the main entrances from the west, and
that these streets ought to be at once newly
paved, at public expense, with the most de

THE SMIDT.
Her Safe Arrival at New Yark-Caase of the
Delay.
Nxw York, March 11. The missing steamer
Bmidt, which arrived to-day in forty-eight
days from Bremen, reports having been
obliged to make the passage south of Ber
muda, in consequence of the engine break
ing, which took twelve days to repair. , She
had a succession of hurricanes for the first
twenty days, and since had light winds and
fair weather. When the machinery was re
paired she could only be run at half speed,
and hence the delay in the voyage.
The Bmidt, of whioh Thiele, Motz & Co.
are agents, left Bremen on the 22d of January.
There is no end of conjectures as to the fate
of the Citv of Boston, the other "missing"
steamer. There is a strong hope now that
Bhe may have put into the Azores, with
these islands, it must be borne in mind, com
munication is nnfrequent and uncertain, and
days may yet elapse before an arrival from
that quarter is reported. On the other hand,'
however, the numerous reports of vessel
passing over the trail of the missing steamer,
as to the vast quantities of ice enoountered, ,
are anything but reassuring. The Bremen
steamer New York, hence, at Southampton
yesterday, reports passing many icebergs,
noma of them of "mountainous uize. nail
ins vessels at thia port, coming from Europo,
make like reports almost every day. Still, as
the Simdt has come into port safe and sound,

"Hamlet" and Fechter.
A correspondent sends m tbe following criti
cism on Mr. Fechter's personation of "Hamlet:"
In the very first year of the seventeenth century a
diama was written In London. The author was a
stage manager arid proprietor, run or work, an emi
nently succt-SHful and practical man, who had built
himself a fortune by his own labor. With the repa-
uttiuu ui ueiug a ruiuuu repruuaie, uo imu run away
irom Dome to escape imprisonment Derore he was
twenty, to commence life as call-boy at a theatre ; at
tweoty-fl ve he was a shareholder In the same theatre,
and an author of repute on the rood to fortune ; at
thirty-three he purchased a handsome house ; and
at forty retired from active lire to enjoy an existence
of elegant ease with the fame of belrnza canitai
business man, as well as the author of about fortv of
vjio uent uuuuk ur&iuas ui um lime.
u rns is, in Drier, the history or Shakespeare, and
yet by some strange freak one of his most success
ful tragedies nos been separated from the rest, to
serve as a mere intellectual problem. Hamltt is
read line by line, and scanned syllable br syllable.
until every word becomes a text so pregnant with
meaning that it Is In danger of meaning nothing at
all, and the hero must lose all Individuality In order
to become a problem In metaphysics.
In fact, the play was written by an active mana
ger of a theatre, to suit the demands of his aadlence,
and in the steady pursuit of so practical an aim, a
great and good man wrote a glorious drama, just as
a plain printer In after times undertook a "model
letter-writer" wnicn turned into the first novel, and
an antiquary putting his lnformatloa into a market
able shape found It grow Into t)ij Wa verier Novels.
uomist is an aomiraoie acting play ; ir it is also
something more, let it oe carefully studied as an
ent'rety, but not so treated that it Is debased Into a
mere public reading lesson, over which actor and
audience alike bewilder weir Drains.
Now. Mr. reenter mav not be the "Hamlet" or
even a good "Hamlet." but at one dash he destroys
this old-established system of rendition. He treats
uie wageay as u it was a new arama written but
yesterday, and as if no one had ever studied it before
as if he bad purchased it for himself, and hod
bought the undisputed right to read It according to
mi own unoemiauuing.
Never for one moment does tne auditor ston to
wonder which of the eight readings of "there are
more things in heaven and earth." etc.. tbe artist
win cnooBe, or wnat ne will do wita "to be or not to
DC.
The standard stage student who doubts every.
thing and then doubts his doubts, never appears ;
there Is not even a glimpse ol his note book. Mr.
Fechter has imagined the hero to be a poetic youth,
averse u ucuuu, yet urgeu to id against nis will.
The artist. In his mind's eye, sees a man mirrored.
This man may not be bhakespeares "Hamlet;"
he certainly Is not the conventional "Ham
let," but he is a man consistent In
every thought and deed, and no mere
bundle or aphorisms. The actor has thought his
way straight through all the perplexities : lie be
lieves that the play lias one simple, obvious mean
ing, and, strangely enough, the words, obedient to
his power, do mean npon his tongue Just what he in
tends them to. Although not quite ready to accept
nis vers-ou 01 tne piay, yet wnue unuer nis personal
Influence and presence the auditor feels as f by
some magic chance he had been permitted to see
the "oiigmai" text unblemished with marginal
references and unuonfused by foot-notes, and the
memory afterwards does not rest admiringly upon
"points," but recalls a harmonious and effective
whole.
