THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, MONDAY, OOTOlHsit 18. 18C9. HnW.rORKI8M8, I Fram Our Own Corretpondtnt. New York, Oct. 18, 1369. MfttrlnftM in New York. On the surface It socms ,as though thcro had lu tlng the last nix months boon a Rood many marriages In high lire In Mew York, but this la not In reality the case. The Increasing publicity which some of the papera have given to them has bestowed upon them a factitious importance. By far the greater propor tion of marriages, making allowance for the com parative size of the various classes of society, has oc curred among the lower and middle grades. Among the lower clnsses here, more especially, marriage is on the increase. The reason Is that they are com posed so largely of emigrants, and emigrants are much more given to marrying than the native torn American Is. In the year 1800, for Instance, more than half the pcoplo married In this city were of foreign birth. In ISflT a much larger proportion were foreigners, and in I8t9 the minority of those born in this country was still more remarkable. But the marriage ratio or Gotham, taking the classes as they come, la smaller than that of any other city In the United States. In Boston tho marriage-ratio Is that ef fifteen In one thousand ; In yrfur city, that of fourteen In one thousand ; in this city, that of less than twelve in one thousand ; yet both in BoHtnn and Philadelphia the foreign population is extremely limited. It may, Indeed, be safe to say that for each marriage la New York two or three occur In Bos ton and In Philadelphia. We have perhaps plonty Of the raw material for good husbands, for we have plenty of rakes only the rakes are not reformed. Perhaps, too, the invasion of so maay foreign counts and marqnlsea as have within the past few years made Fifth avenue tho scene of their spolia tions, has had something to do with frightening oir millionaire pnpas. Whether or not the Lord Hubert ' Alnsley who so recently married the Staten Island belle was all that he assumed to be, his career in Gotham pointed a sad moral to many a rich and re pentant papa who had fallen a victim to his own anxiety to call a nobleman his son-in-law. Like poor Tom Moore, the parmive of Murray Hill "dearly love a lord," and one reason the Lady of Lyons remains popular Is because of Us satire upon the servile worship of titles. In connection with this subject the correlative one of divorce is not without Interest. In 1808 more than five hundred divorces 'were granted In the city and county of New York, and the great cause was, not infidelity, but Incom patibility of temper. That covers a good deal, you know, and, unhappily, William and Mary, or Alphonso and Imogen, do not always find out the nasty little unsuspected hiding-places of one another's temper In a year or two. A happily mar ried woman (or at least an apparently happily mar ried one) told me the other day, that after twenty years of study of tho character of her husband, she must confess to still being ignorant on many points. Well ! I suppose the study of one's husband's or one's wife's cliir iicter must be like the study of Shake speare oi i " ble one Is always discovering new bcautii , ... At any rate it would be charitable to suppose .so. On the other hand, I have heard It said that the reciprocal study of connubial character is like trying to follow Sir Joshua Reynolds' direction to contemplate a stone wall until you can discover beauty in It ; there ia no use trying, nnd you soon turn away In despair. I am afraid that Is the principle upon which too many New Yorkers, who have entered the marriage state, pro . ceed. The number of divorces makes things look that way. But, after all, perhaps the happiest wedded lives are thoso In which the first years have been marred by misunderstandings which revealed mutual strengths as well as weak nesses. We are told that the dwellers by the Bed Sea used to procure pearls from their oysters by first wounding the bivalves aud then casting them back into the water. Perhaps it is so with human hearts, particularly those that have been ashed for In tho sea or marriage. It is only after being wounded that they are good for much. n. r. wiiiin' ;bot. Seeing is believing, and to have "heern tell" is next door to considering whether perhaps the thing might not be so. The New York correspondent of a Western newspaper, which Is equally devoted to fe male suffrage and spiritualism, has I sco raked up a rumor that the spirit of the late N. P. Willis Is in the habit of visiting a certain house (number not given) In Forty-fourth street, of this city. Accord ing to this account he cnts around loose, writes his spiritual autograph with an attenuated pcn-liolder, presents his-nost ss with an airy volume gf poems printed (in gold and blue, I fancy) somewhere In in finite space, and adorns her vase with a supernatural bouquet culled from a heavenly hot-house. The cor respondent vouches for the truth of the phenomena, for she (It must be a Bhe) has seen the place where they occurred, and beheld the skeletonized remains of the bouquets. In the name or Gammon! vhen will all these rumors be accom panied with names, localities, dates, and circumstantial details ? In future I intend treat ing all of them in the same way In which the "best" boarding-house keepers treat applicants for board, and to inHist npon the best of references. Rumors, which I disdain to make nse of, every now and then float to my ears respecting spiritual phenomena; children haunted with a mysterious Voice with which they converse in unintelligible language ; ladles of irreproachable character and great literary attain ments, who see visions and receive communications from floating aureolas. All rlgtit! Trot 'era out! That la all I ask for. Let there be a Grand Spiritual Teat Mediums' Congress, with Parker Pillsbnry ror President and Charles Foster as Roper-ln-ln-Chiof. This is what things must come to, if the phenomena which the spiritualists pretend to accomplish In secret are ever to be brought to the world's light. "Free" Concerts at the Tammany. The English actor Elllaton, in one of his impudent, bombastic speeches, once informed his Surrey au dience that those among them who were dissatisfied with the performance might apply to the box ofllco and would be furnished with tickets, which any evening during tho ensuing week would admit them free upon surrender of one Bhtlling! The Tam many evidently proceeds.on occasion, upon a similar principle. Last night a sacred concei t was given there, in which Madame Frederlcl, Mr. Himmer, and Wilhelm Formea took part. Admlssioja was thirty-five cents; but (so the advertisement said) the tea) veieftee. AM Baba. citV iti:mm. Tug Cheat ViTALiZEn. This title may bo fairly given to a restorative which bas takon precodunco of all ot'ier tonie and alterative preparations foraprrini of nearly twonty yoars. During tliat long interval UoSTKTTEU'S Stomach Bitters may be truly said to have enjoyed un rivalled popularity. Many preparations have boon got up to compete with it, but tboy have all fallen into its wake or sunk into oblivion for lack of patronage. From the first this now world-renowned Vegetablo Tonio has been both medicinally and financially suooossful. Every year haa added to the number of its friends, and tho dimand for it, based solely upon the experimental proofs of its excellence as a preventive and curative, seems to have no aasignablo limit. The medical profession sanction and approve its uso, and it is now at the bend of the class of medicines to which it belongs, the admitted, undisputed Soveheion Tomo OF TUB Age. Tho statistics of the Unite 1 States Revenue if opart men t will verify the statement that it stands alone and unapproached in the magnitudo of its sales as compared with those of any other proprietary remedy advertised on this sido of tho Atlantic. The explanation of this fact may be comprised in a fow words. Hostetter's Stomach Bittebs is at once the purest, the safest, and the most notont of all vegetable tonics, and the beat antidote to evory variety of malarious disease. Hence it is especially adapted to the present season of ohilling dews snd nnwuoloHomo vapors. The Sale or the Season:! A Labor Lot ov FALL OVKROOATS, Together with .
