Peter Nenrney Homo time since wS wrested, charged with the embezzlement of $14 from Wilson, Iiockafeller fc Co., his employers. Hail was entered and Nearney fled the city. He whs arrested on Tuesday last at Gloucester, and taken yesterday before Recorder (Jivin, where Le was charged with the embezzlement of the additional sniu of $lL'f!0 from tbe same tirm. In default of bail, he was committed to answer. Yesterday afternoon the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society held a meeting at the ireen Street Methodist Episcopal Church. The exercises were commenced by singing and prajer, after which interesting addresses were delivered by Mrs. Dr. Butler of Boston, mid Mrs. Willing, from Chicago. These ladies have spent the best part of their lives as missionaries in foreign lands. Yesterday afternoon about '.i o'clock the dye and scouring works connected with the establishment of J. Mottet, iu the roar of the fitore No. 20! South Ninth street, took fire and were badly damaged. Mr. Mottet was engaged at the time in scouring some silk and woolen fabrics. He was using a preparation largely composed of benzine. The vapor arising therefrom from some cause ignited, and an explosion followed, sotting tire to the clothing of Mr. Mottet and communicating to the goods and woodwork. Mr. Mottet was dreadfully burned about the face aud limbs, the skin peeling off in places when his gar ments were removed. He was carried to the Pennsylvania Hospital. His injuries are so severe that is doubtful whether he can re cover. The dye works were damaged to the extent of $T00. The loss on goods will pro bably exceed that amount. In 1N(J4, when at the age of sixty years, a widow named Elizabeth McGuigan had a Mill drawn up, iu which the bulk of her estate, valued at fyCO.OOO, went to Henry Donaghy, a man of twenty-six years, and a cousin of the lady in question. This will wag signed, witnessed, sealed up and laid by. In W9, Mrs. McGuigan appeared at hercounsel's office, and Rtated that since the will had been drawn np she had married Mr. Donaghy, overlooking the disparity in their ages. And now that she was his wife she feared that in case of her deuth the will would not secure the property to her husband. She wanted another drawn np, identical with the first, save in this that the second will should recog nize Mr. Donaghy as her husband. This document was written and duly authenticated by witnesses, and in a short time the lady died. When tbe will was taken to the Regis ter of Wills' office to be proven, it was dis covered that the relatives of the deceased, who regarded the secret marriage as no mar riage at all, had filed a cacent, restraining the Register from granting Mr. Donaghy letters testamentary under the will, upon the ground of its invalidity. They allege that the testa trix, at the timo of making the will, was not of sound mind. Yesterday a long hearing of the case was given by the Register, and a mass of evidence was gathered. Both wills are on file. The genuineness of them is proven. How either is to bo broken by the contesting heirs is a problem. Domratlo Attn Ira. Gold closed yesterday at 11 1 . A bank at Rockland, Maine, has been robbed of upwards of $20,000. The bill to repeal the franking privilege comes up in the Senate to-day. Marshal Blum has been nominated in op position to General Garfield, in Washington Territory. ' The House joint resolution granting the widow of the late General Riwlins a year'8 pay has passed the Senate. Resolutions favoring the construction of a railroad on the thirty-second parallel to the Pacific Ocean, and the grant of the franchise to the Southern Transcontinental Railway Company, w ere passed by the House Sub committee on Pacific Railroads yesterday. In the United States Senate yesterday afternoon, after the close of our report, bills were passed allowing the settlement of accounts of army and navy disbursing offi cers, enabling the Secretary of the Treasury to collect derelict claims, etc., relating to pay of deputy collectors, and in reference to the operation of the Bankrupt act in the Terri tories. After an executive session, the Senate adjourned. In the House the Tariff bill was resumed in committee. On steel railway bara the duty was made 2 cents per pound, on bara partly made of steel cents, and on metal prepared by the Bessemer process $'M per ton. On steel wire lss than inch diameter and not less than No. 13 gauge, L'J cents and 20 per cent, ad valorem, and finer than No. 13, 3 cents and 20 per cent.; provided that wire for musical instruments, or covered with silk, cotton, etc., shall pay 25 per cent, in addi tion. The opposition in tha CEcumenical Coun cil has been greatly reinforced of late. Richard Tattersall, head of the well known betting concern in London bearing his name, is dead. Over two thousand arrests have been made in connection with the alleged French conspiracy since Saturday. A general revolution it feared in San Domingo, unless the United States interferes and ratifies the cession of Sanama. The Venezuelan revolutionists seem to be carrying everything before them. Only four ports are now held by the Government. Female suffrage formed the subject of a debate in the House of Commons last even ing, and the bill providing foi it passed to a second reading.
