THE DAILY EVENING TELEGKAril PHILADELPHIA, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 1.), 1870. 3 C1t AfTnlrn. About lialf-pt 0 o'clock lout evening a sllKbt tire took place at No. 144 South street. Low. 1200. A young man who gave the name of Edward Jones wa- arrested yestcrdar afternoon, Inn me diately after be bad jumped off a car on the Second Street Railway, charged with picking the pocket of Mr. James W. Culbcrtson. Alder man Kerr held tbe prisoner for his appearance at conrt. Tbe Coroner was notified last evening to hold an Inquest at the Kloventh District Station House on the body of Isabella Mchafy, aged forty years, who died snddenly at the first toll gate on the Second street road. The Building Inspectors have taken measures for the removal of the dangerous walls left standing by the fire at Kroner's mills 011 Thurs day. Meanwhile, the Mayor has ordered travel on the street to be stopped. During the storm last evening the brick dwellings Nos. 1M1 and 1913 Christian street were struck by lightning and the back window frames were torn out of the walls. Ko person was Injured. Yesterday afternoon the sub-committee from the Committee on Highways of Councils In spected the different bridges of the city, and lound that, as a geuurl thing, they were In need of repair. This is espclully the case with the Wire Bridge and Market Street Bridge, and at tention Is to be given the matter at oace. A moss meeting of colored persons was held last evening, at Liberty Hall, Lombard street, near Eighth, to hear the report of the commltteo of twenty-five, appointed at a late meeting to devise plans for the proper celebration of the adoption of the fifteenth amendment to the Con stitution of the United States. A discussion arose in the Senate yesterday on the bill to promote the International ExtalbU tion proposed to be held in Washington in 1871. It is thought the project will receive little aid In this quarter. One of the contestants in the Mayoralty dif ficulty in Mobile has been committed to jail for refusing to surrender the office to his opponent. The conduct of the committing judge meets with ccneral condemnation. Mr. Lo wry offered in the House yesterday a resolution for the appointment of a committee to inquire whether Colonel McFarland had been guilty of misdemeanor as Superintendent of the Orphans' Schools. No action was taken. Further testimony was taken yesterday re- epoetin g the alleged sale of cadctships. From Our Own Correspondent. ' New Yobk, Feb. 19, 1870. ' ' . r Oliver Dyer' Double. , , It has been said that every man has his "dou , Me" tbat Is, that somewhere in the world there ; exists as perfect a counterpart of himself in form and feature as is consistent wlta the nnl versally recognized principle that nature never docs send forth an exact repetition or. nereeiL The friends of Mr. Oliver Dyer have been very forward in claiming that nature never did attemDt to repeat herself In bringing forth a counterpart of him. An Impecunious Impostor, however, has been making the round of New York streets during the past week, claiming to be not the counterpart of Mr. Dyer, b-at that gentleman himself. . .To make his claims good he has ' been simulating a number of interesting diseases, each of which . was presumed to present distinct and peculiar claims to charity. He talked "good," boasted of his spiritual woes and warfares, and without . exactly displaying sores like a modern Laza . ... linn Vio ml" unri hfnt nnnn crpat.Inir a I Uil w.v MWH.r ' L n sensation he managed to intimate that they were "all there," and that : he, the sufferer, was Identical with that magazine-chap of genius who wrote the Wickedest Man out ef a money making groggery on Water street, and Into a respectable temperance grocery, where he just manages to make his rent. Now should this accomplished outcast (I refer to the Imposter nd not to the conulne Oliver" travel to Phila delphia, there are between him and the maga zinlst one or two points of difference of which I wish to give the broad-brims warning. The original Oliver has no wounds nor bruises either 'of a physical or spiritual nature, and If he had he would keep them to himself and not make them, a. means of extorting alms. . . .' mi i-ll fiKKanllima. There are three theatrical novelties now claim ing , ottonttnn nf t.hft nubile. One of them Is the "Hamlet" of Mr. Fechtor, another the "Hamlet" of Mr. Fox, and the third Mr. Daly's Frou-Frou the long-announced