All editors aro not tho poor devils which they are too often represented to be. Rich ones thrive rank iu New York, and aro frequent enough to inako one sometimes forget the hundreds of poor ones. The editor-proprietors of all tho principal papers are men who aro well to do. They live in brown stone, they dress in broad cloth, they assume fine linen, and sooner or later arrive at tho happiness of residing on Fifth avenue. The latc6t editor who has achieved this felicity is Mr. IIu,'h J. Hastings, of the Commercial Advertiser. One day this week he paid feixty-flve thousand dollars for a mansion on that blissful avenue, and has since been offered ten thousand dollars more for it, but was 60 well contented with his bargain as to refuse. Air. Foster's Board Bill. There surely ought to have been enough money realized out of tho Twelve Temptations; or, The Lost Son, by this time, to defray the trivial expenses of Mr. J. C. Foster's board in the suit brought against him by Mrs. Mary Tisdalo. Tho Brooklyn landlady Is evidently in different to the fate of tho "Lost Son," bo that ehc don't lose her money. Tho examination has been adjourned from day to day until yesterday, when Mr. Cole, tho treasurer, was asked a few questions, whence it transpired that the agree ment between Foster, Deverna, and McDonough on tho one part, and Mr. Colo and tho Grand Opera House Company on the other part, was that tho three first-named gentlemen were to receive one-half tho net profits of the entire representation after deducting $3300 per week for expenses and internal revenue tax. Cnrlottn Caul's Fnrewell. People who go to Rio Janeiro sometimes re turn, but this does not seem likely to be the case with Miss Carlotta Patti. After a few faro well concerts here she will proceed to that Brazilian metropolis, whence, after having made all the money that is to be made and accepted all the presents that fall in her way, sho departs lor Europe, where she can undoubtedly make more money than in this country. "Why does she come here?" may bo asked. Partly from the novelty of the thing, partly from tho desire to conquer fresh provinces (I will not bring in Alexander, that cry-baby conqueror), but cer tainly not with the expectation of making more money than in the old country. Dim. Crowe sailed for England last Thursday from this port, but intends returning here in tho autumn for tho purpose of producing Fietra, which was promised but withheld last season. When I last saw her Roman-visaged pa ho told me that from these garish lights (see Dickens' farewell speech) ehc intended vanishing for but a few months. The aged P. looked extremely well, but can't make up his mind how to invest his money, Upon arriving In England Mrs. Crowe intends resting for a few months at her country seat near Bristol. ParrnB-llona ends her season here to-night. Of all tho operas In which she has appeared during tho three weeks of tho season, The Marriage of Figaro remains the favorite, perhaps because of those involuntarily comic scenes in which the largo ness of Euphrosyne is brought into ridiculous contrast with the littleness of Miss Rose llersoe Kepentln at I.el.ure. Repenting at leisure is what a wretched and betrayed young woman is doing who has just had an experience in the Spicgler liouso which, If her extreme foolishness have any sediments of virtue left in it, will haunt her to ber dying day. Not long ago she was allured by an adver tisement in one of the newspapers to tho effect that a gentleman of pleasing exterior and ample fortune wished to correspond with a young lady with a view to matrimony. Tho advertisement closed with the request that correspondents re Diving would address their replies to No. 2 Amity street a sort of rendezvous for corrcspon dents of that nature, formerly kept by Leo Bal- eky. The young lady whose eye this met, and whom I shall call Kate, earned a difllcult living by dressmaking, lived in the obscure little eity of Toledo, Ohio, and jumped at this apparent good fortune. Her friends appear to have jumped with her, for they encouraged her In her correS' pondence with the advertiser, and finally lent her money to come to this city with, and fitted her out with a becoming trousseau. The conse quenco was that when she and her trunks ar rived in this city and she came hero alone her gentlemanly correspondent met her with every evidence of delight and conducted her in triumph to the Speigler House, a fashionable hotel facing Union Square, on Broadway, above Fourteenth street. He had already entered their names on the book as man and wife, and found but little dlfllculty in being permitted to occupy tho same room with her during the night, promising that they should get married In the morning. The next morning ere she was up the young devil had cleared out, leaving her w ith no mouey and a heavy board bill to pay. A pure o has been made up for her, and she has been sent home. Ali Uaha. The i'llv A in ii act oi en t. At tiie Academ r or Music the second Pattl concert lact evening attracted a nootl audleuce, in Bpite of the very disagreeable gute of the weather. Miss Pattl aanir the "Shadow 8011" Irom JHnorah, an aria from The Magie Flute, and, with Mr. Kilter, a duo from L'Klisir d Amour. These excited the entUuHlasm of tho audience In a liitrh degree, aud the lady was several times recalled. Indeed, the eaoore were too numerous to be entirely complimentary, and Mr. Kitler, ou being twice recalled, treated UU audience to a plnee of practical sutlrp In tho fliiipe of a medley comported ot "Captain .liiks," "Shoo Flj," "Hull Columbia." and 'Yankee IUxulle."
