THE DAILY EVENING rEIJKjHArn PHILADELPHIA, MONDAY, JANUARY 31, 1870. 5 ItllMAl AIM) 11 It A 91 ATI C "lmlnn" Mt the Wnlnnt. . A large audlt-tieo was attracted to lUo Walnut on Saturday evening to wlinocn the first per formance of llic new play of London; or, The 'Light and fthndntm of thct Great City. Thin titio held out nonio expectations that worn not -realized by the piece itself, which inljrht ho located anywhere cl.e ns well as In London, and thtro In nutbliiff w hatever in Us plot, character, or incidents to connect it w ilh the HillisUine itropoll. The eccnery for the most part con alat of view in and about London which have the appearance of being accurate, nl though sotne of them are exceedingly indifferent as works of art, but their Adaptation to the drama is very much forced and oometlraeH decidedly Inappro priate. The tillo and the scenery ocm to be alter thought, for which, it may be, we are indebted to the genius of Mr. .John S. Clarke, who appears on the bill" n 'iie of the author of tho drama. Mr. Clarke we know very well to be an excellent actor, unpurposed, Indeod, In ills particular line, wboce success In London lias Ween tho cause of much congratulation with ills admirers here: but up to tho present time he has not figured as a play-writer, and we shrewdly bub- pect that, an his name only appears as part au thorofthe drama under consideration, for the pnrpone of obtaining an American copyright, he has contented himself with giving it a title. The want of connection bctweeu the title and the play, to a matter of comparatively, small 'niportanee, however, If the pieeo itself has merit. We regret, however, that we cannot speak of it in terms of absolute enthusiasm, n it is a not very Ingenious reliasU of pretty old material, that has done good duty on the boards 'In dorens of Manias before to-day. Mr. Henry Leslie is well known as tho writer c several .popular plays, and ho has done vastly better .work than this, which is not up to the low standard of excelleueo by which works of its class arc judged. The incidents turn upon the adventures or a girl, "Alice," who, being abandoned in her In fancy by her parents, is brought up by a thief and footpad named "lUlph Heron" as his own daughter. Grown to be a woman, she is noticed by a young lawyer named "Harold Forrester," who falls in love with her and who induces his father to employ her as a housekeeper. Here 'she is discovered by '-Ralph Heron," who en deavors to make her furnish him with money, and who on her refusing contrives that she shall be accused of a robbery of his o-n coin mi t ting. For this crime she is tried at the Old Bailey, and is acquitted through tho efforts of "Toby 'Mapletoft," a pill vender to whom "Har old" has dono a kludncss, which ho eu Jdeavors to repay by getting on the jury, with a determination to stand out against tho other eleven, if it should be necessary to save "Alice." After tho acquittal of "Alice," it is discovered that her parent- have endeavored to repay her for their abandondent by dylug and leaving her a large fortune, which In case she cannot be found is to iro to the person who has taken care of her. "Ralph Heron" attempts to get pos session of this money by secreting himself on board of a steamer on which she embarks for Australia, and throwing her overboard when he has an opportunity to do so unobserved. He then puts in a claim for tho fortune, and pro duces the proofs of his having cared for the girl in her infancy, and is apparently ou tho point of gaining his object, w hen "Alice," who has been rescued, steps in to accuse him of at tempting to murder her, and to sink into the 'arms of Uit lover as tho curtalu noes down. There Is a Jttlc matter of n forgery committed by "Job Forrester,' tho father of "Harold," and ome comic loudness thrown in to give the piece a. flavor; but for all that London; or, The Lights and Shadows of the Great Ciiy, cannot be pro flounced a very exhilarating piece. . The performance on Saturday evening was reasonably good lor a first night, tho leading parts being creditably represented by Mr. Walcot as "Harold Forrester," Mr. Morrison as "Ralph Heron," Mr. Fawcett as "Bob Austin," Mr. Brad ehaw as "Toby Mapletoft," Miss Graham as "Alice Heron," Miss Rose Wood as "Letty," and Mrs. Chapman as "Lady Euphemla." Mr. Morrison had the best opportunities, and he gave an excellent melodramatic representation of "Ralpk Heron." Mr. Fawcett also had a charac ter suited to him in the lawyer's office fag, ."Bob Austin," but more real humor was shown Joy Mr. Bradshaw In his personation of the irre concilable juryman, "Toby Mapletoft." It would be amiss not to mention also that Miss lary Barr, who has made a favorablo Impres sion during the past season or two in subordi nate parts, sang tho ballad "Somebody's Wait ing for Mo" very nicely indeed, and obtained a .deserved encore. The best scenery is that representing London 'Bridge in the prologue, Charing Cross Hotel and Railway Depot, and tho London Docks, with the departure of the steamer Melbourne in the se cond act. Tho views of Temple Bar and St. Paul's Church are tolorable, and that of Green wich Park abominable. Any of our Philadelphia scene painters, however, could have dono much better than the best of these performances of the London artist, which will scarcely be considered Jbytfhe; majority of tho spectators to be "nearly as good as a trip to London," as is suggested by the play bills. On Saturday night mucn amusement was caused by the appearance in one of the boxes of .tin elddrly' gentleman in a oorduroy coat and an antiquarian white hat of portentous height, whom w e Imagined to bo the original "Solon Shingle." Th (boys-tin. tbo gallery, however, discovered a resemblance to Horace ureeiey, ana caiioa lor a spoecn.' 