THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, MONDAY, AUGUST 23. 1803. n u w-y oiini s zvi s. From Our Own CorratpondenK New York, August 23, ISO'J. Late on Saturday night reporters, wringing the perspiration out of their pocket-handkerchief, were running breathlessly around offering to the Various Sunday newspapers special accounts of the whereabouts and intentions of one Lawrence Graham, principal witness against William Varley, better known as "Itcilrfy the Rlnrknmlth." It had been feared that this gentleman was cither spirited away from his home In Hudson City, In consequence of Reilily's arrival here from San Francisco in charge of detectives, or that he had succumbed to a bribe of ifritxX) and voluntarily vamosed. These rumors the reporters above referred to contradict at the expenditure of perspiration and at the moderate charge of five dollars for the information. The trial of this celebrated bail-forfeiter Is to take place to-day week, when It is to be presumed justice will be administered without fear of or favor to the gathering of roughs that will surely be in at tendance. A New Medium has come out, of whom I may say more, if the private seance, which I contemplate negotiat ing for, is satisfactory. My expectations are moderate. All I stipulate for Is, to have hot coals laid on my head without burning me, and to be wafted through space near the ceiling without scraping the whitening olT. This Is all Iask. If these trilling demands are complied with I shall prepare a circumstantial account of it for Tub Evening Tei.eobaph. The name of this medium is De Witt C. Hough. He is seventeen years old, comes from Hartford, Conn., an J gives seances in connection with Mr. Harry Bastian. They are said to be much more won derful than the Davenport brothers, and the remarkableuess of the rope-tying feats was in creased by cotton baudages being sewed to their shirt-sleeves. A few cynics, however, affect to despise this peculiarity of the exhibi tion, and describe it as very sew-sew. The Mercury characteristically describes the media as "a pug-nosed Eighth ward lad, and a cadaverous youth whose portrait would make an excellent frontispiece for a tombstone, chaperoned by an antique virgin of augulur de velopments." Thiuk of that for a llrst-class description ! Tlic Tlirnlrett are beginning to pick up in attractions. At Niblo's, the east in Formosa will include Miss Kate Newton, Miss Ada Harland, and Mr. H(.k'n V inklii Tlu nlot. 1 urns unnn thn will's knd the "wietims" of a first-class cyprian of the lyle of "Aronyma and ''Skittles, who is alter nately worthless and repentant. Her name is Formosa, and the brilliant wretchedness ot her jcarecr is contrasted with the violet-like purity of 'VnlK' " whrt l 11 rnlnasml convict's daughter. and who ultimately marries the hero. "Major Jorum" and "Compton Kerr, the gentlemanly villains of the piece, have poetic justice done them, the only sort of justice villains are sure of meeting with now-a-days. Do not let us decry too much the footlight fashion of punishing dramatic wickedness. It illustrates that the tendency of human nature is to approve of vir tue and to disapprove of vice. The one touch of nature which make all the galleries kin, is when the gentlemanly ruflian of the sensation drama is brought to bay Botany Hay or sent off to prison amid tumultuous applause. The agents of i'urlotla l'lilll nrc skilfully laying pipe preparatory to her arri val in this country. That event will probably take place on September 11. As a concert singer of the very first rank she is Madame Parepa's only rival; and since her lameness will forever prevent her appearing to advantage in opera, it is to be hoped that even that adipose artist will not grudge'her success. Miss Nettie Sterling, who between two and three years -ago sang in Philadelphia at the Coker concerts and was so greatly admired, is expected to shortly arrive iu this city from Italy, where she has been study ing. When she arrives a testimonial concert will be arranged both as a compliment and a benefit to her. The Citizen and Hound Table of last week re marks that "The lllonili'H, after receiving a great deal of abuse in Philadel phia, and, as a matter of course, attracting a great deal of attention, have gone to Buffalo. The Philadelphians are virtuously indlguaut at the attenuated dresses of the ladies, and iiercely angry because the finest pair of legs did not accompany the troupe." I was under the Im pression, by-the-hy, that the blondes had not yet made their appearance before the Quakers. If so, is not this criticism of the Citizen's some what premature? 