drama ,of ' ' "powerful human Interest." Of the two "Ham lets" (leaving out all consideration of Mr. Booth's), I think I prefer that of Mr. Fox. It is ; about all that it professes , tQ be extremely " huinoTiJorae. When, with the attitude and bear ing Of the graceful Edwin himself, Mr. Fox ciimes upon the scene with a pocket handker chief in one hand and the Police Gazette in the other, the burlesque is no los laughable because the statellness and dignity of Mr, Booth are seen to be the material upon wuoh the burlesque is built. Mr. Fox's appearance of late In , rolet of legitimate comedy have not been very . . . . i i.t-.t . . successiui wncn compareu wim nis pantomimic ' representations, but in this travestied "Hamlet" , he has made a hit which fills the hoise every night, and will bear biin prosperously on to an . ' other run of fortune. I grieve to eay that by presuming to appear in a character which Edwin Booth has inado to supremely bis own, Mr. Fechter has only i,om nnrm hlmpi'lf the comparison he so defl- i w v a. a " " r - I ' - ir? . - tiq , Hilly hallcnged, and that that comparison has tot be n in his favor. "Dutchy" is one of the Itnet Inelegant of the descriptive epithets that lave been lav It-lied upon him. True, the bouses have been crowded nightly, andtho gentlemanly creatures in the ticket ofllee have been wcll nlgh Insulted at divers hours of the day and night for not having on hand sufficient seats wherewith to satisfy the public. But this suc cess is the merely temporary one of curiosity and tbe curiosity itself is very soon slaked. After the third act la over people leave the theatre in droves, and having been disgusted with Mr. Fechter's chef d'auvre, wish to see nothing more of him. Frou-Frou, by Mr. Daly, is not a success. I hall have more to say of it next week. AIIm Anthony's Birthday. This occasion was duly celebrated on Tnesday night, when the Woman's Bureau, In Twenty third street, was crowded with ladles and gen tlemen, most of whom took an Interest in the woman's suffrage movement. Since Miss An thony squarely and fairly owns np that her age is fifty, there is no reason why I should deli cately beat about the bush. But at any rate she don't look fifty, and she did not on that occa sion. She stood at the top of the first flight of stairs, dressed in a short silk dress of black and dark red. Of course, after numerous hand shakings, there was a "call" for the victim of the occasion, and in response to stamping of feet and clapping of hands Miss Anthony reite rated what she had often said before, namely, that as long as there was a right grudged her sex she would be found with her shoulder to the wheel. And the writer of these lines believes yon, Susan. With all your faults, he believes you're the very salt of the suffrage question. New York Reporters at New York Italia. I have been to "a many" balls iq Philadelphia, but never to one at which so much attention was 'paid to newspaper people as was lavished upon them on Thursday evening at the bal masque of the Arlon Vocal Society. It was a touching and healthy spectacle that presented by the nicely furnished Utile room which had been set apart expressly for them. There they sat at various desks and tables, a couple of score of journallets, each in dress suit, and each wield ing a pen intent for the moment upon giving a picturesque description of the affair for his espe cial "organ. While they are thus throwing off those brisk paragraphs which read so prettily In the morning's newspapers, various bottles of champagne and Rhine wine are brought in, and almost enough corks are heard popping to corre spond to every note of punctuation. The writing of the most of these.rcports Is finished by midnight, at which hour, the business of the night over, the reportorial corps is supposed to be ripe for its pleasures. The various reports are confided to se feral small boys kept in wall ing, or in the pay of the association giving the ball, and by half past 12 my report is safe- in the hands of the managing editor or foreman of the newspaper it was intended for. This is a neat way of doing the business, is it not ? Why don't Philadelphia do the work in similar style ? It would be sure to be reciprocated in some way . or other. Bread so cast upon the waters returns buttered after very few days. Such is the experience of Ali Baba. MARINE TELEGRAPH. For additional llarin Xews see First Pane. ALMANAC FOB PHILADELPHIA THIS DAY.
