low Hair," the Sioux Indians who have been
on a visit to the President, reached the Con
tinental Hole i. They were in charge of the
Indian Apeut and an interpreter, and, not
withstflmlinf tho lateness of the hour, quite
a crowd gathered in the hotel to note their
.if j-.enrHncp. The chief were in Indian cos
tume the traditional blanket, leggings, and
n ivcnsins but wore Roft felt hats, and car

ized and savnge dress producing a peculiar
pfi't ct. The Indians will remain to-day, and
then leave for New York.
John Gngucr, admitted to the Pennsyl
vania Hospital on the 'J'.Hh nit., from iujuries
received while getting off the cars at School

John 0"Dowd was admitted to the Hos
pital yesterday, seriously inj tired by falling
from a scaffold on Market street. Ha resided

A resolution was passed by the National
Typographical Convention, at Cincinnati,
yesterday, encouraging female compositors
to co operate with males whenever employed
together.
In their report on the indebtedness of
Southern railroads, the House Judiciary Com
mittee recommended the abandonment of the
pending suits with a view to. a compromise,
as suggested by the debtors.
A most gratifying increase in our ex
ports for the first three-quarters of the cur
rent fiscal year over the corresponding period
of last year, is shown by the monthly statisti
cal report just issued. Instead of a balance
of nearly sixty millions against us, there is
one of over two millions in our favor.
In the United States Senate yesterday,
after the close of our report, tho Apportion
ment and Franking bills were discussed. In
the House, Mr. Davis, of New York, reported
his naturalization bill, and after discussion it
vvaB tabled by a vote of 102 to i'r. Mr. Davis
moved a reconsideration, he having voted
affirmatively for that purpose. Mr. Judd
then moved to lay the motion to reconsider
on the table, pending which the House ad
journed. Foreign Affairs.
The insurrection at Lucca was an insig
nificant aff air and soon quelled.
Eugenie has sent ten thousand francs to
the eufferers by the Constantinople fire.
Pio Nono hasjwrittcn a letter in which ho
sustains, in pobitive terms, the dogma of in
fallibility. The brigands who recently captured a
party of Englishmen near Gibraltar have
been captured and made to disgorge a por
tion of the money paid as ransom for their
enptives.

to the bad condition of the streets along the line of
the North Pennsylvania Kailrsad. Referred.
The Chief Engineer and Surveyor sent in a com
munication asking for an additional assistant engi
neer. Referred.
Also, one was received from the Chief Engineer
of the Water Department, asking a special appro
priation of S-GuOO for the summer. An ordinance
was passed appropriating that amount.
A communication was received from the Register
of Wills, asking for additional olllce accommoda
tion. Referred.
Mr. Franciscus presented a communication from
the Board of Public Charities calling attention to
the want of accommodation at tho Philadelphia
almshouse for the insane, asking that Councils take
the most etl active measures to increase the accom
modations. Referred to the Juiut Committee on
J inance and Poor.
Mr. U. A. Smith presented a communication
from the Department of Port Wardens, asking for
a transfer of an appropriation and 100 additional
for furnishing their office. Referred.
Petitions were received and referred for the
opening of Fortieth street, and Irom the Union
Hose Company for an increase in appropriation.
Mr. llougdon, chairman of the Committee on
Water-works, presented a resolution for the laying
of water-pipe on Twenty-third and other streets.

The Committee on Law reported that there was
nothing in the act of Assembly, in regard to the
Kite of the public buildings, to forbid tho vacating
of streets and alleys. The Committee was dis
charged from further consideration of the subject.
An ordinance appropriasmg $150 to refund over
paid water-reuts was passed.
An ordinance to protect the Water Department
was postponed for one week.
Mr. Shoemaker, chairman of the Committee on
Law, reported an ordinance to pay Joseph W. Lewis
;"XK) lor onenine Chew street. Passed.
Also, one to pay W. W. Loughlin $100 for the loss

tie vote. It was afterward reconsidered and passed.
Mr. .1- M. liauui ureseuted a communication
from Miller & Smith, lessees of Cumberland street
wharf, asking that It be nued up. Referred to the
Hoard of Port Wardens.
Mr. Jones submitted a resolution ot request to the
Mayor for the return of the bill for extending the
tire alarm telegraph line to Roxborough. Adopted.
Mr. Mcllvain introduced an ordinance that all
ordinances relattn? to the amount of travel used in
paving shall apply to all paving, repairing and re-
paving over the water and gas pipes ana cuiveru
Passed.
Also, one requiring the supervisors to superintend
all paving andrepairing in their districts, and re
port to the chief of the Highway Department. The
supervisors to receive 100 additional. Referred.
Mr. King presented a resolution of request to the

appropriation of 75,000 tor the purpose of build
ing a bonne of correction, to be taken from a loan
to be created. Agreed to.
A number of petitions tor gas lamps, sewers,
were i resulted and appropriately referred.
Mr. Wllllts ottered a resolution instructing tho

Mr. Bardsley, of the Committee on Finance, pre

to receive $700 from an insurance compiny for in
surance on a house lately destroyed by tire, on the
almshouse ground. Agreed to.

Yesterdny Afternoon' Session.
The Bociety met at 4 o'clock yesterday
afternoon.
The report of the Committee on Nominations
was received. The names of the following
gentlemen for omcers of the Bociety were pre
sented by the committee:

The committee also recommend Williams-
port, Pa., as the place, and the second Mon
day of June next as the time, for holding the
next meeting. This report was accepted.
Dr. Atlee's resolution on the subject of
women's colleges, deferred from yesterday
morning's session, was taken up and dis
cussed. Speeches were made in favor of the
resolution by Dr3. Atlee, Parrish, John Atlee,
Corson, and Ilaysham, and in opposition by
Drs. Dell, Stetler, Maybury, Hamilton, and
others.
During the discussion, Dr. John Atlee
alluded to the age of progress in which we
live, declaring that we cannot deny to regular
graduates of a regular institution their rights
and privileges as physicians, whether they be
male or female, white or black, provided they
live according to the code of ethics. This
declaration gave rise to considerable applause,
mingled witti hisses.
Pending the discussion of the resolution,
the society adjourned until this morning.
At a circus performance in Liberty, Mo.,
on Wednesday, Professor White entered thedeu
nf linns, and waa duicklv verv triad to be hauled
out again. One of the lions, it seems, had con
ceived a dislike to White, and at once made for
him, crushed one of his irms, Lit a piece out
oi his tide, ami altogether grieved very
much.
