J'nmt fte Philadelphia Press, S'ov. 22, 18ti9. "Not even publishers will deny that Harper's Maoazine, the Fortieth Volume of which is begun with the December Number, is tbe best monthly periodical, not in this country alone, but In tho English language. A combination of circumstances have made it so. The proprietors have liberality as well as capital ; its conductors are experienced as well as capable; Its illustrations are numerous and good. The impersonality of its editorship is a great advantage. The new number opens with a new "Life of Frederick the Great," profusely illustrated, which will run through the Magazine for about a year. This, evidently from a practiced hand, will be very acceptable. In the opening of the biography of Frederick there are ten engravings; there are seventeen in "Beast, Bit d, and Fish;" eighteen In "Tho University Rowing Match" (a lively ami de tailed account); two in Miss Mulock'a serial, "A Brave Lady," and six in tho "Scientific Record.' There are three capital novelettes; but the best thing in all the magazines, this month, is the opening essay in the 'Editor's Easy chair," in which, with a racy persiflage which is gravely comic and Irresistibly amusing, Mr. Jenkins' recent descriptions of Father Hyacinthe in New lork are accurately disseeted, Thackeray, who was savage as well aa cynical in his satiro, perpetually breaking buttermes on tuo wheel, never wrote any "chamng" as good as tins is. it i)i jci, iwiii:b ruts iay.
