A publio meeting of colored persons wan held lout evening, at Liberty Hall, Lombard Street, below Eighth, for the purpose of diHcnwiing the question of forming politi cal organizations. Speeches were made by Messw. O. Catto, 8. Gould, Whipple Nalal, and others, urging the necessity of immedi ate organizstioB. The following cases were yesterday ad mitted into the Pennsylvania Hospital: John McCallum, of No. C27 Sprnoe street, fractured leg; William Cox, No. 714 Wyatt street, fractured thigh; William Simmons, No. 407 riessant street, two fingers cut off; Florence McCarty, collar bone broken; Charles Manning, No. 11)18 Erb street, feet injured; Annie Smith, No. 1 Northampton place, frac tured arm. John Gregg, a tinsmith, 29 years old, residing in Evergreen street, above Twenty fhttt, fell from the roof of a new building, on the Gray's Ferry road, near Fitz water street, yehterday morning, and received a fracture of the skull, from the effects of which he died in a half hour. At the time of the occur rence he was ascending a small ladder, placed against the slope of the Mansard roof, aadjt s ipped from nnder him. Yesterday two men entered the bakery of Mr. John Metzgar, No. 907 South Six teenth street, and requested change for a bank bill. While one of them engaged the attention of Mrs. Metzgar, the other man went up stairs un perceived, stole two Prus sian dollars from a box in a closet, and was detected in the act of descending the stairs. He was handed over to a policeman, and upon being taken to a station and searched, the btolen dollars were found on him, besides a jimmy. In the afternoon he had a hearing before Alderman Kerr, and gave the name of William Scott. He was recognized as an old offender, having served out a term of impri sonment for robbing a man in a shoe store on Race street, near Second, and a ninety days' sentence under the professional thieves' law. Last evening the Academy of Music was crowded with a large and enthusiastic audi ence, on the occasion of the twenty-f fth anni versary of Friendship Division, No. 19, Sons of Temperance.1 At a quarter before 8 o'clock, Governor John W. Geary, Hon. Schuyler Col fax, General O. O. Howard, Rev. H. Johnson, and Rev. J. P. Newman made their appear ance on the stage, the band playing "Hail to the Chief." The meeting was called to order by General Louis Wagner, after which he in troduced Governor John V. Geary as the Chairman of the meeting. The report of the division was read, setting forth that it was represented by sixty-nine members in the Grand Division; and that 1253 members had been initiated since its organi zation. The present strength is set down at 247 members. The chairman, in a few well timed remarks, introduced Hon. Schuyler Colfax, Vice-President of the United States. He was greeted with deafening shouts of ap plause. In opening his address he said this, the silver anniversary of Friendship Division, reminded him that it was also the twenty-fifth anniversary of his connection with the glo rious cause of temperance, and in all those years gone by he had not broken his pledge of total abstinence. He portrayed in elo quent language the many evils result ing 1 from ' the - ' use of intoxicatng beverages, lie Urged his hearers to guard against and avoid the demon, which he char acterized as a greater scourge, and spreading more sorrow and desolation over the laud, than was occasioned by the late civil strife, which desolated and robbed thousands of families of their loved ones. He wanted to particularly impress on the minds of his audience that safety was ajone found in total abstinence from strong drink. He urged them to unite in a grand revival to advance the cause of temperance. He laid before his bearers statistics showing the terrible de moralization caused by the traffic in liquors. He was frequently greeted with applause and took his seat amid vociferous cheers. Major General O. O. Howard and Rev. J. P. New man followed in eloquent speeches, which were interrupted throughout with cheers of approbation. Domestic Allaire. Gold closed yesterday at lllj. Bailey's defalcations will not amount to more than $125,000. John Harris, of this State, has been nominated for Consul at Venice. A Cuban expedition has effected a land ing near Nueva Grandes. John L. Stevons, of Maine, has been con firmed as Minister Resident to Uruguay. The new Minister from Ecuador was presented to the President yesterday. The Senate Postal Committee will not vote to subsidize the Australian steamers. Mr. Sumner'H speech against accepting the San Domingo treaty is to be published. The House Postal Committee are opposed to giving letter carriers increased salaries. The PoBtraaster-Genoral yesterday made a number of post oflice changes in Pennsyl vania. There is a strike of laborers at Des Moines Rapids, Iowa, and yesterday some cungutoary riots took place, It is very properly proposed that the work of removing the Hell Gate obstructions to New York shull bo continued. Governor Geary has signed tho bill pro hibiting markets between the north line of Girard avenue and the south line of Walnut fctrett. A meeting of Uicksile Friends was held in New York last evening in relation to the Cherokee Indians, at which several members of tlmt nation spoke. The Bridgoton District was first taken tip, Rev. A. E. Ballard Pre siding Elder. Supernumerary relations were granted to Rev. F. A. Morrell, on account of bad health. Rev. L. Herr asked for a supernumerary rela tion, which was granted. The second question, "Who Remain on Trial?" was token up. Rev. Alonzo Chambers was continued. Considerable debate ensued in the case of Rev. W. S. McCowan, who it was alleged had been rather imprudent in his relations with his people. A motion was made that the whole matter be referred to a committee of three to examine into the condition of things and report to conference. Adopted. The fourth question, "Who are the Dea. cons ?" was taken up. The case of R. W. F. Randolph was the only one taken up. His case was reported favorably and he was con tinned. The seventh question, "Who are the Super numerary Preachers," was resumed. Revs B. F. Woolston and T. Sovereign were con tinned as Supernumeraries. The third question of the minutes, "Who are admitted into full connection?" was taken rip. The following were charged by the Bishop Revs. C. I. Downs, L. W. Lake, C. A. Malsbury, P. G. Johnson, John S. Gaskill, E. J. Lippincott. They will be ordained on Sunday next. During the year Revs. W. F. Silvers and J. F. Smith died. Conference went into the discussion of the place to hold the next annual session of the conference. Three points were named, viz.: Broadway Church, Salem; Trinity Churoh, Trenton; and Third Street Church, Camden. Broadway Church, Salem, received seventy sine votes, which was a majority of the whole number of conference. The vote was then made unanimous. The vote on lay delegation in the different districts of the conference was reported through the Presiding Elders. The vote was taken in last October. The following was the result in four districts, Camden district rot reporting: New Brunswick District Total vote on lay delegation, 885. For lay delegation, 407; against, 388. Majority, 109. Trenton District Total vote of lay delega tion, 1054. For lay delegation, 760; against, 294. Majority, 400. Burlington District Total vote on lay de legation, 8ti7. For lay delegation, 55(i; against, 311. Majority, 245. Bridgeton Distriot Total vote of lay dele gation, 121a. J-or lay delegation, 89;; against, 318. Majority, C41. It was moved that the vote on lay delega tion on the part of the conference be made the special order of the day at 10 o clock to morrow. It was moved as a substitute that the vote be taken immediately, and that the time be extended for that purpose. JOHN ECKSTEIN, Clerk of Common Council. A N ORDINANCE TO CREATE A LOAN -tv FOR THE BUILDING OF A BRIDGE OVER THE BlVEIt SCHUYLKILL AT SOUTH tTl.KET. AND FOR THE PAYMENT OF GROUND RENTS AND MORTGAGES. Section 1. The Select and Common Councils of the City of Philadelphia do ordain, That the Mayor of Philadelphia be and he is hereby authorized to borrow, at not less than par, on the credit of the city, from time to time, 0110 million five hundred thousand dollars, to be ap plied as follows, viz.: first, ror the buildlm? of a bridge over the River bchuylkill at South street, eight hundred thousand dollars.
