The alarm of flr last evening, about half-rtast fl o'clock, was canned by the Blight burning of Gallagher's stable, in Lindell street. John McLaughlin, a carpenter, fell from & building Twenty-second street, below Race, on Wednesday, and was much injured, one of his wrists being broken. A large meeting of the Knights of St. Crispin was held last evening at National Hall, for the purpose of giving an expression of opinion in relation to the present griev ances resulting from an attempt to reduce their wages. Yesterday morning, about 10 o'clock, William l'atton, while gunning in a skiff at the month of the Schuylkill, accidentally shot and killed his companion, William Seeds, otherwise known as the ''Jersey Boy." The eighty-fourth anniversary of the Philadelphia Society for Alleviating the Miseries of Publio Prisons was held last evening, when the following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President, James J. Barclay; Vice-Presidents, Joseph It. Chandler, William S. Terot; Treasurer, William Dnane; Secretaries, John J. Lytle, Edward Townsend; Counsellors, Henry J. Williams, Charles Gibbons. An adjourned meeting of the oil manu facturers andjdealers was held yesterday after noon, at No. 132 South Second street. A memorial was adopted, requesting the Legis lature not to pass the petroleum bill now be fore, and in lieu thereof to pass an act for bidding the manufacture of oil that will not stand a fire test of one hundred and ten degrees Fahrenheit. Yesterday afternoon, Coroner Taylor con tinued his investigation into the cause of the death of Dennis Corkrey. David Collins, Mary Comfort, Cecilia Lanmon and Joseph Bauer, Jr., testified, their evidence being cor roborative of that already published, as to tne trouble on the pavement, at Fifth street and Girard avenue, on Sunday night last. Bauer testified that he saw Quick after he stabbed Corkrey, and that he appeared to be drunk. Quick caught him, and said to a companion "I guess this is one that tackled us," but upon being spoken to in German, let go of Bauer. The newly-elected officers of the District Grand Lodge, No. 3, I. There are 27 lodges and 10:18 members in this district, with an aggregate amount of funds reaching $.)(, 4iS0. Applications were made lor char tering four new lodges. Last evening, in parlor C of the Conti nental Hotel, the third annual reunion of the Yale Alumni Association of Philadelphia and vicinity came off. There are upon the roll of this association one hundred and forty names, embracing many held in the highest respect and esteem by our citizens. The pleasures of the social gathering last evening were participated in by about fifty gentlemen, representing all the professions. The tables were spread beautifully and bountifully. The chair was occupied by Judge Strong, Presi dent of the society. The annual meeting of the contributors to the Union Temporary Home for Children was held yesterday afternoon. There are at present in the Home 63 children, whose ages range from 3 to 12 years. Uf these 20 are bovs and 43 are girls, all healthy and happy. There has been no sickness during the year just past, and the managers are enabled to congratulate themselves upon the thriving condition of the Home in every respect. They find the accommodations, however, somewhat limited, as their needs increase, and are now considering the propriety of erecting an addi tional building at the rear of the present one. D.mestlo Affaire. Gold closed yesterday at 121$. The franking abolition bill was passed in the House yesterday. Farmers in the vicinity of New Britain, Conn., have been ploughing this week. Governor Geary sent a message to the Legislature yesterday approving nineteen biUs. Mr. Dawes replied in the House yester day to General Butler's speech of the previous day. Two banks at Pittsburg were defrauded of large sums of money by means of forged cheeks. The offender escaped. President Grant says he has no intention of recommending to Congress an appropria tion for improving the capital. At no distant day President Grant ex pects to see the Cabinet Ministers provided with residences in Washington rent free. Prince Arthur yesterday visited the arsenal at Washington, dined with Secretary Fish, and in the evening attended a ball riven in his honor by Minister Thornton. The Senate resolution giving the contract ' for the printing of the proceedings of the State Legislature to George Bergner was de feated in the llouse yesterday. In the Georgia House of Representatives yesterday applications for the seats of mem bers declared ineligible were made by the can didates having the next highest vote, but the House refused to allow tne claim. Over thirty Indian lodges were surprised by the United States troops in Montana re cently, and men, women, and children killed, only six or eight men escaping. This was in retaliation for murders and outrages upon whites. The Commissioner of Agriculture inti mates that he has no seeds, plants, etc., for miscellaneous distribution, and that he can only forward them to regularly constituted agricultural societies ana oiuds, ana corres pondents of the department. Mr. Corbin made his anpearanoe before the Banking and Currency Committee yester day, and very unwillingly gave evidence relative to the gold gambling of September last, exculpating the President, but not by any means improving his own reputation. Once more the Old Dominion is repre sented in the nails of Congress. Yesterday, Senator Lewis, and Representatives Piatt, Ridgway, and Milnes were sworn in. An ob jection was made to the swearing in of Mr. Torter, on the ground of his dislovaltv. Eventually he was adniittod by a large ma jority. FrelD Affair.. There was no ground for the report of the Pope's death. The commercial treaty between Franoo and England was the subject of an excited debate in the Corps Legislatif yesterday.
