She is a total low. 8be was to sail for Savannah yesterday, with a cargo of cool and railroad car wheels. A fire broke out last evening, about half past 10 o'clock, in the cigar store of Wilt fc Gale, No. 140 North Third street, dama?inir the stock to the amount of about $500. The llamcs originated near the stove. Loss fully covered by msnrance. A young man who was arrested on Friday night of last week, on the charge of breaking into a house on Watkius street, above Ninth, First ward, and who gave the name of James Corman, bos been identified by Policemen Kuhn as the nan who robbed him several months ago, when he was attacked and beaten, and had to use his pistol. The prisoner's name is said to be John Gray. The Presbyterian Board of Education held a meeting yesterday afternoon, at the rooms, Arch street, above Ninth, when the annual re port was read. Up to the present date there Lave been about 4000 new candidates for the ministry. The register of the board shows that while the rule of the Assembly permits the reception of students as early as the age of fonrteen, yet few have been sooyung at the time, and the largest numbers have ranged from eighteen to twenty-three years of age, when their purpose would bo likely to be lixed, and their qualifications for study somewhat matured. Tbe private watchman on Church street, about 9 o'clock last night, found the basement door opan, No. 204, occupied by Messrs. Carr & Lucas, importers and dealers in silk and fancy webbing. He had tried it about 8 o'clock and found it closed, as did also Oflicer Taney. Sergeant Whelan and Olllcer Campbell, of the Fourth district, thoroughly examined the premises, and found the fire-proof on the first fleor opened and thoroughly ransacked. Several checks were scattered around, among which one for ((10,000 was found. The desk drawers were all pulled out and gone through. After investigating Messrs. Carr & Lucas' store, the thieves bad ascended through the hatchway into the upholstery and shade trim ming store of Messrs. Hansell Brothers. Tho desk drawers bad been thoroughly searched, and the fire-proof had been tried with the key belonging to Messrs. Carr & Lucas, but they were unsuccessful in their attempt to open it. One of the Hansell firm arrived at the store about 10-80, but did not discover any loss. A tin box taken from Messrs. Carr fc Lucas' safe was pried open with a chisel, and found in the , basement. The loss of Messrs. Carr & Lucas is unknown, as they were not present. The thieves were evidently intent on cash only. The ladies belonging to the different Metho dist Episcopal churches throughout the city, seeing the necessity of providing a home for the aged and infirm members of their church, some time ago formed an association having that object in view. They purchased some seven acres of land on on the northeast torner of Thirteenth street and Lehigh avenue. At pre sent they own and use a structure on this ground for this purpose, but having accumu lated some 1 40,900, they design erecting a hand some and costly structure. The edifice will con sist of a main building fronting on Thirteenth street, a wing, and a chapel fronting on Camac street. The main building will have a frontage of fifty feet, with a depth of fifty-six feet. The wing will be forty feet in depth, and have a front ago of eighty-four feet The entire structure will be of brown stone, the main building three stories in height and the wing two stories, the whole surmounted by a Mansard roof. On the first floor in the main building are to be three parlors, in the wing fifteen bedrooms with the necessary bath-rooms, etc., while in the rear of these, immediately under the chapel, will be located a large and airy dining-room, with a kitchen in the rear. On the second floor of the wing will be fifteen more bed-rooms, and on the second and third floors of the main build ing will be six large sleeping apartments. The second story of the rear building Is designed for use as a chape), with servants' rooms in the rear. General Jordan and several Cuban officers have arrived in New York. ' They represent the patriot cause as being In a better condition than at any previous staee. The American Medical Association, now in session in Washington, yesterday refused to admit the delegates from the Women's Medical College and Women's Hospital In this city. The settlement of the lied River difficulty was effected by the introduction into the Do minion Parliament of the bill creating the Dis trict into a Province under the name of Mani toba. Foreign Allalra. Serrano, it is now said, will not resign, but will be invested with the full powers of Royal Kegent. Great preparations are being made by the French Government for the maintenance of order to-morrow, the day of voting on the plebiecitum. Two-thirds of the French bishops and priests now in Kome wanted to vote at the French embassy on the plebiecitum, but, much as Napoleon would like their votes, the law stood In their way.
