THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRARH PHILADELPHIA, TUESDaT, APRIL 12, 1870. ix n w-ir o xi k x s xvi s.v From Our Own Corrmrxmaenu New York. April VI, 1870. C'arlottn I'svttl has been fecllnff her wiy softly and slowly toward appearing In opera. For the past week jou mlRlit have noticed that paragraphs have appeared In all the No w York newspapers sus pectlnjr, inviting, entreating, conjecturing, and sopposing, with reference to such an event. A'l of these paragraphs were put forth as feelers by Mr. Btrakosch and Mr. Fryer, the agents of Pattl, who were doubtful as to how her appear ance In opera would be received. You may per haps remember that some tears ago a sort of boot, which It was thought would conceal her lamenesB, was invented for her in order to enable her to enact an operatic role with out pain to the audience. The attempt was un successful. The limp was very apparent, and the only emotions which Carlotta excited were admiration for her voice and commiseration for her physical misfortune. In the Magic Flute, however, in which she Is to appear next Tuesday evening, little or no motion will be exacted from her. In the way of action the most that she will be required to do will be to come up through a tiap-door and descend by similar means. It is worth remarking that whenever the Magic Flute is performed, which it very seldom is, two arias are generally "cut" for the simple reason that they exact a range of voice which few prime donne possess. Now Miss Fatti promises not only that the two arias shall be retained, but that she will give them with two tones higher than any one else is able to do. She is to be assisted by Hermanns, Habclmann, Wilheltn Forme, and Pauline Canlssa. Her success in this city has been extraordinary. At the Satur day matinee the supplementary hall was thrown open in addition to the large one, and both were filled with ladies. Female Physiologists. To be a physiologist travelling around with a mannikin is the utmost ambition of a good many women in this city, as I intimated the other day. I received confirmation of this fact only yesterday, in reference to a very estimable New Yorkeress who had been wont to attend to the lady patients of her husband. She was as pure a blonde as ever appeared at MWq'S, witn one of these fresh satin-paper skins that look as though they were cream-laid, brown and golden hair, in which the golden tints might be taken for brown and the brown tints for gold. She was the Terr pictnre of a buxom little wife, expressly invented by heaven for the light of the fireside, and the very last specimen of womanhood whom you would dream of seeing upon the lecturer's rostrum. A few inquiries informed me of her fate for her former place knew her no more and my informant was her husband himself. She has gone "up the coun try" to learn grammar, and was now cramming 'Lindlay Murray" among the brooks and or chards. After having mastered grammar, which ahe bad unfortunately neglected in early girl hood, she was to take up elocution and gesture. After that she was to have a lecture written for her, to be provided with a mannikin, and to go lecturing around the country. The subject was to he physiology, and a good voice, a handsome presence, winning manners, and the mannikin were to do her business. A female physiologist who had already taken her in band, and had made some success herself, was to introduce her to the public, and she herself had voluntarily chosen "public life" as a relief to the ennui of a childless home. And many there be in New York who follow in these female-physiology steps. Mr. Fechter Is soon to make his reappearance in this city, and to appear at the French theatre both In English and French. Necessarily he will be ex tremely busy, because he intends to do two things whieh threaten to interfere with one another. One of these is to faithfully superin tend rehearsals of several new plays, and the other Is to give sittings for a portrait of Christ. It is said that the circumstance which is to be represented in this portrait is Christ wearing the crown of thorns. The remarkable, and by this time notorious, resemblance which the por trait of Mr. Fechter, as "Hamlet," bears to the generally accepted pictures of the Saviour, pre pares us to believe that the likeness for which these special sittings are to be given will be very striking indeed. Handy to Have la the House. A certain physician of this city who has electricity on the brain, and who so consistently professes to cure by lightning every disease that humanity is or can be afflicted with, that his , rooms are dally filled with patients, intends shortly to flood the city with pamphlets in forming the public of a new idea that has got into his noddle, and which writing about Is the only means of getting out again. That idea Is to have currents of electricity introduced Into every house in much the same manner as gas and water are Introduced now. He thinks that by thi3 means every man may become his own phy sician, and that the sanitary effects are incal culable. Just to think of it ! To have strength turned on at the touch of a screw, and pains and aches vanish at the application of a wire ! To know that you have at hand the negative and positive poles, and that one of them stands for health and the other for happiness ! To have in every bed-room In the house a special little spigot which turns on unlimited quantities of sound mind and sound body 1 To know, when you have got wrong side up, that all you have got to do is to go to the battery in the same way as you go to the bath-tub, and there you are ! The Idea is as beautifully poetic as it is practical, and you will agree with me that Dr. Chamberlin's plan for supplying New York with electricity is a handy thing to have in the house. Natnrdny Nlaht Reporters. One or two of the New York Sunday news papers are so ravenous after news on Saturday night that they adopt extraordinary means to obtain it. The Mercury, for instance, employs between forty and fifty reporters, and the A'ewa hires a bactt fur the accommodation ot its Bohemians and sends tlieni round to spy out the nakedness of New York. This is the reason the A'eies, on Sundays, is such good family reading. All B.MIA. city ixi:m. Coolant THE PIECE. jubt opened, Fine assortment. New Styles, Choice Pat teuks.
