Fell aideep on the 2tith of December, WILLIAM HENRY LARNFD, Jr. Althongh onr hearts are laoe rated and blooding, owing to this sad dispensation, yet we humbly bow to a Supreme Power, well knowing Ha doeth all things well. For some wise purpose, incompre hensible to ns now, our lovod one una been transplanted to bloom eternally in heaven. His memory will ever hover around us like tho swret porfuino of a lovely flower. Our dear friend was a rare combination of true manliness and feuiinino gentleness. Nature hai endowed him with wonderful gifts. Preutlco, of the Louisville Courier-Journal, died lids morn ing at i) o'clock. HUrtch of iMr. Prcnlloiv Tho veteran journalist whone death Is just reported by telegraph was born in Preston, Con necticut, on December 3, ISO:.!, and was conse quently sixty-six years old. lie was graduated at BrDtfn University at the age of nineteen, and became principal of n high school in Hartford. Ho afterwards edited the Hartford Iieview, and became a pcrsoual enemy of Mr. Gidoon W'elle, who at the time was a rival editor in the same town. Iu 1&0, however, ho established the Journal in Louisville, and remained chief proprietor and editor of it nntll a few mouths ago, when, by a struugo con catenation of circumstance, ho lost his partner ship. The paper since then has been consoli dated with its oldest rival, aud he was employed upon it as an assistant editor. The last ton years of his lifo were full of trouble to tho old man. During the war, notwlthuaudlug his Unionism, both his sous went to tho Rebol army. The elder was killed in battle. Tho younger, in a personal affray in Virginia, killed a comrade, and was tried by military commission for murder. The old man obtained loavo from Prcsldeut Liueoiu and from Jeff, Davis to paas through the hostile lines, nnd re mained at his son s hide In the Kobe! ctuip during the trial, which resulted, partly through hLs efforts, in acquittal. nis wife, who was a musical composer of con siderable uotc and a leader of the ton iu his city, died only about a year and a half ago. Appa rently, the flowery paths through which he wandered to poesy became thorny and rugged at the end. Ho taught in sorrow what he learned . in song. He had still the old fire, and his genius had yet been domi nant in Kentucky politico, but, forced by circumstances to adopt a creed in which he ha I no faith, be did not work with his old spirit. H t let younger heads and stronger wills usurp his accustomed place. His Journal was hU Idol, but it was taken from the temple where he wor skipped, and ho and his idol were none the bet ter for the separation. C JlFl2 K . llunnr. WAsniNoroN, Jan.
