THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPHPHILADELPHIA, THURSDa. MAY 26, 1870. 5 CAMERON'S RESPONSE. Maar-der'. fitter Waken p the f Mld-I.t.wa A EMiaare I.e.. Jalaed. Willie Senator Cameron studiously avoids a direct personal explanation or contradiction of any of the assertions made In tbe letter of the ex-Confederate General Magruder, published by its on Saturday last, he evidently Is not content to permit these assertions to go unanswered. Consequently we find in the special Washington despatches of the Preai this morning a para graph which bears Internal evidence of having been inspired by the Senator himself. In pur suance of our custom of giving both sides of every issue in which the people St large are in terested, we quote the paragraph referred to la fall, as follows: The letter of J. Bankhead MasrrtKler, which ap peared In one of your afternoon contemporaries the other day relative to Senator CauicroD, u, I am autho rised to aay, lalBe in all Its statements. When Gene ral Cameron came Into the War Office upon the ac cession of Mr. Lincoln to the Presidency, his atten tion was first called to Magruder by General Frank lin, who advised the Secretary of ar that Magrader was a "man who would bear watching." Cameron Knew little or nothing about him, but lie mentioned the circumstance of General Franklin's suspicions to the President. In a short time these suspicions proved correct, for Majrrnder rteserted to the enemv. At that time Mr. Lincoln was ooposed to making arrests, except where It seemed to be absolutely necessary, otherwise Magruder would, perhaps, not have had the opportunity to desert (he flag, or at least to give His services to the Confederacy. With regard to Senator dameron oHVriug to send Magru , der to Russia, it is sufficient to slate that whatever was said on that subject occurred a year before the Kebellion. as Secretary of War, General Cameron of course had nothing to do with appointing persons to positions abroad. These etrort of the personal enemies of General Cameron to employ the services ol .letfersori Davis and other leading rebels to tra duce his character, while they only serve to elevate linn In the opinion and respect or all loyal men, wili aaturally redound to the Injury of those engaged in l lie disreputable business. IHTMWAl AM P lKA.EtAXIC. Th Jrflmn f Jraoinmr Nrlieol Concert. The concert of the Jefferson Girls' Grammar School, at the Academy of Music last evening, was a brilliant success in every particular. The building was crowded and the performance passed off admirably. One of the interesting features was the performance of a piano solo by Miss Lottie Virginia Bcckel, only five years of age, who displayed remarkable skill. Another Incident that excited much applause was the singing- of the "SUr-Spangled Banner." For this a grand tableau was arranged representing the Goddess of Liberty surrounded by the States. Ijuite a brilliant effect was produced and the singers were rewarded with hearty applause. The opera of Laila, by Mr. and Mrs. Stratton, was quite a pretty affair, and it was performed in a very creditable manner. This was one of the most successful school concert ever given in this city, and it was highly enjoyed by all concerned in it. Tbe (JUT Anauaeuteate. The Pennsylvania Polytechnic and Ana tomical Museum, at No. 1305 Chesnnt street, has on view an interesting collection of curiosities. Conflict with a Mad Lion. A singular contest took place lately in a Mexican village near Monterey. The Periodieo Qficial of that city gives the particulars: "Two young brothers, Engenio and Jose Maria, sons of Don Francisco Cantu, were engaged in cleaning ont a well, at a place called Los Positos. Suddenly a rabid lion appeared, and violently rushed upon one of the young men, Eugenio, knocking him senseless to the ground. The other young man, twenty years of age, on seeing the im minent danger of his brother, rushed in turn upon the beast, who immediately abandoned its prey and furiously faced the one who in tended to dispute him. "Jose Maria possesses extraordinary strength, and having succeeded in drawing his arms around the beast in an advantageous manner, he attempted to choke it. The , young man and baast rolled on the ground for some time, and finally the beast freed itself from the hold of its oppressor, in a dying condition, and the brave Cantu finished killing it by smashing its head with an agri- , cultural instrument which he was using at the time when he was attacked. The two young men were hurt more or less; the beast was attacked by hydrophobia." NlW 8PBINO BTTIJte, Men' CtJTHINO. Youths' Clothing. Hoys' Glothiku.
