These, in conjunction with the members of the board holding over, will meet next Tuesday evening, elect officers for the ensuing year, and attend to further business of an interesting and important character. Home Association was held yesterday after noon at the Home. Owing to the illness of Charles Gibbons, Esq., President of the asso ciation, the llev. Wilbur F. Paddock was called upon to preside. After the reading of the report an election for officers to serve for the ensuing year was held. Last evening the Woman's Foreign Mis sionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church held a meeting at the Green Street M. E. Church. Quite a large audience was pre sent. Colonel John Wright acted as chair man. The exercises were opened with sing ing and prayer. An address was then delivered by Rev. J. D. Brown, a returned missionary, on "Wo man's Work in India." Last evening the thirty-eighth anniver sary of the Northern Liberties Bible Society was held in the Fifth Street Methodist Church, Fifth street, below Green. The attendance was quite large. The exercises were opened with Binging, after which prayer was offered by the pastor, Rev. J. Todd. . . The thirty-eighth annual report of the sooiety was then read. A Dampeneb to Congressman O'Netll "Neither a First-class Lawxkb nob a Busi ness Man" John Prick Wetherill his Pro posed Successor. At a meeting, largely at tended, of the Republican voters of the Tenth ward, held at the northeast corner of Broad and Race streets, at which Josiah Kis terbock, Esq., presided, Joshua Spering, Esq., offered the following preamble and resolutions: Whertas, A crisis has arrived when the industrial Interests of tbe nation are imperilled by a meat de termined free-trade assault, backed by both domeattc and foreign capital, and when an especial aim with the enemies of home Industry seems to be to Injure the manufactures of Pennsylvania, and to render our State a subject of unjust reproach on account of her persistent adheslen to the policy of protection; and Whereas, It Is most important that at such a time we should be represented In Congress by our strong est and best mn. in order that the Commonwealth may command respect by the high-minded Inde pendence and Integrity, as well as eminent personal worth of her delegates, and at the same time have men there qualiiied by education and long experi ence to speaa Knowingly or toe lnausinai ana commercial lateresti of our Btate ana city : mere fore jusolved. That we present to the citizens of the Second Congressional district the name of John Price Wetherill, a manufactarer and merchant of the third generation, in connection with the trade and industry 01 mis city, a gentleman or liberal eau catlon.ot large meana and Independent position. Ion Identified with public ail airs as a member of our municipal Counclls.a member of the Board of Trade, and for years an active, useful, aud Influential busi ness man. Ktwlved, That snch a man In Congress would be able to bring to the legislation of the republics an ' amount of experience and practical ability In fi nance, commerce, industry, and general trade that would be of vast benefit to the public Interests aud of essential service to our city aud State, and that we therefore ask the citizens of the district to nomi nate him, in the confident belief that they ooald nWA r.,k,Aw alatinn at all ai filtlnir at Hmi like the present. Before offering the resolves Mr. Spering tfificH s tha nror n a Ctrl rvf rmvmnr a iitja active, intelligent business man in Congress to guard the interests of both city and State. .- The gentlemen who had inaugurated this movement thought Mr. Wetherill eminently " fitted for the honor of not only a Congres- , , sional nomination but election. . G. M. Kennedy, Esq., followed 'with the declaration that the members of the Kepub lican party were convinced that its salvation could only be secured by a radical reform in their representatives at Harrisburg, Washing ton and in Councils as well. He deprecated the present system of letting delegates, at primary meetings sparsely attended, rule the -' nominations, and making a ticket which the party waa forced to swallow whole 'with the devil npon it." He declared that the Second Congressional district owed it to itself to be represented in Washington by - either a first-rate lawyer or a first-rate business man. He didn't want to take auy exceptions to the personal character of the present Representative, Mr. O'Neill. He votes richt. but the district wanted something more than mere voting right. It wanted a man that could uphold and protect and defend with his voice those great industrial interest of the city of Philadelphia. , euen a man must either be a first-rate lawyer or a business man that has a practical know ledge of the wants and conditions of our industries which enables him to talk common sense if be cannot make eloquent speeches. He regarded Mr. O'Neill as a very eiever man, very clever indeed. But this did not make Mr. O'Neill a first-rate lawyer or a first-rate business man, and this being the case in him, the district is not fitly or rigut on to the general subject of corruption and bribery in our Legislature, and declared that if the Republican party persisted in sending 'rina politicians there, "it would be damned and ought to be damned."
