Ttn grand concert Ibis evening, at the Maryland Institute, by the united societies, was a magnificent affair. The entertainment possessed a degree of grandeur and magnitude hut seldom met with, and was in the highest degree credita ble, and served to give a reminder of the grand fesln in Germany, participated in by conntless thousands of trained singers. The arrangement for the location of the singers was most admirable, the massive plat form being filled with substantial and neatly ! constructed rows of benches, elevated one above the other, so that the members stand ing thereon could all see tho baton of the leader, and act in concert with his well-directed movements and signals. Professor Lenschow, the leader of tho pre , sent Stongerfest, has already occupied an ex alted reputation as a musician of eminence and distinction, but the manner in which he has discharged his duties on the present occa sion has served to make for him a permanent . Germanic-American reputation of tho most ' enviable character, aud which is, in truth, well deserved, from the faithful nnd'nurcinit ting attention he has given to his duties. The concert opened with the grand overture "Robespierre,"byLitlolf, by the full orchestra. This and the "Fest Overture, ' by Hohnstock, in the second part of the programme, were finely rendered. The united societies sang in grand style tho noble chorus "Sonnenauf gang,"' by Hammer. The next selection given by the united societies was an acknowledg ment to the Creator, a fine composition in E flat, by Herman Mohr. This was followed by Abt's "Song of Vic tory." In addition to the united efforts of the societies, various delegations sang some less pretentious compositions with excellent etl'ect, The New York singers gave "Das Kirchleiu," by Becker, and the Philadelphiaus sang "Zum "Valde." The Laltimofeaus distinguished themselves by the manner in which they ren dered the prize composition of Herman Franke. This programme will be repeated at the picnic to-morrow afternoon at the Schuetzeu Park. The award of prizes will bo made to morrow, and the decision of tho judges is looked forward to with much interest. NEWS SUOZOTAnY. City Affairs.
