FROM TEE FLAMS. The riearan Flsht Letter from Col. Baker. Washington, March sa The following was re ceived to-day at army headquarters: jtoht ellis, Montana, atarcn us, 1S70. General P. H. Sheridan, Commanding Military Division, Chi cago: In answer to your telegram received on the Mil Inst., 1 report that after having made every effort to get the judgment of the officers of tbe command, I was satisfied the following number approximates as nearly to me extract truiu as possiuie : The number killed at the Plegan village was 1T3, of whom 120 were able-bodied men, aud 68 women and children; 14 women and children were after wards captured and released. I believe that every effort was made by the officers and men to protect the non-combatants, and such women and children as were killed were accidentally killed. The report published in the Uasiern papers Is Wholly aud maliciously false. It seems incredible that the false assertions of two persons, neither of whom had made any efforts to Inform themselves In the matter, should outweigh the reports of those engaged in the light, aud who feel that they have nothing to palliate or conceal In their conduct. All that the officers of the command ask or the author! ties is a full aad complete Investigation of the cam- ,, and less than this cannot be conceded them. (Signed) C. L.