1'crnoiinl. Miss Lisa Weber is in town, with that saucy flow of the "over-soul" in her eyes, the best of which Is that it is so ''delightfully wicked." Mr. Flageolet, one of the four grotesque dancers who constituted the celebrated "Clo doche" troupe, has just died at Bellevue Hos pital, another 6ad illustration of the improvi dence of people in his profession. Although he received the excellent salary of vlOOper week, he was without a penny; and had it not been for Messrs. Jarrett it Palmer, who contributed $75 towards his interment at Cypress Hill, he would have been Interred in the Potter's Field. What he did with his money it Is not for nie to say. Perhaps he bestowed it upon the poor. I hope so. Am Bam. IWISli Af, AII IMSAM.VriC. At the Walnut this evening Mr. and Mrs. Harry Watkins will commence an engagement, and will appear as "Fergus McCarthy" and ' "Blanche Desmond" in the Jri.-h drama of Cmter Two Flags. These artists won greatly on the regards of the public during their brief engage ment last season, aud they will doubtless attract appreciative audiences during the present week. The Tmeatkk Co.Micjris has been leased for a term of years by Messrs. Duprcz. Si Benedict, who will reopen it earlyiu October as a minstrel hull. The troupe under the management of these gentlemen achieved a decided success at the Arch Street Theatre during the two weeks they performed there, aud as the public appear to appreciate their efforts, thej' determined to locate in this city permanently. The Fahepa-Koha English opera troupe wll commence the season at the French Theatre In New York on September 11, and will appear at the Academy of Music in this city during the first week In October. The opening opera iu both places will be Balfe's Puritan's Daughter. In addition to this the repertoire of the trotmo will Include, besides a number of favorite works with which the public Is familiar, the following, which will be novelties to the majority of opera-goers: Oberon; Marriage o f Figaro; and the Black Domino. It is promised that these works shall be brought out in llrst-class style, with new costumes, properties, scenery, etc. Madame Rosa has gathered around her the fol lowing artists, who ought to form a strong com bination: Miss Kosa ilerseo, Mrs. Segulu, Miss Andrews, Miss Stockton; Messrs. Castle, Law rence, Campbell, Hall, Nordblom, Scguin, Taker, Kittes, Howard, and others. as the proprietors and directors of the concern. Mr. I). De Vivo will be the business manager. This gentleman escorted Madame Rosa on her highly successful tour through California and ocross the plains last season, and his well-known ability is n guarantee that the business affairs of the troupe will be efficiently managed. Mr. John Collins, the popular Irish come dian, will commence a tour through the West and Southwest, commencing at Ben De Bar's Theatre, St. Louis, on August 'M. "No man," saya Sir Astley Oocper, "ought to know by his sensations that ho has stomach." In other words, when digestion is porfoct there is neithor pain nor uneasiness in the region where it takes place. Nausea, want of appetite, tlatulency, oppression ufter rating, shooting pains in the epigastrium, a Hushing or' tho face at meal times, and a furred tongue is the morning, re among the direct symptoms of Indigestion Constitution, bil.ousnrss, neadaohe, norvous irritability physical weakness, ana low spirits are its almrst invaria ble accompaniments. All these indications of D-'p p,ia, whother immediate or secondary, are usually aggravated by hot weather. The close of summer is, therefore, the soason when the victim of dyspepsia most urgently needs a tonic and regu lating medicine. Ot course, every invalid has many ad visers. One friind recommends one drug, another an other; but in a multitude of counsellors there is not at ways safety. The standard remedy of the present age for indigestion, in all its stages, is Hostetter's Stomach Hitters. Time, that proves all things, has established its reputation on an impregnable foun latmn the sponta neons testimony of millions of intelligent witnesses. No acrid oil or ucid dotiles its stimulating principle; its tonic, constituents are the finest that botanical research has yet discovered ; it combuios the properties of a gentle evaouant, a blood depu rent, and an anti-bilious medicine, with invigo rating qualities of the highest order, an J is admitted both by the publio and the proiesaion to be the surest protec tion against all diseasea that are produced r propagated by pestiferous air or unwnolosomo water, that has ever been used either in the United States or Tropical America, In cases of constipation resulting from a want of muscu lar tone in the intestines, the effect of the ttn i'F.iis is per fectly marvellous; and without the dangerous sequences of mercury, it restores the disordered liver to a normal condition.
