The romantic history conucctad With a Mvfltertoaa Coal Heaver 1 has furnished tlio most recent sensation in Je rscy City, which we affect to call a "suburb" f New York, and which consequently f urnishes as with notafcwNew Yorklsms. The mysterious cool-ehoveUcr's name is Charles Kabzlosky. 1.8 his name imports, bo is a l'olo by birth, and perhaps that fact alone is sufficient to account lor his not performing in opera Russe during its recent season at the French Theatre here. No; the medium through which he gained his living was nearer akin to the rcgintcr of a furnace than to the register of n volco, and from morning to nilit he might be Been in the streets of Jersey City, shovelling in cotil. Perhaps his ad itlon to this caloric profession was due to his having formerly stood fire so well, for his rank was that of a colonel, and he had served with distinction in the army. In tho Tosen insurrec tion of 1852 3 he was aide-de-camp to his uncle, who commanded a brigade. His father and uncle were captnrcd and sent to Siberia; he and his sister escaped to Prussia, whers they fonnd friends, and whence he wandered to this coun try. I'pon his arrival ha sought for employment In vain, and though he was acquulntcd with five languages, he was obliged to take to coal-heaving (by which he realized the fabulous snm cf twenty-five cents a any) to savo himself from starvation. He drifted from one depth Of desti tution to another, and finally was admitted to the lodgers' department at police nenoiuiinet, Jersey City. There he remained natll Inst Satur day mortiing,'whcn he was offered a situation as a teacher of languages by a gentleman for whom he had done some chores, and who hud keen struck by the dignity of his demeanor. New I'ontaffc Hlampn. It Is not generally known that nearly all the ' postage stamps made for the country are manu factured in New York, in the upper stories of Cooper Union, by the National Bank Note Com pany. More than four hundred millions were last year sent thence, and very few were stolen in process of manufacture. In answer to the complaint of tho public In general with regard to the quality of the stick ing-gum used in tho Iat issue of stamps, the company begs leave to explain that the trouble arises from the super salivary use ' made of them by that public. The , gum is just as adhesive as that formerly in use, but is of so light a color that people suspect none is on, and moisten It too much. That's what's the matter. The designs of some new postage-stamps having been decided upon, the company will very shortly prepare the plates from which they are to be printed. The smaller denominations will pro bably be ready by the first of February. Changes have been made in some of the busts of public characters. Hamilton, for instance, is presented without his pigtail, which has been for so many years his honored appendage on postage stamps; and Jackson is left out in tho cold, so to speak, for he is denuded of that historical coat which lias swathed his figure for a time beyond the memory of the oldest post-otiice Yet. Those who have seen tho new designs pronounce them superior to the present postal frauds, both the color and execution of which are so offensive. Indiana. Indulgence. From evidence which was elicited on Satur- " day before Judge Iugraham, of the Supremo Court, it seems that Mrs. Eliza Gowun, the plaintiff, has been indulging in that Indiana pastime known as divorce, during the absence of her husband in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Mr. John Cowan, the defendant, Is engaged there in the management of an exteuslve iron business. During his residence at Pittsburg, his wife, since July last, has been liviug at her father's house in this city. Last evening Mr. Gowan received a telegram from a friend (also a resident of New York), to the effect that the knowledge had just tome to him that Mrs. Gowan had furtively ob tained a divort'e that allowed her one hundred dollars a mouth alimony, and granted necurity on Mr. Cowan's real estate here, to the amount of nearly six hundred dollars. Mr. Gowaa as severates that ho never received auy other in timation of the divorce, either by publication or otherwise; that bis wife's "father, Mr. .T. C. Dally, Is the real instigator and procurer of the divorce; that, tho evidence taken before the 'referee was perjury; and that the allega tions of adultery against him so evidenced are demonstrated to be untruthful by the fact that he can prove himself to have been elsewhere at . hour specified us tho one iu which suppositious adultery was consummated. In tho face of these facts Judge Ingraham ha granted au order ailing on the plaintiff and all the parties to nhow cause why the proceedings and the decree of divorce should not be annulled. i m. . . The Kt HelI,, -jal This long-promised aff air is to come oil this evening. It was at first intended to make it a fancy-dress ball, but tho limited number of ficti tious or historical characters who could with any propriety be ponderously represented pre ' vented the realization of that idea. After Henry the Eighth, Daniel Lambert, Falstaff, and the Car diff Giant had been represented, there certainly aeomcd room for very little further choice. I propose to go there this evening, aud to prepare yoa an account written on the spot, with the terpsichorca'n flesh-pots gyrating round me In a state of perspiring pinguldity, and hope my Impressions may gratify the Pantagruellan appe tite of your many readers.