11 The Individual in question, however. was not of an oratorical turn of mind, but he graciously bowed in recognition of the applause bestowed upon the piece. Itfind .Tnrera find lm aVjriiilntare. Editor of ths Evening Telegraph. Your many readers should have their atten tion called to a bill introduced in tln.i IIjih at Harilnburc by one of our city members, which is now pending, and mny pass unless sumo effort is inn dp to defeat it. I have not seen It, conse quently cannot give the exact wording. III, however, to tho effect that It shall he uulawfnl for road jurors to assess any pnrt of tho (I i:iiu,rc occasioned by the opening of nnw streets on owners of property. Ibis in itself would be outrageously unjiMt to the city, for which the member cannot give any excuse satisfactory to bin Immediate constituent or the people of our city at large. It is n well-known fact that pro perty Is often largely increased in valuo in consequence of tho opening of streets. There has been a number opened in our city entirely at the cost of pcrxoim owning pro perty that would lo benefited by it, and that at their own request. Ht reels are now usually opened or extended by parlies Interested peti tioning the city authorities. When the locality is visited by the proper committee, it It is thought advisable, they so report. When a nul jury is asked for, wbo'assess the damages which must be put on, the city or property owners benefited, or both, generally have a full share to pay, and property owners" seldom If ever any thing like tho amount of the lcnelit accruing to them. Tho bill further provides that all awards of road juries now pending, where any part of the damages lias been put on property owners that ore not yet confirmed by the court, shall be declared null and void, thus asking tho legisla tor to pass u)K)U a measure that he cannot know anything about. T.'ie following question by some member of tho House might probably give some Information. Tho questions are, Will the mover of this men mi re inform the House whether he knows anything about the opening of Antoinette street? Whether he was assessed, on the ground of being benefited, for any part of tho damages accruing from the opening of said street? And whether the passage of this act would relieve him from the payment of tho assessment If affirmative answers are made? It would bo legislation to meet privato interests. It is hardly possible that the Legislature would pass a bill so entirely unjust. The tituo allowed to all parties between the road jurors' award and tho Court's confirma tion of the same is ample to give all parties Inte rested time to make their grievances known to the Court. If just the jurors' award is set aside. J. I). Philadelphia, Jan. SI. 1870. aVorelfjn I If in. El Djevai, an Arab paper published at Con Msnlinoplc, has just been suspended tor two months on account of a recent artielo in which it stated that if a war had broken out between Turkey and Egypt, tho Arab subjects of the Forte would have risen in insurrection. The Russian papers nnnouuco nn important discovery by Cartson, a teamed Norwegian, which wilt give a great Impetus to Siberian trade. Ho had cruised for scientific purposes in an expedition undertaken last summer to the Kariun Sea, which washes the southern part of l ho Isle of Nova Zembla and the Government of Tobolsk, and is covered with eternal ice. In this ice a passage wns discovered which, for evoral months in the year, odors a convenient path for tralllo between Siberia uud tho Norwe gian harbor of Iromsoe. Tills discovery was made at the same time by the Englishman I'ullber. The Bombay Gazette, speaking of the pre sent working of tho lndo-Kuropcan Telegraph, complains that, whereas in other countries tele grams come in anticipation of tho mails, iu India tho mail anticipates the telegrams. On the same day that English extracts were pub lished In that paper to tho RUh of November, they received telegrams from London of tho 8lh and lUh of the same month (received when tho contents of the papers of later date were fami liar to them). On tho diiy following they re ceived a telegram of the 10th of November; and lurilier old telegrams since, which tney have piillished. not as news, but as curiosities of telegraphy, it tins state ot tilings is to con tinue, the Gazette says it would bo far better to have n j telegraph at ull. Would it not be possible to keep bi.ek tho news by the mulls until all tho missing telegrams drop iu ? The intercs. and excitement would be just tho sumo in tho long run. It is a most uncomfortable Idea that of mails anticipating telegrams. For aught we know, some ouo telegram may take years to come from the other cud of the world if it has become eutanglcd at the bottom of tho sea, aud ur great graudchildren may bo knocked tip in the middle of tho night by the arrival of the news of their grandfather's birth long after his decease. Submarine telegraphic communica tion is marvel of science, and very conveuleut if it Is properly worked, but we expect It to convey news rather than history, and tho wires will be of very little use if, Instead of Hashing their intelligence with a regularity we can de pend on, they take to playiug these electrical tricks. t'lTY ITKLUM.
