Boston, Jan. 1, 1870. Great is Boston great iH the "Hub!"' Great are the men great wo the women; great in verjtliing that belongs to cither. Qniclc, close, and calculating are all you moot. Men mumble additions and division while they pass yon on the street. If you ask one of them a question, he appears to consider well the profits likely to arise from the brief ac quaintanceship before he answers. If the in dications for trade or profit are good, he answers you, perhaps, fully and satisfactorily, or by asking you a question in return; if the indications are poor, your answer is equally so, and the brief "yes" or "no" is given as though the breath expended in giving expres sion to the sound was worth so much in ready cash. The women, too, are full of business of one kind or another, and as you ride in the street cars they do their figuring, using their cabas for the dosk. Few of them are handsome, but they are smart, or at least I am . to informed, and they certainly have no hesitation about asserting their "rights'' whonever occasion requires or op portunity offers. And they have such odd fashions, too. Boston always did claim originality of a superlative order, and just now no one would certainly dare to question the claim in fashions at least. With the weather mild and pleasant, you moet the ladies done up with enormous "comforters" or scarfs, or red or white worsted, stretched over the head and ears, and then wound twice or thrice about the neck, while the most un graceful and unsightly tassels hang stream ing down the back. The fact that it is January gives us to understand that it sLauld be cold, and the Boston ladies insist on im pressing us with the idea that it it cold, although the thermometer is far above the freezing point. And their hair! Why, most of them appear to have eschewed the "switch" and "braid" entirely, and do up their tresses EomcwLat after the style of their grand mothers. Combs of magnificent proportions, and growing larger each day, are coming into play, and after one has been accustomed to seeing the hanging massos which cling to the heads of our Philadelphia belles, the combs look odd enough. But that's Boston, and they wouldn't be without these little idiosyn cracics no, not for the world. It's a species of "smartness," and gives independence to J the looks of things, if nothing more. But I must do them the justice to say that they are industrious and frugal. Go where you will among the dwelling-houses of the city, and at every window will bo seen the hand engaged in the everlasting stitch, stitch, stitch. The "Hub," if juBtly celebrated for one thing more than another, that one thing is its miserable, ill-shaped, and decidedly crooked streets. The new portions of the city are well, nay, beautifully laid out, and strong efforts have been made to straighten some of the crooked avenues of the older part of the city; but, oh misery ! the stranger who undertakes to find his way about, alone and unaided, must needs be supplied with ample quantities of that most excellent com modity called patience, mixed with no small portion of perseverance. But they gp ahead with the straightening process, however, and if tho world stands long enough I haven't the ftlightest doubt but that the streets of Boston will some day assume respectable proportions, and be as near straight as the peculiar char acteristics of the people will permit. When this day does come, believe me that there will be people here who will mourn over tho passing away of tho "mazy labyrinths" with the same grief that they would part with the cradle of liberty. Why, I verily believe that a majority of the people are proud of their crooked streets simply because they are crooked, and therefore can be claimed as sorðing original. Speaking of the "cradle of liberty" reminds me of the fact that Faneuil Hall is no longer Faneuil Hull, but "Fun'l Hall." That's purely original, with out doubt. Boston, up to this time, has had but three or four days of sleighing, which is an item worth noticing, and one which can seldom be mentioned so late in the season. Of course Brighton is neglected, and borseflebh is spared accordingly. The same rain storms that have visited the South and West have also been here, and the roads used for showing off Jhe metal of the stock are perfect muck. Yesterday we took a stroll vp south on the Neck, and around tho regions heretofore called the Back Bay. These localities are most beautifully laid out, and some of the finest buildings in the country are in oourse of erection or receiving the finishing touches. As wo havo always been led to believe that the Bunker Hill Monument marked the spot upon which the battle of that name had been fought, I was considerably aHtonihhed, not to say pained, on learning from those who are native and to the manor born, and who ought to know all about it, that the battle wasn't fought on this bill at all, but was fought on an adjoining eminence, about a quarter of a mile distant. This piece of information speaks bad for the "Hub," for I have a dis tinct recollection that the histories and goo graphics which are used in Philadelphia pub lie schools, and which emanated from New Ecgland sources, did tell us most clearly, when mentioning the monument, that the battle was fought on this ground. Of course those who visit the spot, and read the inscrip tions on the monument, will learn that the shaft marks Hie spot where Warren fell, but that don't alter the case in tho slightest, for every schoolboy believes, and would no doubt be willing to be qualified, that the monument marked the identical spot upon which our forefathers "fought" the great "fit" which culminated in the Declaration of Indepen dence, and eventually made the great American nation. In this connection if may rrt impropor for mo to stat that tlie nios anient, as well as tie grounds upon which it stands, was originally the property of Ht. John's Lodge of Masons, of which lodge General Warren is said to have been Master at the time of his death. This lodge took the initiatory steps towards erecting the monument, but the great anti Masonio movement, which agitated the coun try some thirty years ago, burned so furiously in this section of the country at the time, that the Masons gave up the project as a body, and succeeded in their most commen dable determination by handing tho whole afl'uir into the hands of the Bunker Hill Monument Association, under whose superin tend the shaft was reared. I mention this fact because it is not generally known, and mnke a correction in the histories and geogra phies aforesaid. i December, never a very busy month with the wholesale men, is said to have been duller than has been known for many years. New York howls over tho "apathy," and Bos ton echoes it. "Everything is too fluctuat ing," says the jobber. "Freights are light and travellers few," says the railroad agent. "Business was never duller for the season,' says the retail man, and then all join in the common cry of "uncertainty!" "We never expect to do much business dur ing this month," quoth the importer, "but it is time we were receiving our spring goods. But the future is a blank, there is nothing but uncertainty in it. Our customers will not buy of us because they are looking for gold to docline still further. We cannot buy because we have no idea whether gold ia going up or down. If wo bought now and it went up, we should make oceans of money; if it went down, we should loso in the same proportion. And it is just as likely to go one way as the other, since we know nothing as to the future plans of Mr. Boutwell. He is master of the market, and can run it up or down at pleasure. He leaves us no chance to exercise our own judgment. He has refused 22 and may do it again, or he may throw a couple of millions upon tho market and run it down to 10 or 15. Which he will do we know not, and hence wo stand inactive and powerless. Give us a cer tainty, whether the higher or lower we care not, but give us a certainty, that we mny pur sue our business with some degree of dence!" Such is tho cry in BoKton ai 1 York. Mr. Boutwell was here in person day before yesterday, and gave us a lecture on things generally, but did not touch on finances. Boston had expected that gentle man to tell her people all about his financial plans, but since he didn't do it the "Hub" is correspondingly angry. Mr. Boutwell will no doubt be able to survive it.
