creature when she engaged him was totally indifferent as to whether there were stationary tubs or not; asked no questions with regard to the condition of the range; evinced no curiosity as to the number composing the family; had no cousins or followers; did not stipulate for every Euuday out; never sat up to read novels, and did not frown when lie learned that the dining-room was back of the parlor and not in the basement. "God bless Mr. Koopmanschoop!" she exclaimed, under the impression that that worthy was alone responsible for the measure of Chinese help as yet introduced into the city. "I think that our time of deliverance has come." And since so much is now being said in public respecting the moral calibre and mental charac teristics of the Chinese, I thought it not out of place to add this mite with respect to his capaci ties as a domestic servant. If the jog-trot slaves of precedent and routine who nourished a century ago could now revisit the Bcenes of their former labors, how completely they wouia be taken aback by the wholesome Innova tions which modern skill, knowledge, and enterprise nave made upon their musty precepts and purblind practice i in medicine, especially, we have got en tirely out of the old worn-out grooves, and taken a new and more philosophical road to health. The German School of Medical Chemistry Is per haps the most progressive and successful. The testimony In relation to the ton in. whif.h cuuimus a stimulating element emitted in the Bit ters, is equally Satisfactory. - Hooflano's German Tonic Was compounded for those not Inclined to extreme bitters, and is Intended for nse In cases when some alcoholic stimulant is required In connection with the Tonic properties of the Bitters. Baqh bottle of me ionic contains one Dottie or tne Bitters, com bined with pure Santa Cruz Run, and flavored in such a manner that the extreme bitterness of the Bitters is overcome, forming a preparation highly agreeable and pleasant to the palate, and containing the medicinal virtues of the Bitters. The price of the Tonic is roo per bottle, which many persons think too high.., They must take Into consideration that the stimulant nsed is guaranteed to be of a pure quality, a poor article could be furnished at a cheaper price, but is it not better to pay a little more and have a good article? A medicinal preparation should contain none but the best ingredients, and they who expect to obtain a cheap compound and be benefited will most certainly be deceived. Hoofland's Podophyllin Pill Is also highly extolled and pronounced to be the most efficient Cathartlo known to the Medical World. Being composed of the ACTIVE PRINCIPLE of Mandrake, in combination with other effective in gredients, they act more powerfully upon the Liver and Secretive Organs than any other Pills. Their operation is free from griping or nausea. Two Pills a Dose. It does not require a handful of them to produce the desired effect. From personal experience and otherwise, we have do hesitation In saying that, taken In connection with the Bitters and Tonic, they will speedily cure the most severe and long-standing cases of Liver Complaints, Constipation, or any other derangements of the organs of digestion. The Pills will Purify the Blood, will thoroughly cleanse the Liver of all unhealthy Impurities, and relieve the Stomach and Bowels, while the Bitters or Tonic strengthens and adds new life to the entire system, enables the Stomach to digest the food, and transforms the sickly, emaciated, weak, and feeblo bod7 into one of health, strength, and vigor.
